As an E1 owner I approve this video. :) I like where your thinking is regarding passenger transport ships and using the Orison Shuttle Transport as a base / inspiration is spot on.
Actually waiting with bated breath for the Genesis. I totally agree with the modularity concept for passenger, and even cargo applications. Having one frame with multiple uses is what makes the best current airliners feasible. Using the orison shuttle as a baseline for the Genesis makes sense for a base priced passenger ship, but I like the interior of the Phoenix for luxury, including the social space (made larger for the Genesis)
this concept reminds me a lot of elite dangerous passenger missions. that game's implementation also has the added benefit of allowing the module space to be used for other things allowing the passenger ships to be fitted for other gameplay and any other ship being able to run passenger missions. its a good idea
It's great to see someone talking about passenger transport and the starliner, I feel like it's largely forgotten by cig and the community. I hope the starliner gets a medical bay and perhaps a brig, both could be fun for players in social settings and great for NPCs.
I don’t think it’s been forgotten. A few years ago I might have agreed with you but when they introduced the E1 concept they basically confirmed this is still gonna be a thing in the game. The system requires ai that works reliably. Luckily, AI is a huge focus for them right now so once we have server meshing I think they can get started on coding some more complex ai behaviour that actually works in the game.
I find it kinda funny to think that the massive passenger spaceplane is essentially essentially a massive orison shuttle. It’d be like if instead of cruise ships we had massive versions of those propeller boats they have in swamps. I kinda love it
Expanding the Orison Skyway Shuttle to the E1 and Starliner ships as a transit package makes sense for Crusader, especially since they seem very keen on making Orison a tourism hotspot.
I love the look of the Genesis as it is now. Very elegant but clearly a behemoth of a ship at the same time. I personally think it combines the styles of origin (my second favorite manufacturer in game) and crusader. Makes perfect sense to me if crusader wanted a more luxury minded craft for their passengers
I never would have considered the similarities between the Genesis and the Orison Shuttle as far as passenger transport goes ..but it makes sense and tying passenger type and count to modules also adds flexibility and expandability to the ships as you could also have modules for passengers for other ships that could snap to a cargo grid or something. Plus smaller dedicated transports could also use similar modules which should allow the work done to be reused with minimal additional time expenditures.
I'm looking forward to your next video going into detail on where you do loading an unloading of luggage and maybe even vehicles. You could make the ship a double decker and keep part of it for cargo. I'd like to see a modified Orison skyway shuttle as a double decker as well. It would be used for touring planets. Maybe dining down below even.
Some great creativity there, and definitely see the inspiration of the Orison Skyway Shuttle. I know CIG won't likely keep the Genesis true to its concept art, but I kind wish they would.
I always liked the design of the Orison skyway shuttle, as it felt like a perfect representation of the Crusader design language but in a very small package. I suspect that CIG will likely release the Spirit E1 long before the Genesis, taking design queues and successes from both the E1 and the skyway shuttle.
That's a nice curve ball. The Orison sky way shuttle is a solid inspiration, and your idea of the cabins being spawn/depsawn closets is brilliant. Not sure CIG would have it so open (they seem to dislike windows), but internally this would work wonderfully.
I dig your ideas, though your design exactly. That's a triviality, though. It would be interesting to see concepts that took the Orison Shuttle + C2 as their starting point.
i think the skyway shuttle is a good starting point for an updated genesis. is the genesis starliner an older product from crusader, that could offer slight design differences than the newer builds. i dont know where it falls in lore, but it will be a great ship when it is done. jared will be very happy when john crew announces that they are working on it, lol. thank you danny
I really like the idea of using the Orison Shuttle as a base design, though I expect there's an intern somewhere at CIG who is very nervous about that idea. The ability to despawn NPCs is also a great idea, I don't know how they ever thought they'd be able to have something as server melting as a large economy class passenger transport in the game, you'd basically have to dedicate a meshed server to the ship to get it to actually run even if you got the NPCs otherwise working smoothly in the first place. There's a reason cities and towns are either barren or FPS killers in every other video game (BG3's act 3 town is used frequently for hardware FPS testing for this reason).
The passenger pods are a great idea, and makes me think of how passenger missions work in Elite Dangerous. You have different kinds of pods much like your idea, and that determines the capacity. I'm probably forgetting details, but it could definitely work in SC with the NPCs streaming in and out only as a player sees them. As for the Genesis design, I'd go two directions with it. Keep the concept, but move it to Esperia. Call it the Esperia Genesis, and at the same time unveil the Crusader Starliner, which can take more cues from the Hercules and Orison shuttle. People who pledged initially would get a CCU token similar to how the F7A worked on the backend, in case they wanted to stick with the looks, and the new Crusader ship would follow the current style guidelines. It'd make sense from a lore standpoint that there'd be more than one type of passenger ship in the 'verse, and it'd be an easy way to get out of the design corner the Starliner is stuck in.
