Shout outs are always the signature of a western. All movies including The Wild Bunch, The long Riders, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, For a Few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dollars, Duck You Sucker and all the rest are memorable by their shoot outs. Not that the films are terrible without. It just adds the icing on the cake. The slow mos here are awesome!
What, a great scene. I remember watching this on Select TV ( an old private movie channel), when I was in 6th grade (1980), and thinking not only how cool this movie was, but how “kick ass” this scene is. 👍
@@RandomDudeOne Certain parts of this are pretty accurate to history. Cole Younger was actually shot 11 times in total during the escape from Northfield
Not sure how historically accurate this scene was, but sure fun to watch. Glad those six shooters had high capacity magazines, otherwise that shootout would have only lasted about 30 seconds :) In spite of all the Hollywood silliness, it's still one of my favorite westerns.
This is deemed to be the most accurate depiction of the escape from Northfield. The only thing that's a little off at times is exactly how many times and where on their body certain gang members were shot. For instance, Cole Younger, was actually shot even more in real life, 11 times in total, and still managed to get out and continue his escape on foot with his two brothers, from the persuing Pinkertons.
Total genius. I feel the same excitement every time I watch this. The other day I watched Gangs of New York for the first time and there are no scenes with this level of impact whatsoever.
It´s a tribute to Sam Peckinpah, but on the other hand a quite precise report of what happened that day, according to eyewitnesses and local newspapers. The Younger brothers took a lot of bullets that day, for sure. Powerful scene from an overall great movie.
Good comment.I saw this movie alone in the cinema when I was about 5 yrs. old. When I was outside, after the projection,I had the feeling of something like a desperate run for survival.Actually I like survival movies now, like Open water 2 for example.

Yeah Cole Younger was wounded 6 times riding out from Northfield, Jim Younger 5 times, Bob Younger 3 times. Frank James wounded once, Charley Pitts 3 times, Bill Chadwell shot in the heart & killed and Clell Miller first wounded by shotgun blast and then killed with a single rifle slug that left him dead in the street. Only Jesse made it out of Northfield unscathed.
Jesse James was 16 years old when he joined his brother Frank and they fought with Bloody Bill Anderson and never more than 80 men and they fought the Union soldiers who were greater in numbers so they used guerilla war tactics, they fought on their horses and every man had at least 3 revolvers, that gave them 18 shots each but they had to get in there close and ride like hell and they truly were damn fine warriors! The earliest photo of Jesse shows him with one revolver in his hand and 2 more tucked in his waist, he was a hardened veteran before he was 18 years old,,,
The level of intensity is beyond it's time. Yes, yes Taxi Driver, Straw Dogs and other films were made before this but as far as I'm concerned nothing before this held the same slow motion style shots.
One of the best, "western shootouts" I had ever seen up to that point. Love the sound effects with the hits! Fairly accurate depiction of the shootout too. Of course there were NOT that many town folks shooting at them. But they did ALL ride into town wearing identical dusters! That arose suspicion right there. The safe scene is ironic because it was actually unlocked! The shooting of the bank guy was claimed to have been an "accident."
By the time Walter Hill's "The Long Riders" opens on September 18, 1980 in New York City, the sound effects editing team at SoundStorm (formerly WallaWorks) at Columbia Studios nearby the Katharine Hepburn Stage in Culver City, California, USA. Its first film sound editing credit was Universal's "FM" (1978) under the supervision of Gordon Ecker, Marvin Walowitz, their effects editors Lon Bender, Andrew London, Joseph Holsen and their assistant, Bob Newlan. Several other hits such as "The Brink's Job" (1978), "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980) - Oscar Nominee, 1981; MPSE Golden Reel Nominee, 1981 and BAFTA Nominee, 1982 etc. But with "The Long Riders," the sound editing team was honored an 1981 MPSE Golden Reel Nominee - Best Sound Editing, Effects.
*wow **_The Wild Hunt Of Odin_** painting comes to life, Incredible shootout scene & amazing apocalyptic* *sound effects, trust the badass Walter Hill for no bullshit action. ( Real filmmakers who didn't need* *pussy CGI's )*
Cole Younger wore his buffalo leather vest this day. He was hit 7 times. And any one has gotten at least a dozen six shooters..just kidding. Great Western.
For those saying they missed a lot, well that's real fellas, most men in the town while they would own guns would not be dead shots and would im sure be aiming and firing from cover and trying to not get there heads blown off. I think I remember they did a study of the battle of Gingindlovu in the anglo Zulu war, and they found that the british army of 5,000 or so men fired a hell of a lot of bullets to kill the 700 or so Zulus who charged them, meaning most men missed with the majority of there shots. So it proves that men will fire and aim, but so many factors come into play then
Bob Younger was wounded in the right elbow and left hip by rifle fire, Cole Younger both shoulders, right arm, left hip, and both thighs, Jim Younger both shoulders, right thigh, left calf muscle, and right arm. Charley Pitts wounded in right shoulder and bullet grazes to the left ankle and wrist. Bill Chadwell had some birdshot in his back and left shoulder but later was killed with bullet in the heart, Frank James wounded in the left calf of his leg, Jesse was unscathed at Northfield.
Classic scene from a great movie. Apart from being a tribute to Sam Peckinpah it´s also surprisingly close to the facts and to what happened to the Younger-James-Gang in Northfield.
Clell Miller in real life was hit in the forehead, left eye, mouth, and jaw by a shotgun blast of birdshot that knocked him off his horse. He later remounted in a fiery rage and began firing away both pistols crazily at the citizens firing at him. He really was armed with two Smith & Wesson Schofield revovlers 44-caliber chrome plated. Eyewitnesses say he was responsible for killing Nicholas Gustavson a Swedish college student who was running across the street in the crossfire and Miller in an angry rage shot him in the head killing him instantly. Just then Henry Wheeler a Northfield citizen in the third floor window of a hotel fired an Army carbine in .45.50 caliber variety down at him from 75 yards into Miller's left shoulder severing his main artery knocking him off his horse second time, killing him.
@iliapopovich alrigh thanks for the info. i've just started watching western movies hehe. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly didn't have many shootouts but it had a good story. That's the first i've watched so far.
@TheTrba Oh the director of this film use to work with Sam Peckinpah. Peckinpah would of loved this film, I don't know if he saw it but during that time his health was going downhill. If it wasn't for that, he would have had about 5 more good westerns left in him.
This part cuts it off, but IRL Clell Miller was killed in town along with Bill Chadwell. Charlie Pitts escaped, but was killed later in southern Minnesota.
I've seen almost all of em from Shane to the remake of 310 To Yuma. So far nothing beats the unique cinematography, epic story, and the acting from Once Upon A Time from The West. (Im so glad Sergio got Bronson instead of Eastwood) I also like the shootouts it had because they were a bit more realistic. (even though they only had 4 or so) if i wanted a gun porn western id just go watch The Quick and the dead. (terrible movie)
Oh wow... I forgot to mention the soundtrack from Once Upon A Time In The West, which is probably the greatest soundtrack for a western in my opinion. Fail me...
really when they were filming look at the man fell off the horse going through the window I knew a friend of Carradines and the guy under the horses stunt man got really hurt
i see you you speak about the stunt.I dont know about that, but in the real shooting this one survived all those bullets. And actually the jump trough the windows never had happened.
where's their artillery expert to act as a sort of continuity supervisor to keep from having such an obvious error? sheesh - this is actually FUNNY because they don't reload... lmao
The people in the tab dusters so basically the good guys in this are like my posse in red dead redemption we ride into a single town all 8 of us and fuck up everyone else in the game lobby
Yeah when they took Cole Younger into custody after this I don't remember I think he had at least 7 slugs in his body. Definitely a bank job gone bad, and you must admit the good people of Northfield, Minnesota could shoot.
I've seen The Wild Bunch, but this shootout is particular. It has nothing to do with the other movie and by the way the escape through the windows is the only inaccuracy in the script from a historical point of view as it never happened, it was just a spectacular add-on.
I'LL SAY this , who ever the stuntmen were , they certainly earned there keep making this film.
One of the best western shootouts in cinema history

