A Better Magnetic Filter system // Maven Magnetic Filters

    It was time... my previous filter system had let me down for the last time... dropped filters, easily broken filters and Magnets that couldn't hold fast to a lens. These new Maven filters are not only built better, with better materials, but the magnets are strong and positive, color coded for ease of use, the same price once they go to retail... but they are independently owned... The color coded design makes these fast and easy to grab the filter you need. In my opinion they are a better filter in every way.

    Thanks for the recommendation and practical review. You’ve converted me to try magnetic filters. I’m using Lee original 100mm system which is great but over the years I’ve had a couple of niggles when I’m seascaping and rushing, also in rain when the droplets find their way down the slots and onto the back of the filter’s especially the front 105mm CP filter. Obviously the bulkiness of the Lee is annoying.
    So, I’ve backed this Kickstarter project for the Special full set. It didn’t give me the option to select the filter size though at this stage.

    I have Kase magentic filters, some circular and the Armour 100mm system. The magnets on the Armour system are much stronger than on the circular ones. I can even stack four filters, they won't go apart without stronge force. Additionally everything except the front inner circular filter can be additionally locked up. As there is no special cap for these filter system I use a 10x10 cm sheet of aluminium plate and put that into a magentic frame which works very well as protection when I don't want to detach the filters from the lens. I hope the magnets will not loose their strength over the years..

    I think the colour coding is a great idea as I have ended up colour coding the sections in my Kase pouch to easily know which filter is which. I haven't had my Kase filters as long as you Nick but had them for over a year and am always taking them on & off and not noted any weakening in the magnets. In fact I have to be careful in removing the lens cap or it flies off. I do think you were wrong though when you said the Kase filters were made of plastic not glass - I believe they are toughened optical glass. Anyway, always good to see new entrants into the market and will certainly watch with interest the long term performance but happy with my Kase set up so far.

    • @NickPage
      @NickPage  ปีที่แล้ว

      My magnets were not very strong to begin with, which gave them less wiggle room for losing magnetic strength. I probably lost 20% of its original string or so

    This is great, Nick! I have been using the KASE filters for a couple of years now. Learned about them from you. I love the magnetic circular filters. But I was frustrated by the lens caps easily falling off and the lack of magnetic hold if you stacked filters. Classic case. Standing in a stream to photograph a waterfall. Using the CP and and ND and while adjusting the tripod a bit. Oops. Fortunately the stream was shallow and nothing was broken. But it made me very skittish to use these filters in combination. I’m glad I caught this vid today! I jumped on the Kickstarter. Only problem was that I wasn’t able to get a step up adapter for my 70-200. I’ll need to wait on that I guess. I have two 82mm lenses that will always have the adapters on them as I assume these will work with lens hoods. Then I have a 77mm lens to which I will mount the step up ring and use the 82mm lenses. Things I really like. Stronger magnets (vs my current setup), the ability to rotate the CPL through the openings in my lens hoods, and the color coding. When I first got my Kase magnetic filters (almost three years ago now) my CPL was regularly falling off as I was moving the camera about. It survived unscathed, but I nearly lost it many times. Most annoying. But I did notice that subsequent filters I bought seemed to have strengthened the magnet as I'm no longer having that problem. I wonder, also, whether it has anything to do with how you store them stacked. I store mine unstacked in their small case, and have not noticed any degradation of the magnetic force over time - they are still nicely grippy. The colour coding is a nice idea, but storing them in the Kase case(!) I always know which filter is where. To be honest, I don't think I would want the grip to be any stronger as it would make getting them on or off more likely to move the camera. (I noticed for example, you had to try a little harder to get the Maven filter off the lens cap at 2:54 and a small edit - did you struggle to get it off and edit that out?) The Kase CPL is about as hard to rotate as I would want and I can't help but wonder whether the increased magnetic force on the Maven would make the CPL harder to rotate. It would be great to see their optical quality compared, though, as that is closer to the bottom line for me.

      I guess I should have touched on the fact that.. with my Kase filters.. for the most part I always traveled and stored my Kase filters in a pouch.. separated. Well, this had the unintended result of selling me on keeping my threaded filters. For one, I'm not a fan of package deals because I'd rather buy just the filters I'd use (polarizer and 3-stop is generally enough for me), but the big thing is the magnets. I'm glad this company has a lifetime warranty, but it's not something I really want to deal with. Sure, it can be a bit of.a faff to screw them on, but I've been using the same filters for several years with no problems and never have to worry about them just falling off.

      We are watching this and researching it closely. We have measured the magnetic forces of both brand new, ours are about 9 Newtons, and Kase is about 3 Newtons on the set we received. So we know brand new MAVENs are about 3x more magnetic, so even if we lose some strength over many years it may not be significant. All that said, LIFETIME WARRANTy if there are any issues. Best wishes!

    Great video as always.
    But the fading of the magnets is one of the issues I have in terms of longevity with stuff.
    I don't own any Kase-Filters or "high quality" ones. I am a hobbyist and the prices of filters is just way out of proportion for me.
    Adding Magnetic filterholder or anything else on top - that's the price of a complete lens with fast aperture.
    I don't like the filter-threads on my "middle priced" filters because they don't screw neatly into each other. The lens screwing is fine. They just don't interlock neatly so I have them in a small pouch.
    I always want to have better filters like the Kase back in the day or even square filters with a holder. But nope - I will pass on that based on what you have shown here. The Kickstarter is real great and all - but what about the quality in 5 years?

    You've had those Kase filters a few years now. It's likely a little erosion that's worn down the Kase coatings enough to weaken the magnetism. But when you put the adapter rings on, you can no longer use a lens hood. I've considered getting CPL's for all lenses at their correct size, and then just use the adapter rings when I want to use an ND, which is far less often. How do you handle using lens hoods? Do you just never shoot with a hood and a filter at the same time?

    I too have been thinking about magnetic filters or the Manfrotto option of adding magnetic rings to existing ones, but now learning that they lose strength over time puts me off. Shame, as at times a threaded polariser will stick onto a lens and is difficult to remove without a filter wrench.
