- We just bought the reproduction of the aluminium Swedish M44 mess kit from Self Reliance Outfitters, Pathfinder School, which is Dave Canterbury's survival and outdoor school and shop. We are very impressed with the 304 stainless steel reproduction as it is much safer than cooking with aluminum pots and pans, and even the windshield is steel so that a wood fire is possible in it if you run out of fuel. Also you could burn hexamine Esbit tablets or alcohol gel fuels in the PFM40.
Later we will take it out for a test cook on a suitable day. Thanks for watching!! Please like and subscribe, it really helps us do more content.
We bought the Self Reliance Outfitters Pathfinder PFM40 Swedish Mess Kit reproduction for just over $40 (on sale) to see how it compares to the original, antique, Swedish military M40 which is hard to obtain at a reasonable price these days. We are very pleased with the PFM40 as it is a quality reproduction in 304 stainless steel set including the windshield so much safer and you could light a twig fire in the windshield in an emergency and not melt it.
It's a good piece of kit for motorcycle camping, car camping and emergencies like hurricanes. Marine alcohol is easy to find in most countries and burns clean and silently, the sound of butane stoves is annoying. Trangias are slow but relaxing in nature. A jetboil or Svea 123 is as annoying as a person with a boombox at a camp site!
Thank you for the video. I didn't even know that there was such a copy of the Swedish cauldron. I want to say that I have been using this for a long time (I have an aluminum version) for motorcycle trips. The only minus for me is a large volume for 1 person. I take it when I go on a trip for more than 2 days, and if my wife is with me.
@krepysh_moto yes great for a couple or 3 people and motorcycle or car camping where the weight is not an issue❤
Do more reviews on this PFM40 please
Thanks, will do!
A very well made reproduction. The over priced used examples on ebay have been badly painted & used as footballs. I prefer this to my Trangia 27 for motorcycle touring here in Australia. Thank you for sharing 👍
Agreed...we do motorcycle trips with it too and appreciate the stainless steel!
Yes, the Stainless Steel M40 they are over priced! This one is a good reproduction though...especially now the windshield is also steel and you can light a twig/wood fire in it.
Agreed, great for motorcycle and car camping as it is a bit heavy. Aluminium has a possible safety issue.
It really does look nice. I wonder, to reduce weight, can you utilize or pack just the frying pan and forget about the main pot? Will it pack up with just the frying pan, the windshield, and the lid or cover? Thanks
Yes you can! There is the option of leaving the big or small pot at home. Also if you want to reduce weight and like titanium, please subscribe as shortly we will publish a video on a $50 alternative to the Swedish M40/PFM40 in titanium which is ultra-lightweight and is a stove with a can teen cup the same size as the PFM40 frying pan/cup (750ml). We think it's a great alternative in titanium.
Or you can just use some tent pegs to adapt it to your own lighter pot(s)😊
a little much . but better off with a u.s. g.i. canteen set .
That's good too, but sometimes for 2 people you need the big 1.5L pot for a stew.
@@fromtheflightdeck252 yes small group cooking and we keep one in the car for emergencies.
I do agree with the G.I. messing system. But in severe cold weather this Swedish system is bomb proof. Thats why I've got them. Light it up no fussing boil in the bag. Make a stew. Whatever your fancy.👌👍🇸🇪
@CalumMacNeil-qb6wp very true, perfect for motorcycle camping and I keep one in the car with emergency kit.
@@fromtheflightdeck252 sounds good
