I dont understand people calling this piece "bland". It is an extremely interesting, masterfully composed symphony. In my opinion the first movement is one of the most beautiful adagios in the history of classical music.

Agreed. But to become acquainted with this music, one must listen to it several times. You cannot hear it for the first time and think: Well, I know now whether it is good or bad. You need to listen, let's say, 10 or 15 times, then you can grasp the melody lines, the composition, the beauty of the entire piece.

I, for one, find this symphony beautiful and rich, well worth hearing. As for the comparison with Howard Hanson, I fail to hear the relevance. They're not doing the same or similar things at all.

Apparently Myaskovsky was a shy person who never recovered from his experiences in WWI and the Revolution. I discovered him through his string quartets, a treasury of quiet, refined reflections. It's surprising that his music could have been written during the Soviet period. At the same time it was like a time warp, typically Romantic music being written regardless of the calendar.

It's actually not surprising at all. This type of music is EXACTLY what the soviet government wanted. That is why Myakskovsky wrote it this way. If you listen to his earlier Symphonies, that were written before the 1930's they are all much harsher and brooding.

Quotenwagnerianer the later music of myaskovsky was not by any means the propaganda music that the soviet authorities wanted, hence why his music was banned in 1948. Granted the 12th, 16th, and 18th symphonies were much more driven by the demands of the authorities however the same is not the case for his other symphonies. In fact the remarkable thing about Myaskovsky is how he was able to compose such personal, introverted music despite the ongoing political situation.

да нормально всё, он на классиконлайне в первой десятке русских композиторов. Он слишком интимный композитор, его эмоции понятны не каждому. И это хорошо!
