Thats such a powerful scene of the young man walking away with the surf board at the end... Hopefully that was the beginning of a new generation of surfers in the area, in a country that is frought with troubles.
We have troubles, some of our own making, some created through our support of non-local powers that want influence in the region, but we persevere. That being said.....the man at 4:30-4:44 is explaining that he used to surf using planks taken off from boats that were no longer seaworthy. Surfing developed organically in Pakistan like it did in Hawaii, but never gained traction. Look up "surfing in pakistan" by a youtuber named Malang. The upload is from 2019. She describes the surfing scene at one particular location near Karachi, but mentions about 4 others along the coast and explains that villagers at the coast had been surfing planks from boats for generations, but never had the chance to surf proper boards until 2014, when a local doctor donated 3 from abroad. 26 people used to share 3 boards until other donations brought the level up to about 30 boards. I found it as my 13yo daughter, who is a surfer and a Pakistani, asked me today, 5 days before our trip to El Salvador to surf, if there was surfing in Pakistan. Now that she knows that Skiing, Surfing, Ice Skating, Skateboarding, all exist in Pakistan, she isnt so resistant to visiting for an entire summer. Anyway, Its a good video, if you message Malang directly, maybe she can post one with a translation.
Our main goal is not to disorganize the local pricing with enormous unbargained offers. We dont want fishermen to stop fishing and wait for the next tourist to make him pay a stupid amount of money. Money is relative
Now you could say so but back in 2001 (before Sept11), Pakistan was becoming more tourist friendly in a way and could have become some kind of surf destination for middle east surfers. You never know who will come next and when. Please believe me, this is more a question of principle than money.
@@yepanty just saw these comments... i see your point, but the scale is just tipped so much already in the favor of western nations, is it really our call to decide how other economies function?
@@yepanty @Antony YEP Colas sounds like bs to me. What I saw was a man re-enforcing his perceived position of superiority over the local by denying him a fair price to use his boat. Considering how dangerous it was, to the point where you had a close call and had to turn back, and that they had warned you prior to taking you out in their boat how dangerous it was. All you've done is use your wealth and power to exploit them. Giving a board away doesn't change that. Don't want to disorganise the local pricing? So fisherman are suddenly going to stop fishing because one random white man has paid a rare price to hire a boat. Do me a favour. Your arrogance is astounding. Why is that a problem for you if it did change the pricing anyway? I suggest you have a look at the surfing hotspots in the UK and see how much it costs to hire out equipment. Look it all up, all of it, and then ask yourself why it's ok for people in places like Newquay to charge what they do, and why the man in Pakistan cannot charge what he intended to charge you. No bargaining over prices in Newquay btw... Tell me, what's the difference between the people hiring out their equipment in Newquay and the people hiring out their equipment in Pakistan? I think we both know the answer to that...
WHOA! that was epic, even though they did not score, that was a tale of some hungry surfers looking to score. That was a special look into some culture that I would never witness if it was not for the internet. thanks dudes
This was such a joy to watch, totally pulled me in and I wasn't even disappointed by lack of wave quality, just happy you guys did it for me. Rough stuff, true adventure and serious potential. 2020 Surfing is missing this kind of classic narration surf flick.
wow this was amazing to see! specially the end part where you gifted the local kid your board. You guys should visit again, Pakistan is much safer now after some turbulent years, and you will fond loads of 5 star resorts in Karachi and theres one even in Gwadar! hope to see a part 2 of this in the near future. Cheers
Great video guys thank u and well done giving the local groms the board....that's mandatory for all those who do not know about our surf culture wherever we travel to surf and there are groms aka young kids we leave them with our equipment to share with and keep peace for future surf relationships for all if only everyone was able to experience the magic that one feels being a surfer the world would be a very different place....only a surfer knows the feeling...thank u from santa cruz nor cal
