    the press starts from the back. We need a strong leader at CB who is going to get that back 4 further up the pitch with urgency. At the moment we're lethargic at the back, we don't seem to have the confidence to leave space in behind. What I saw last game was Foden running his heart out trying to press whilst Stones is having a casual walk up the pitch 25 yards from our own goal

    Excellent off rhe ball analysis. Nice to see a proposed solution instead of just critiquing what you see.
    It is very worrying how poor the pressing plan was, what gives hope is how easy it is to fix it.
    Look forward to the on the ball analysis. It was a bit weird the way TAA and Rice stayed on the same line when we had the ball. I know they are a doubke pivot, but surely you want to add depth to the options inside, when you have the ball. Unless they were staying in position ready to defend?

    No1 said that Kane was playing to high and when fodan plays on the left for city, he has a left back bombing on, which opens up the play, which makes your point mute.

  • @barryispuzzled
    @barryispuzzled 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I don't they they are the main problems. No penetration down the left to supply Kane is bigger. Trent being an inexperienced midfielder is another. He doesn't retain the ball or win it back. His passing range is redundant because we're not hitting teams with runners on the break. I'd put Gordon on the left. I wouldn't shoehorn Foden into this side. I'd play Mainoo to get the ball off the back four and turn in tight spaces. Alternatively, if you're keeping Foden, give him freedom to roam.

  • @oscarjenkins7505
    @oscarjenkins7505 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Before even watching the video, I think there are three main problems:
    1. Trent is obviously not a midfielder. Any decent team exposes this. The question is whether him or Walker plays RB now and who replaces Trent in midfield? Hopefully Mainoo.
    2. Foden and Bellingham can’t both play. Southgate needs to choose between the two. I’d choose Bellingham, but I think there are arguments for both. Foden playing on the left is not working for many reasons, but mainly just leaving our left side completely empty, and therefore becoming too compact and predictable in the middle.
    3. Our press is awful. I don’t know if we are trying to press and failing, or if we are dropping off and positioning ourselves in the worst low block I’ve ever seen. Either way, it’s completely ineffective.
    I would comment on how we go SO defensive after going a goal up, but apparently we conceded the first goal in groups since 2016 against Denmark, so I think the concept is probably fine, especially in the group stage, we just aren’t executing is anywhere near well enough. Whatever the problems are though, people are certainly overreacting. We are comfortably at the top of our group currently, we will go through to knockouts, and we will likely go through as the top team in our group as well. It’s International football. It’s not gonna be pretty, but we shouldn’t care as long as we are getting the results, which we currently are. People calling for Southgate to get sacked when he’s sitting at the top of the group after playing TWO GAMES against difficult physical teams is pure madness.

      The problem isn’t the group stage results but we were getting results but looking like we had a plan people wouldn’t care. Brilliant analysis but you missed on thing: the Danes (and quite a few teams in Euro 2024), are lining up 3-4-1-2. This is why the high press isn’t working. You now have 2 or 3 attackers pressing as many as 7 in defence 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Still think even in this pressing shape you suggest (which i like), I think we need different profiles. i'd rather have rice pressing the pivot player then trent, and then wharton sitting deep to deal with the 10. You mentioned not being able to build as well, but i think stones, guehi, pickford should be fine as a platform to build from provided you have a press resistant pivot to play through like wharton or mainoo.
    After that, I think the next problem comes from chance creation, which is both a profile error and a tactical error. We probably could play foden on the left if we went for a posession heavy approach with a proper LB beside him, but since we are playing mostly on transition and have no shaw, just don't think he suits that role. Get Gordon out there. Then we need to fix set pieces, but this is much harder without Harry. Might just be a weakness of us this tourney.

    Do you think Southgate has the tactical capability, let alone will, to use this for a whole match? Then there's the question over his communication skills to relay and impart this to everyone in the team (see Kane's interview for admission that they didn't know what to do). I doubt that's in his makeup given we've seen minimal evolution in how we play under Southgate.
    I can't see the benefit of having Trent in the side, unless Walker and Trippier are injured, so that would be an easy change to make. Imagine experimenting in your first two group games of a major tournament instead of, I dunno, using meaningless qualification games and friendlies to do so!

    Your delivery is great young man, and if players were only allowed to move one a time and stayed where you put them having no self-determination like on your digital subbuteo pitch, I'm sure your system would work. Unfortunately, such close man-to-man marking only gives the opposition the opportunity to pull us out of shape, creating holes for them to exploit. Then you'd be criticising the team for having no shape and leaving holes for the opposition to play through. I just don't think it's as simple as you're saying. Great stuff though nonetheless!

    • @EuanByrom
      @EuanByrom 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      You do realise that man marking systems like the one AJ suggested are incredibly common and effective, especially when deployed from a midblock after certain pressing triggers are met, like AJ suggested? The point of an aggressive man to man trap sprung from pressing triggers while in a midblock is to quickly overwhelm the opponents from a shape that is originally hard to play through, which means that when sprung, its significantly harder to play through by dragging players out of position. On top of that, having that original mid block shape allows players to fall back into the shape if the press is unsucessful.
      These pressing and OOP systems are very common at club level, its very similair to what arsenal and man city do.

    • @AJAnalysis
      @AJAnalysis  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I see what you're saying, of course it isn't *that* simple, at the end of the day we're dealing with 22 humans on the pitch, things will always change
      However, this particular setup is extremely common at the top level at the moment, particularly in club football (most of these players operate in a similar system frequently) we've even seen it on occasion at this tournament as well.
      With regards to the holes it could potentially leave in the team, again you are right, however, that is the exact reason why I was suggesting this as a situational press using "triggers" rather than a constant.
      Believe me, I wish I could simulate these ideas with 22 players irl to make it clearer😅
