I find the irony here interesting. Jesse (only lightly wounded apparently) talked about having to ride, and abandoned his comrades. And he was shot in the back of the head a few years later. Frank clearly had a conscience and at least regretted leaving his comrades. And later. he was able to salvage part of his life. With 11 bullets in him, Cole refused to abandon his brothers and not only survived, but managed to go on with his life after prison. Even though Jim eventually killed himself over a woman, he lived to get out of prison.
Neither of the James Brothers were wounded so they could ride. Jesse lived that way his whole life. Frank was older and had a chance to see the world without violence, but that's all Jesse knew.