Best shoot out ever in a western EVER!!
Entertaining but not realistic in any way.
@@RandomDudeOne Certain parts of this are pretty accurate to history. Cole Younger was actually shot 11 times in total during the escape from Northfield

David Carradine rocks here..What a badass western this movie is!
The Best Late Western beside Heavens Gate-BOTH AMERICAN HISTORY-MANY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE TO HEAR THAT...🇺🇲🗽🇺🇲🗽🇺🇲🗽

I love gritty western scenes... !
This movie seems pretty awesome.
Tell me this isn't the greatest shootout ever filmed
Sam Peckinpah would have been proud
It´s a tribute to Sam Peckinpah, but on the other hand a quite precise report of what happened that day, according to eyewitnesses and local newspapers. The Younger brothers took a lot of bullets that day, for sure. Powerful scene from an overall great movie.

Quinten Nelson and very soon was killed. It's like the movie "Final Destination", you can't escape from your destiny
Илиян Попов Yep shot in back of the head by Bob Ford St. Joseph, Missouri.

Powerful scene, it gives me chills
missouri guerillas carried at least four revolvers on them at a time, they didnt have to reload, they changed guns

Jim K true
The best western EVER!!
I found the tree branch/clothes line move pretty funny!
Brilliant underated film
Given a choice, I'd rather get shot with the ammo they had back then, rather than the deadly stuff nowadays....
@blowfish3 They were reloading while the cameras were off them .... cant you tell you silly thing :-)

The James - Younger Gang gets in a deadly shootout during a bank robbery at Northfield Minnesota
The Northfield raid was a mistake. Lots of other targets. James/Younger gang got greedy.
Brilliant western!!!! Walter Hill at his best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
この馬でガラスを割るシーンがたまらなく好きだ。今は動物愛護とかで多分撮れない
Great movie.
George Vreeland Hill
The gang should have stayed down south where the pickings were easy.
Hell even some measly square heads can put up a fight if they set up and have time to plan out an ambush
Thanks for the reference. Isn't it annoying how TH-cam fights posting links?
how do the horses not get shot

Starting at 1:08, it looked like Robert Carradine almost wiped out from making a sharp turn.
Epic
yeah, hill trying to imitate peckinpah with the slow motion effects from the Wild bunch 1969.these guys must to have had 12 shooters?
Tribute to Sam Peckinpah and The Wild Bunch.
I heard the guy under the horses really got hurt ,,crazy
Lori Wise as I remember he probably had about 24-25 bullets in his body, but he survived

not so many cretin.
who wants to be sam peckinpah?
More than your average amount of loaded guns holstered per man perhaps?
Never seen The Outlaw Josey Wales?
I did.
Great scene, but all copied from the Master Sam Peckinpah. Watch The Wild Bunch! 😉

some pretty inaccurate shooters
