Леонид Михайлович - человек красоты невероятной и притягательной! И под стать его красоте и красота его голоса! Наилучшее исполнение этого произведения, которое Харитонов превратил в шедевр и своим вокалом, и своим актёрским мастерством, и своим очарованием! Гордость наша! А в песне отражено наше время - очень тонко, иронично и пророчески.
A wonderfully roguish and assured performance. Maestro Kharitonov seems to inhabit the life of the flea, his benefactor the King, and the discomforture of the Queen and the courtiers is palpable.. A great part for a bass baritone or even a bass to sing.

Most singers mess this up, they cannot follow up the laugh. Leonid's performance in this song is the best one, as always, he enters the story he's singing about and don't put only his voice, but his soul on the song. Wonderful

Thank you for such interesting and pleasant comment! Yes, this song was always very popular in Russia and surely was one of the best hits of L.Kharitonov! As you might noticed the music was written in 1879 by Musorgsky. Shalyapin did it as well!

Mikhail, thanks for the upload. In my opinion, your father's performance is better than the recordings of Chaliapin, Kipnis, Christoff, and many other greats. The only one I like even better than his is that of the incomparable Lawrence Tibbett (th-cam.com/video/atd3riaQmnU/w-d-xo.html).
This recording also led me to check Wikipedia's article on your late father, and I read something that I found hard to believe. Quoting a review in The Times (of London?), it says: "Leonid Kharitonov chose Di Quella Pira as an encore and sang it magnificently." Since I have never even heard a baritone sing DQP, let alone a deep basso, I was wondering if you could confirm that, and if so, is there any recording available of him singing it?
Dear Leo, I've never heard my father singing DQP in my life and don't even remember him mentioning that fact. So I doubt that he sang it in London then.
@@LHaritonov I figured, because unlike a soft Neapolitan song that can easily be transposed downward, this is a high-lying aria that would lose its whole flavor if transposed downward a few tones. It's just odd because it brings the entire quote from a review article from The Times entitled "Sing-for-ever Red Army Men", on March 31, 1967, which states: "There are eight solo singers whose range of songs is as wide as the convention allows - Leonid Kharitonov chose Di quella pira as an encore and sang it magnificently - who sing well and dispense encores lavishly, dropping charmingly into English now and again." Perhaps he was not yet famous, and the reviewer simply confused his name with that of another singer. In any case, your father sounded fantastic, and this has now interested me in hearing more of him on TH-cam. Thanks for the uploads.