Although you didn't find perfection you found a great adventure and made a film that in its imperfection made great watching. Been on a few duff missions myself. Totally enjoyed the characters who accompanied you on the journey too.
Pakistan is amazing country, I never believe the reality of how different and unique this country is until i met my pakistani friend and they answer all my question about my curiosity of Pakistan. Ill try bring my board and surf at pakistan someday.
Not sure what our guides say ? Check Haroon Waheed Pirzada from Transpakistan). I haven't heard of travelling surfers, only expats in Karachi.. A british guy started a surfschool in Mubarak, not far from Karachi. Check Mubarak surfing Village on facebook
@@jamespardue3055 They do actually. A giant swell needs to hit at the right angle. I'm planning on going there soon. I wonder how difficult it will be to get to that remote area.. hmm
The locals don't realize what they have. Waves in the western world translate into dollars. Legends are born in such places. Surf tourist can plant the seeds of surf by gifting boards to locals. Whole communities can be sustain by surf tourism alone if they are blessed with consistent surf.
Tough trip The spirit of surfing is actually dead these days people just want to follow each other follow the crowds are still plenty waves out there to be surfed
A cool trip to make. But Pakistan sure doesnt look like a that pleasent of a place. All that shoreline and everything still looks just grey brown and dusty, barely any vegetation.
Yep true, You would think those guys would be curious about riding waves but yeah, sometimes, some people just dont really care because they have such a tough life and think...differently. A good lesson for us...
good adventure film, however it was lacking any notable surf in a surprisingly surf rich area. but the amount of delays and permits the Pakistani's require was starting to make my blood boil. shame on them. good film and very intriguing area to search for surf!
Much appreciated. Coastline knowledge was faint at the time (lack of precise Google Earth imagery) and coastline access as you may imagine was highly time consuming. Hard to be at the right place at the right time for quality surf ! Even during 3 weeks trip. Hoepfully will get back someday !
it's hard to watch this and not think - why not bring along someone from pakistan (perhaps) who even lives abroad and could help navigate the cultural differences/language, an anthropologist from Pakistan living abroad for example? a Pakistani surfer living outside his/her country? and I just feel uncomfortable seeing westerners bargain down prices for things like a boat when there is no way you'd spend only $25 for a boat in the US or Europe (maintaining hierarchies across the globe) and convince a team of guards to accompany them in situations that would be risky for them, too. I hope they would do things differently today. Besides that, this must have been an incredible experience - what a total privilege to be able to see this part of the world!
Back in the days (2001), gathering that team and making it to Paksitan was laready quite a task. We would have loved to share our trip with various other people. Bargaining the boat was just a way not to disorganize the local market. When surfers land in a village and pay twice for surf transfers, then locals stop fishing and take surfers instead. trying to reduce our local impact. Not always feasible...

good on you guys for toughing that out. Seems like a miserable place
Some countries have the goods, others don’t. Very odd considering the proximity to Maldives, mentawais, and indo. What a trip
A true intrepid journey been on a few myself
THAT is what adventure looks like.

wow what an adventure
Uugh!!! Reminds me of my best friend when he was “dating” this ultra-hot, but 100% batshit CRAZY chick; 99% misery, 1% enjoyable!!! 😂
Not even the waves wants to go there.
Wow what a misconception: you think that everyone and everything is like you but I'd like to say that you are freaking wrong
Even you won't be able to survive the waves in pakistan.
@@manahilk I will survive just fine without them thank you.
6 camel loads of scotch, barrels, more hash than you could ever smoke. Many would argue they landed in Utopia!

what did your guides think when they saw the film? have they encountered many surfers since? and where is that surfer now?

Of course the guards weren't that impressed with your surfing. Seems pretty frivolous to people who struggle daily just to eat and stay safe.
Mirage's has potential. U guys are knarly
Seems like it has a lot of potential
Is there any way I can access the music in this doco? I can only find bonobo
Too bad they didn’t score, but according to friends of mine who have surfed there, Pakistan has a really good and long point break

Imagine how much better that country would be if there was no religion. Same could be said for the USA too.
