Hi,I can tell the both of you definitely enjoy yourselves, just cruising along the canal system, and going through many locks on your way, Totally care free,so awesome guys
Robbie your canal vlogs are some of the best on TH-cam. I think I’ve binge watched all of them now. 10 years ago I navigated from Thorne via Keadby down to Stockwith on the Trent on a 20ft Springer with a dodgy 10hp outboard motor: all in all a terrifying journey. Then down to Torksey and on to Kings Marina in Newark where I was stranded for two weeks because of flooding. Not put off, still want to live on a narrowboat, this time on a big one. Loving what you do! Looking forward to the next instalment!
Robbie, Yes get a factory cap and make sure the surface the rubber disc sits on is clean so it seals tight. Also replace the thermostat. If that engine cools by canal water you need to clean the intake strainer and make sure it isn’t blocked. There may be chunks of old impeller bits inside the mixer as well. It’s a bitch but you may have to flush the block. Days work but better than losing an engine!
Hi Robbie, we've pretty much binge watched all of your films now. Love what you do. Informative and entertaining! Great stuff, especially Pub of the Week.
Eh up! Great video. Lou and Maeve looking confident on the boat now, especially with those amazing swing bridges. Hope you get the water cooler fixed. Sheffield awaits you offering a warm welcome!
The little disk in the middle of the cap is what lets the water return. Your problem is somewhere else maybe the thermostat. Put something in radiator that inhibits rust, it is your engine's enemy.
Nice little trip Robbie . If you have any trouble with a radiator cap it should be replaced immediately , it can also not be building up enough pressure to work properly and also the thermostat may be suspect too . Good luck with the rest of the moving trip :-)
Robbie Cumming i love the stainforth and keadby canal, it was the first canal we went on after our river trent journey from torksey on first boat, my second boat I bought in Thorne and took to goole then Selby.
came to your vids after seeing the BBC4 series and wondering if you have covered this area too. Live locally and have only cycled along here having discovered it existence from the Scunthorpe Doncaster train ride. Even keen railway local buffs were not not aware of the slinging bridge. very brave of you to attempt the Keadby lock down from Torsky Impressed with the quality of your productions and the excellent local knowledge of your places visited, hope future BBC series will cover some of the places from the excellent Collins Notts,York area? not a boater but from always fascinated from a young age by the canal infrastructure and craft.
Eh up Robbie, I have watched hours of footage you have produced and enjoyed every minute and moment, but I loved this one , I was born in Keadby and loved to see how much it has changed over the years and believe me it has changed , the slide bridge where the railway is moved has been there a long time , I used to ride my push bike down the old railway line and over that bridge to deliver papers to Dolly ( can't remember last name , it was 1970s) at the swing bridge I remember as a lad Dolly used to open and close bridge for boaters , barges etc , and we used to fish the canal there a lot from Keadby to Kirk Bramith wides , great to see the old stomping ground and how it has changed ,!! thankyou for your vlogs I love them .
Thanks for the better video of the railroad bridge in action, that thing is cool! As for the radiator cap, if you can monitor the tank level it should be easy to figure out. Check the tank level as part of your starting off checks and note the level, photograph it if you can so you are sure, after cruising for a while check the level again and it should have gone up, after you moor up for the day let the engine cool until it is cool to the touch, at that point the tank level should be back to where it was when you started cold. If the overflow tank is not working as it should, it is likely the cap, but check the hose to the overflow tank and all the connections on it for leaks, if the tube going to the overflow tank goes into the top of the tank it should have a suction tube that goes below the water level, check that tube for cracks and leaks as well. If the overflow tube goes to the bottom of the tank check that there isn't sediment in the bottom of the tank blocking the tube. If the tube checks out good try replacing the cap, they are inexpensive enough. I have seen factory pressure caps go to the junk yard still working fine on 25 year old cars, and I have seen two month old caps fail. Honestly if the last time the cooling system was flushed was over three years ago or is not known a good cooling system flush couldn't hurt. Good luck.
Robbie, have you noticed? Some of your best work is with Lou. It’s nice to have a sounding board to your monologue. Someone who reacts appropriately, each time giving you a flash of smile. Not to mention running to swing open a bridge so you can breeze through. These were some of the nicest canals with room to swing several cats at once (Do they say that in England?).
