    We can always rely on Matt Brown to take us somewhere we've never been before. Great piece by Matt and Geoff and full marks to the Heathrow Express, the Aston Martin of London's railways.

    I took this both ways from and to Heathrow a decade ago. Actually was able to buy the ticket online before I left the US, which they recommended doing at the time. It is quite a long walk from the Heathrow terminal to the Express’s platform so I was very glad I had wheeled luggage. Nice smooth ride into London but not very scenic, as I recall. Saved a lot of money not taking a taxi, and time not sitting in traffic.

      @@ygryaznov Depends where in London you're going, when I go to Heathrow I'm coming from Liverpool Street and for that there's very little or no time difference between only tube or tube then express not at all worth the huge cost difference.

    maybe i'm just cheap but i don't see any reason to take the heathrow express when the piccadilly line works equally well, just with quite a bit more stops of course.. the express is over 20 quid for something i could pay just over 3 quid for.. to me the savings of 15 mins vs 45 mins isn't worth 6 times the cost.. it's still around so i guess some people don't like the "scenic" route or just don't mind being gouged lol :-)

    I used the Heathrow Express one way from Heathrow to Paddington in March for a Procol Harum gig. It was alright, a little bumpy though but they have screens on board showing latest news and stuff. My tip: buy a ticket 90 days in advance for the best deal, ticket terms are quite flexible too. Would use it again should the need arise.

      The Waterloo and City line has one driver who changes end at Waterloo and Bank, the Heathrow 4 shuttle has two drivers, one in each cab.

    • @Laurencepro99
      @Laurencepro99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes everyone knows. Also you are wrong Mister, the drive changes end at Bank! NOT Waterloo! The Waterloo and City Line has one stop, and one driver. The Heathrow Connect shuttle has 2 drivers and 2 stops. Do you even get it yet?

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rail.TrainMaster If it has one stop then it isn’t a line is it? It goes from Waterloo to Bank, with the driver changing ends at Bank, and at Waterloo the driver drives into the reversing siding, switches ends then drives into the outbound platform. Look at a tube map

    • @Laurencepro99
      @Laurencepro99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and? It's part of the tube network. If that isn't a line then explain the Colchester to Colchester Town Line on GEML.

    Why does it cost as much as a flight to Berlin or Paris?

      byblis persephone Tourist from New York who paid the £37(!) to and back, can confirm. (I was jet-lagged and didn't want to ride the entire subway to the friggin Docklands, okay!?)
      Getting to Manhattan quickly from JFK is much cheaper over here: $15 each way using AirTrain and the LIRR (From Jamaica to Penn), and if you're willing to use the subway, it's half that. And if you're trying to get from Newark Intl to Manhattan, it's $12.50.

      I think you will find that's for a book of tickets, but I agree with you that it's a rip off, for the time your on the train, I can go on 60mile round trip for a price of a oneway ticket and that's is on HS1 .....

      By December 2019, using a pool of 12 Class 387's GWR fleet. Hence fleet standisation and saves money building a new depot at Langley for the 332's. Existing depot at Old Oak Common will be gone by 2020 for HS2.

    Heathrow Express is a rip off! Only their trains run this route, and prices are over inflated and artificially high...nothing short of a monopoly...the tube is much cheaper

    • @andrewsebastianrothgarnant350
      @andrewsebastianrothgarnant350 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      There´s also Heathrow Connect services. They are cheaper but less frequent and have a longer journey time. But there´s a reason why Heathrow Express is "expensive". It´s intended for those who otherwise would´ve taken a cab, people who just want an easy and quick service with higher comfort than the tube.

      Go by train all the way to London where you're coming from or indeed where you're going to. Don't make it a 3 leg journey each way which includes the plane when you can do it in 1 or 2 legs anyway.

      Sort of. When I was in London I took the tube from Heathrow to my hotel, but for the way back I was running super late I knew I could get a cab to Padington and take the Heathrow Express to catch my plane. It cost less than having to book another transatlantic flight.

    • @mistervideosoex
      @mistervideosoex 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but the tube is longer. TfL also runs a local service on the TfL Rail going to 1, 2, 3, & 4. Heathrow express though goes to 1, 2, 3, & 5.
      Also, taking a taxi can be less busy by going to the pod parking (Access to Term 5 only)

    Most guards are trained to drive their trains if the driver becomes ill but this is for extreme incidents where urgent medical aid is needed - heart attacks however doesn't fall under that category

    One train exclusively for Heathrow airport only?

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's the Heathrow Express, which is expensive, but very fast, then there's Heathrow Connect (soon to join Crossrail) which is cheaper but slower, then there's the Piccadilly Line on the London Underground, which is much cheaper than the other two, but much slower

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bungle2010 No, the Heathrow Express most of the time is quicker, even if you have to wait an extra 15 mins, I imagine you could get anywhere in central London from Paddington within 30 mins as that’s the difference between waiting for and getting the HEX vs getting the Tube

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bungle2010 Central London isn’t huge. 30 mins from Paddington could probably get you to Essex or Buckinghamshire. And unless you were staying in Hounslow or Acton it would still be quicker to get the Express

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bungle2010 I’ve been there. It takes 24 minutes from Paddington to Liverpool Street. And I ask you, how long would it take to get to Liverpool Street via the Piccadilly line when leaving at 10:00 in the morning (from the platform) from Heathrow Terminal 5?

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rajat Kaulwin The fastest is definitely the Heathrow Express which takes around 20 minutes, but costs upwards of £20, whilst TfL rail is half the price but takes around 35 minutes, whilst the Underground can take around an hour but costs around £5

    i would say to Heathrow airport with Crossrail probably will end the Heathrow Express train so to keep their customers happy Heathrow need to find a way to get passengers from London to Heathrow faster so i think Heathrow Airport needs to have maglev technology so that will probably be London to Heathrow in 6 minutes
