- West Side Lumber, Shay #9, puts on a good show on a beautiful August day in Georgetown, Colorado. The Shay will not be in Colorado much longer as it is due to return to Iowa after the season is over. Another steam locomotive will take its place. The very popular Georgetown loop railroad is a must see for any rail fan visiting Colorado. Filmed August, 2018.
I really dig that Southern Pacific 6 chime.❤️🚂
Sounds like NKP 765's old whistle from the 80's and 90's.
when I was a kit I used to turn my nose to any logging line that wasn't narrow gauge but that was before Cass and now I definitely see the value of standard gauge in those mountains. now I find myself asking why a line went narrow more than why they went standard. probably due to the abundance of 3 foot gauge stock in the west back then.
I’m from Mt Pleasant and I miss #12 already
i am from Tuoulumne Co. West Side Lumber Company. # 9 hauled logs for many years. We miss her.
I rode this loop with a Shay back in 2000!
What whistle does the number 9 shay use at Georgetown here?!
SP 6 Chime.
Is this a narrow - gauge train? Never seen an engine like this one, the drive system is kind of unique, isn't it? There are shafts and pistons mounted on the outside of the engine - no drivers mounted directly onto the wheels like on "ordinary" steam engines! And what is the notation, please?
This is narrow gauge. The locomotive is a Shay locomotive with a geared drive system. It is a very unique locomotive and a powerful one too. More can be found here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shay_locomotive
Thank you, have just read the Wikipedia entry. There is a nice picture of no. 9 Shay. Looks like a ship's in - line engine mounted directly to the crankshaft. A design never used in Germany!
what locomotive is going to replace it?
The have a 2-8-0 #111 that is already been working all season. I will be doing some videos on that locomotive pretty soon.
i meant what locomotive is going to replace the shay?
The 2-8-0 #111.
but the 2-8-0 is already operating? I'm confused.
Yes it is. The Shay normally operates only when the #111 is down for maintenance.
She shouldn't go back to Iowa. I say send her home to California, to join her sister, #7, in Felton.
Would rather her go to Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine. That place is the spitting image of the West Side, and she'd be at home with her sisters. Felton is great, I love the place and grew up there, but it really is just a glorified theme park.