Passenger transport seems like a very chill profession. Of course, just like in the real world, people will be people and ruin it as passengers. Such is life for an Orison Skyway Shuttle Pilot.
Yup the NPC AI is definitely the main blocker on getting the Starliner working in the game - probably needs dynamic server meshing (possibly allowing the ship to be treated as its own server when it's fully populated) to get the NPCs to behave - right now they can get themselves stuck on an Orison Skyways shuttle. Allowing NPCs to 'despawn' into their virtualised form whilst they are out of sight would be logical - maybe hang a 'Do Not Disturb' on the cabin door ;) although what happens in an emergency situation (e.g. abandon ship) would require all the entities to be reconstituted at once, which might cause the ship/server to glitch at a bad time. Perhaps they need a (literal) sleep mode for passengers
I suspect we'll also get either Starliner variants or modularity with it, given CIG's recent pattern of releasing more variants and the recent introduction of modularity. I doubt it'll have a high number of modules, probably no more than 10, maybe around 4-8 modules, if any. The Orison shuttle is a great place to start when imagining what a larger passenger transport ship might look like. I do hope we get an update at Citcon on NPC ship nav mesh to enable passenger transport missions, and then they can start working on the E1 and Genesis.
Orison shuttle seems like a fine basis. With lots of touches from the phoenix and 890. I wonder if server meshing is what they are waiting for since I believe they had said ship interiors could be their own servers so any issues of passengers acting weird because of server load could be fixed just by new core systems.
I like your idea of the spawn closet cabins, but the appearance of anything close to that would make many owners livid. The looks of the Orison shuttle work because it looks like a ski gondola, but to make a super-sized version of a mostly glass doesn't feel right.
Crusader has so many good designs. I'm happy to be a C1 owner for sure, I don't love the Hercules designs, they're a bit too boaty, and the Orison skyway shuttles are a bit boring, but the Ares, MSR, Spirit.... Dang! Hoping we get more good looking Crusader ships soon!
The Orison skyway shuttle would be a good starting off point, but it seems CIG will have to stray far from the original concept art of the Genesis Starliner to line up with the current design cues of Crusader Industries. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.
Interesting concept re-concept. Not sure how they would handle the npc-despawn with all the orison shuttle style glass but otherwise looks pretty dope.
5:11 If you think seat entities snapped to a cargo grid in a ship designed for passenger transport in slightly different configurations is going to be a problem for NPC traversal, I cannot wait to hear what you think malestrom destructible environments is going to do to them. A 100 seat sardine genesis based on the Orison Shuttle Transport is the least of our worries.
7:45 I like the layout and the very smart way of limiting entities on a server, but I question if that much glass would negate it being a spawn closet since anyone outside would be able to see inside. I guess you could lore around that by making them mirrored glass on the outside and since players would not be occupying those rooms at all, we would not need to be able to see a player inside them. For the player version you mentioned, those pieces of glass could be transparent as is pictured in your concept. I know it is a rough concept still but it seems to be blending the 2 style languages of the C2 and the Orison Shuttle Transport. I like the design of the modular passenger pods as they mimic the shuttle. At this point the Hercules is the most outdated style language of any crusader ship. Also not a fan of the struts on the top panoramic roof. That is not in any Crusader ship especially the Shuttle. It is basically a single canopy in the passenger middle and nose section separated by the door structure. Would like to see the same trapezoidal raised style glass instead of the pointed peak. Maybe use some sort of hull design into the wings to separate the front section styled like the shuttle, it could blend into the canard wings in some way. Then the rest could be just that trapezoidal shape from the shuttle as well. I love the work and I love the layout. Some more style from the Ares, Spirit, and Shuttle would be great. It kinda looks like a C2 back that is sticking out its tongue in the shape of that passenger section. Can't wait to see the final product. I guarantee it will be better thought out than whatever CIG lands on.
Great video Daniel. Love the flow of ideas, including your recent ground vehicle tractor beam bobcat. I understand the design cues you used. That said, as outdated as it is, the original concept looks like a vessel that would still spend a fair amount of time in the atmosphere. This is something the C2 pulls off very nicely. It looks like it incorporates aerodynamic design. I love your redesign. That said, the hull, for the most part, still looks very space based, not adding much for aerodynamics. The canards, as a result, look a little at odds with the rest of the hull. My question, is this still a ship that navigates regularly in atmosphere, and does the hull reflect that, or would it use docking ports at stations predominantly, thereby rendering the canards merely as additional weight needing to be toted around? Perhaps the answer will be in the next video. I await it eagerly.