I know this is over a year after the fact BUT if anyone is looking now, a proper coolant system cap keeps the system pressurized which allows the coolant to remain liquid above boiling temp. Fun fact; inversely if you place water in a vacuum chamber it will boil off without the application of heat.
Hi Robbi No doubt that you have corrected the radiation cap? But a tip to test the cap and if its function Is working put cap in a glass jug (pyrex) And pour boiling water into the jug and watch the cap and see if it moves slowly If it moves on the spring it's ok if it doesn't U need a new one. Take care and stay safe John. S.
Possibly the coolest swing bridge. I would have just gone through it repeatedly all day marvelling how its made, while ignoring the angry controller person.
Hiya mate, love your blogs , just had a flash back to my child days(a very long time ago lol) We where on our holidays in our old bedford van. It kept overheating (like your friends nb) after trying different things I remember my dad saying it was all caused by having the wrong radiator filling cap , hope that is of help for you , keep cranking it
#Eyup Nah then ! Glad to see you wearing Yorkshire headwear on your journey through tha Lincolnshire/ Yorkshire canal. Tha lock at Bramwith is 2 locks within one, the large section for multiple craft and the small one for 2 narrowboats or single craft.Keep on with the brilliant Vlogging It's good to see the trust is " Making life better by water"
Good one Robbie, really enjoyable. You look to be in great spirits, despite the long day. Heard of, but never seen this stretch of canal before. Hey, you mentioned the girls. They need a hand, teach them to go through locks quicker (grin). Also a bit of news from this way. Now, you must remember seeing my friend Steve's boat at Chapel. Well 2 or 3 weeks ago he was moored at 'cow pat' that's on the bank downstream of Chapel. You may have noticed it on your trip. 2 gin palaces when past at full speed. Not only crashing his boat into the bank, but broke his steering. Luckily he told me it was an easy fix as it's cable. Tried to video them on his phone, but never having done it didn't press record. He said he knows the boats though, just didn't get the evidence. Look forward to more.....have fun 😁
Ey up mi ducks👍...just take the brass collar off complete with the spring remove the bottom rubber but leave the rubber seal on just underneath the cap then replace it.... did this two years ago with no further problems👍
Nice one Robbie.. erm.. swing bridges only problem with some of them they always seem to have the mooring on the wrong side.. That sliding rail bridge always fascinates me don't know about the Yorkshire tea but that plate off food looked bloody marvellous. Look forward to the next one and hope things are ok with you. Take care mate...
The swing bridge as you came into Thorne is always open ... it was the main crossing point coming from Stainforth/Hatfield until the flyover was built in the late 60's / early 70's. Between this bridge and the lock was the site of Richard Dunston Shipbuilders - now housing - they built tugs and small fishing ships which once launched (sideways into the canal!) were taken, via the canal/Keadby/Humber to be finished at the yard in Hessle. Spent many an hour in school holidays help to open/close the lock and swing bridge - all manual in those days!
Great local info there, love it. Although I have to mention the bridge is often closed - if you saw the other video I made about Thorne you’ll see the Swing bridge is closed - was actually frozen shut as it turned out! I lived there for about 6 weeks last November and crossed it on foot many times during my stay. 8^)
Promise we're not really stalking you, Robbie, but just came back on Friday from taking granddaughter home to Sheffield! Great to see the route we took without the thick green cushion of duckweed we had to plough through. Did you encounter the oil ship?Great video and we love the sliding railway bridge too. ps we just used the top section of Branwith Lock, didn't need to fill the full length.
Oh no! Weed is not my friend - you’ll see in the next few videos about the Chesterfield! I met the Exol Pride last year so yes! Lovely to hear from you! 8^)
there are 2 valves on a rad cap . the large rubber allows water under pressure to go to the expansion tank. the brass valve in the centre allows water to return to the radiator from the expansion tank when the pressure in the rad reduces due to cooling
Hi Rob, As a long time Gongoozler, my attention was attracted to the early clip of the Chandlers price list..........Hand Cuff Key 🤔🤔..Do you tend to use these when you get back from the pub ?........explain please 😀👍. Cheers. Nigel
Great Videos Robbie. just like to point out that Bramwith Lock does not need to be used as a staircase lock for small crafts / narrowboats. I have been through loads of times.
You can get different water caps they have different pressures. You will need to look up the correct pressure cap for your engine. You may need to know the engine make and number to get it spot on!
