There are quite a few of these out in the civilian world. They aren't particularly expensive, but generally sell for more than what you can buy a new KLR650 for. There's a reason why they only made a few hundred of them, they aren't as amazing as people think they are.
Yup, they really only exist to meet the military's fueling requirements. Unless you're sitting on a tanker of diesel/Jet A at home, this bike is worse in every way than a normal KLR.

The military doesn't just have diesel motorcycles. They have diesel ATVs and snowmobiles, too. They have them so they can use the same fuels as their trucks, tanks and other equipment. These engines will burn #2 diesel, kerosene, jet fuel and heating oil.
The main attraction of these diesel USMC bikes was fuel economy. Every long distance adventure bike rider has one mortal enemy........having to carry large amounts of gasoline. These bikes were an adaption of the Suzuki DR650 gasoline engine and are not a 'ground up' diesel design. IF it was a pure diesel design, it would start perfect and run a lot smoother........especially if the designers used a 2 stroke GM style engine. thanks for the video.
0:40 As a certified technician from Mercedes specialised in the otto and diesel engine types, I think I can say this with full confidence; I'm sorry, but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that a naturally aspirated, not to mention a single cylindered diesel engine would put out 420 horsepowers. 🤣
This thing probably has glow plugs instead of spark plugs? If so you probably need the key turned on for a Lil before starting it
Who wears short shorts? Ladyboys.
i remember thinking to myself in the past " why is there no diesel motorcycle out there?!" so it actually exists ehehe nice to see i love diferent engines and aproaches and this motorcycle fits/fills the needs in camp/action - nice. eco, reliable and you can actually toe something with that torque.. like a tent in a box with 2 wheels or with cargo inside. i would love to see how that engine actually works.. how many cilinders?! fuel is pumped mecanically? electrically?
They kinda suck but they do have advantages im suprised there has been few who ventured into that abyss.
Why wouldn't it be equipped with a kickstart instead? wouldn't that be in the interest for military applications?
Not gonna lie the diesel dirt bike kind of reminds me The worthog from the video game Halo
Ill buy a diesel motorcycle but it needs to be reliable and sorta like a honda africa twin or a klr or dr650 but i also need it to have cruise control and go 85 all day long. Are these things even possible idk? But I like the sound of 90+ mpg in a diesel engine. Thats honda grom mog but i bet you have enough torque to pull a motorcycle trailer if you wanted
they made 214. I was told they lost the ability to get the donor bike from Kawasaki and couldn't produce the numbers the military wanted.
I remember watching u years ago, found u again and subbed again on another account
Funny how he need to wake up ! This sleepy diesel 😂 when normal startup's bikes start from second 😅
Soldier, how did you brake your leg? I kick-started the Diesel bike - it kicked BACK! And your broken armes? "I stuck in the tank solid handlebar!"
the JP8 on the gas tank means it will run on jetfuel as well....
Does anyone know what that tube is for that comes out of the fuel tank cap?
Another question i have is, is the ignition key removable or is it welded in place like someone wrote in the description of one that was on autction once.
it's a KLR right?? Had the 650 (benzin) 20 years ago!
I always wanted to be one of the guys who rode these...but they were motor transport. IIRC they were used as scouts for convoys.
You should be starting with wot to get the correct timing advance from the inj pump
maybe i missed it, but whats the range one one of those? i suspect it would be very high miles per gallon, perfect for trips across the world
I have a friend who rode a dirt bike in Charlie Co with the 75th ranger battalion...👍👌🤙...,..
Hello so a great idea for the bike would be to test its towing capacity just start hooking stuff up to it and see if it will pull them… atvs cars trucks etc maybe. A tree
Great idea, More Range and more Torque.
That thing is amazing . Sounds exactly the same as my 1984 xr250
Nah your xr sounds way better trust me this video doesn't really do the sound 100
iT WOULD BE GREAT FOR THOS TIGHT TRAILS UP STEEPS where your 2 strok spins the tires & bounses a little left & right and wont climb. But eat dust on a track i think.
I’m so bummed that I didn’t disassemble one of these and send it back from Afghanistan in pelican cases 😭😭. Also I’m almost certain the 2 that are known here in the states are the 2 I sent back from Afghanistan in 2013 off of fire base fiddlers green stuffed in an ISO container
Torque to pull through muc or up sand dunes. No need for separate fuel from what military has on base
Is it knocking or is it just how Its supposed to sound cause it sounds a lot like my Toyota before it never started again
9:20 "This thing was out in Afghanistan, taking down some Saudis"? Saudis live in Saudi Arabia. Afghans live in Afghanistan. WTF?
Same….
Also… The Saudis are our biggest allies in the Middle East. 🤷🏼
Glad someone else caught that. 1:34 he said it here too.
The military doesn't just have diesel motorcycles. They have diesel ATVs and snowmobiles, too. They have them so they can use the same fuels as their trucks, tanks and other equipment. These engines will burn #2 diesel, kerosene, jet fuel and heating oil.
is that a XT600 chasis? or XR
"JP8" on the tank: it runs on jet fuel. Try get your hands on some JP8 and you will see it runs much better.
I wonder if it was boosted if it would run better
The main attraction of these diesel USMC bikes was fuel economy. Every long distance adventure bike rider has one mortal enemy........having to carry large amounts of gasoline. These bikes were an adaption of the Suzuki DR650 gasoline engine and are not a 'ground up' diesel design. IF it was a pure diesel design, it would start perfect and run a lot smoother........especially if the designers used a 2 stroke GM style engine. thanks for the video.
Well it was intended that way they were all conversions. I kinda want a diesel motorcycle that was built for it from the getgo. Built like a tank
It might use some Kawasaki parts, but the engine was designed to be a diesel, not a conversion.

As a certified technician from Mercedes specialised in the otto and diesel engine types, I think I can say this with full confidence; I'm sorry, but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that a naturally aspirated, not to mention a single cylindered diesel engine would put out 420 horsepowers. Not even with a turbo installed, it would.