I really don't think they'll change it from the concept art at this point, since they've gotten a lot of backlash from previous ships where they strayed from the concept art too much, even if it was well warranted. So as much as I think they SHOULD re-concept the body shape entirely to match the current design guide.. there is something to say it could be an older design guide from Crusader, say, 100 years ago. I think they'll update little things, but I'd be a little surprised if it varies much.
I really hope we get the more classic, curved Hurcules lines for the Genesis. They'll likely go with tilt-up wing-tip thrusters for VTOL rather than atmo-dependent fan blades. Which will mean that the wings and canards will get more of the modern Crusader silhouette. It's supposed to be one of their older ships. I do think there's a good chance that it's grown is size and scope over time. Why? Two reasons. First, it was released at the second Invictus after the IAE where the BMM was released, as a mercantile Connie competitor, for the insane price of $250 once you added the Alien Tax. The Genesis cost $400. And we know how much the BMM has grown. Second, have you seen Jared _every time_ it comes up. He looks like a kid who's just won a shopping spree to a candy store. In terms of more recent assets, until we get a look at the E1, I suspect that the Orison shuttles are the best look at moder Crusader economy seating. Though, I'm sure it'll be nicer. International airlines always have nicer seats than the city bus. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
The failure idea is actually important, these needs applied also to the hauling missions. Thae cargo delivery should be counted even if the elevator doesn't work. A friend just got hosed because he found a non functional elevator, which auto failed though he made a gorgeous mountion a 104 size 4 boxes of scrap at Samsons...
I dont think that a full despawn will be working since it would feel odd to have a ship with rooms that you can not enter to. Instead one can take a note out of the handbook of Hitman and how they generate crowds. Most of the NPCS that are in a crowd walking and standing around are really dummed down versions. While a few have the normal amount of npc behavoir. Regardless it will require a lot of occlusion and other techniques to hide them when nobody is looking to prevent the star liner from lagging the server. The orison shuttle is a interesting inspiration but i think they will stay closer to the orginal proposed design rather then wide long windows all around. After all the shuttle is a "ground" vehicle. It will never leave the safety of the atmosphere of Orision so it needs far less protection then a ship designed to fly through the dangers of space.
Correct, the starliner can not be delivered in the stlye its promoted (still to this day) - and i really hote that it will get more influenced by Hercules C2, E1 or even the Orison shuttle.
I'm not sure where the right point on the spectrum between the utility of the C2 Hercules and the elegance of the Orison Skyway shuttle is for a passenger ship.
It has a nice mix of designs from Crusader ships, but it feels a bit too "Viking River Cruise" boat for my tastes. Still an improvement over the massive hulk of 1950s Gemini original design.
They should have been designing the game for customization like this from the start. Wanna run an uber style transport with your Cutty Black? Do it! Wanna turn your Valkyrie into a battlefield tour bus? Absolutely! It's like with CIG placing static decorations in our hangar. No! Let us be creative about how we do it. That's the whole point of a sandbox.
They don't want to unleash players completely. That usually leads to Fornite stupidity. SC is a MMO with vibes of single-player game, the NPCs might add inmersion and context to the verse where players could break it while being too creative.
@@Haegemon I get that, but that's not what a sandbox is. CIG wants to have their cake and eat it too. Case in point: Cities aren't realistic, but the inventory system needs to be? Space combat isn't realistic and either is how often we need to eat and drink, but I need to take a box down into a bunker to loot because MMO looting mechanics aren't realistic enough? I just wish CIG had some consistency. They don't though and that starts at the top.
Those Orrison shuttles kinda freak me out on a realism level. Do the busses/trains in your city have a 0.0000% breakdown rate? The trains in Loreville and New Babbage are trains on rails, and In A18 the shuttles at least have a surface to emergency land/crash into. Not so on Orrison.
not being familiar with the original starliner concept and given that the skyway shuttle and hercules are designed to fly in atmosphere would this also mean the starliner is primarily designed to land on planets? i would be more interested to see what a long haul interstellar passenger ship would look like in sc.
I do remember them advertising military transport versions of the star liner. That is true. To build off that idea, while using historical examples, during wartime, ocean liners were pressed into service as troop transports and hospital ships. However, they were never designed with this in mind. With the modularity of Ray’s design, though, I think you could easily outfit one of these as a military transport vessel, but it will never “look” the part, nor be as effective as a military transport that has been designed as one from the ground up.
Many people during the early sales talked about usin their Genesis as a mobile headquarters for a racing team, or a command and control center or whatever. It has a fair deal of cargo.
sorry Ray, I do not need to imagine a use case for the Starliner. I just need CIG to actually finish the existing game before adding more useless Tier 0 single game loop which have no interaction with rest of game loops.
Orders of magnitude improvement in any feature of this game are never going to happen, not even to the Orison Shuttle. They will still kill you from time to time. Mostly because the problems are fundamental to the engine and what little "physics" are in the game.
As an E1 owner I approve this video. :)

The Orison skyway shuttle sounds a solid inspiration for airline type of ships.
The orison skyway shuttle was probably the best place to really see what might get when the starliner finally gets worked on.
Expanding the Orison Skyway Shuttle to the E1 and Starliner ships as a transit package makes sense for Crusader, especially since they seem very keen on making Orison a tourism hotspot.

So many people wanted to buy those Orison skyway shuttles. I really hope we see the Genesis in game in the future.
I never took the Orison skyway shuttle, but i fully agree on the need for modular passenger ships.
I just cannot wait for the gameplay loop to include things like instructing people to stay in their pods during pirate attacks.
Taking inspiration from the Orison Skyways Shuttle is inspired!
When passenger transport system arrives, it will bring more life into game. That will be nice add!
People love the Orison Skyway Shuttle so much they want to buy it! I will be happy with just my E1.
I can see your C2, E1 and Ares inspiration coming through. Nice design - I like it.
I do like the idea of having a massively modular ship for the genesis star liner. The Orison shuttle is a good idea For a starting point

I love the Orison skyway shuttle.
You know, I never even thought about the Orison shuttles being Crusader-built.
Nicely done. I do like the design of shuttles in Orison, I think it would serve a crusader starliner justice
When Orison first came in some people wanted to buy the skyway shuttle
I love this video. Can’t wait to take the Orison shuttle to the next one!

By far the ship that never appealed to me was the E1, but i've gotta say, the interior is pretty nice.
The Orison Skyway shuttle raises another issue with the spawn locker idea: An interior with heavy use of windows is unsuitable for a spawn locker.

Keep up the great work
I always wondered why they didn't make a quick and dirty revamp of the Orison Shuttles into an MPUV style passenger snub...
I like your idea of the spawn closet cabins, but the appearance of anything close to that would make many owners livid. The looks of the Orison shuttle work because it looks like a ski gondola, but to make a super-sized version of a mostly glass doesn't feel right.
Well I was certainly off. But having an Orison Shuttle handy in your back yard would have been pretty neat. ;-)

The Orison Skyway shuttles make me nervous. I got ejected from one for no apparent reason once and I haven’t trusted them since.
The Starliner is a retro desing, it could be an unchanged concept. And later be updated to a Mk.II

I'm not sure where the right point on the spectrum between the utility of the C2 Hercules and the elegance of the Orison Skyway shuttle is for a passenger ship.
I really like this
It has a nice mix of designs from Crusader ships, but it feels a bit too "Viking River Cruise" boat for my tastes. Still an improvement over the massive hulk of 1950s Gemini original design.
Reminds me of the new Babbage train
Somebody had to redesign it, please finish it CIG
I guess we'll see, but the skyways shuttle isn't the pinnacle of cool
Any idea if we will be able to purchase a modified skyway shuttle?
This reminds me of Homer’s car.
You took all its Aura 😭
Hopefully this Starliner will not fly like the BOEING Starliner
HAHAHAHA 😆
not being familiar with the original starliner concept and given that the skyway shuttle and hercules are designed to fly in atmosphere would this also mean the starliner is primarily designed to land on planets? i would be more interested to see what a long haul interstellar passenger ship would look like in sc.
Planets are where the people are so yes it will be like the starlifter.
good logic. tho id hope people are also in space in a space game :P
Just a Question does your redesign of the Genesis Starliner have the ability to do other jobs then passenger transport?
The video only talks about passenger transport. The official Starliner is only imagined to be a comercial airliner anyways.
It has a fair deal of cargo.
crusader has as many styles as it does ship chassis at this point. Orison Shuttle Transport just being a single one of them.
I want my Olympic Carrier with no guns. I don't understand how a passenger ship has guns.
1st like, first comment :-). That’s a first!
It won't have enough doorways like the MSR.
sorry Ray, I do not need to imagine a use case for the Starliner. I just need CIG to actually finish the existing game before adding more useless Tier 0 single game loop which have no interaction with rest of game loops.
Are you a copy of Roys Guide?
I'm not a fan of the Orison Shuttle
Orders of magnitude improvement in any feature of this game are never going to happen, not even to the Orison Shuttle. They will still kill you from time to time. Mostly because the problems are fundamental to the engine and what little "physics" are in the game.