Regarding your pressure relief caps I found this explanation on google: What is the main purpose of the radiator cap? As the vacuum builds in the cooling system, the second function of the two-way check valve comes into play. At a predetermined vacuum, the radiator cap allows coolant to be sucked from the reservoir back into the engine. If there is sufficient coolant in the reservoir, no air gets into the engine. So by the sounds of it you just need a new cap because it should not leak at all under any circumstances.
In the center of the cap should be a separate valve to let the water back into the cooling system. as it cools the psi becomes less in the cooling system to draw water(coolant) back in from the overflow. This is all dependent on a good seal on the cap.
My son left his key in the lock box when going through Thorne lock, he did the swing bridge and forgot to get his key back, lovely man from staniland retrieved it for him and we had to get a mate to collect it, we were at the next lock when we found out lol.
Robbie Cumming we were very lucky to have a mate who could go and pick it up and meet us at the lock further up, would have walked if need be... well my son would have lol, love the vids, when you up Selby way again, I gotta buy you a beer.
There is another little valve in the center of the cap.. that let's the water back.. you can see it in the video. . Give it a pull with you fingers. . Might just be overheating a bit.. check the seal on the cap up inside where it clips on.. if that seal is damaged any expanding water will leak out round the cap instead of going down the expansion pipe
Boater definitely, although I get bored and have to film things so it’s great to do something with all my random clips. The vlogging has also allowed me to meet with lots more people than I would normally 8^)
Bored 😨😨😨 Lots of things to do beside filming. After 40 years of non boring boating we started our own channel but it will never be our priority because we enjoy so much more. Could never continually cruise either, perhaps that is why we still have a boat and find it all so enjoyable. On average a CC leaves the canals within 5 years and most never return. Very nice videos👍🍺
The coolant cap has a valve in the middle of that bit your pushing you should be able to put the small brass part that let's the water back into the cooling system
Hi Greg. Great point, you’re not wrong. You can aslo keep them attached to a key chain. Which is what I did in this video. Because they aren’t Lou’s keys. They’re mine!
The coolant set up. With cap like that excess water under sufficient pressure to overcome the cap spring pressure will exit via the cap (unless the seal in the top of the cap is spectacularly good and the reservoir is not pressurised in any way). Once it is past the seal I see no mechanism by which the water would be forced into the header tank. Nor does water in the header tank have any way to return to the engine past the radiator cap seal. In fact it would just drain out of the top of the cap which has minimal sealing. There does seem to be a small hole In the sealed part that may be supposed to handle this. Three possibilities occur to me. One is that the overflow spigot is intended to simply over flow to below the engine as in many older vehicles and you need a collection tank low down beside the engine (without the possibility of reversing the flow). The second is that is that a specific type of radiator cap the allows flow in both directions is required. Third and by far the most likely. The header tank and/or it's plumbing is blocked up so that surplus water/pressure can not escape that way. Check and clean as needed. In the interim, and post any fix, keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Overheating can kill an engine stone dead in a permanent fashion.
Robbie get those engine tappets adjusted mate you will damage the valves it will all so make the engine run better and much quieter I’m a diesel mechanic and you should do this ASAP
I had this on my boat....I changed the cap...same problem....turns out there was an air lock....to solve it was to run the engine REALLY hard for a few seconds.....fixed. (sorry I haven't time to read the other suggestions and this may have been suggested before) argggggggghhhhhhhhh meant to post on the last vid..... I am such a twot.
The problem you are having is the rad cap. You need a new rad cap the seal is failed. What is happening is the water heats up expands and get pushed out the small pip to the reservoir tank then when it cools it pulls the water back into the system. if there is a crack in the rubber seal on the rad cap it push the water out the pipe and the top of the rad and then when it cools it sucks in air. Then when you go to start the ENG again when it cold there is low water in the system and the water pump stops working as it pulling air from the top of the rad When you check a cold rad the water should be at the top. in the other video it was not at the top. As for the spring part of the rad that is for over heating steam and should not be messed with. Hope this helps. I had the same problem with a car, in the middle of winter. It was -20C and the car was over heating and no heat from the vents or the rad. (You just have to love living in Canada and the cold or be nuts) Look a
Hi John, Lou has her own channel now if you search for ‘Maeve n me’ - but yeah this dog is actually a ‘lurcher’ very good natured although did not enjoy the journey very much!!
I actually got that wrong I think it was something like a 14 hour day but that included the travelling at both ends of the day. I think it was 15 miles (as mentioned in the video) in about 8 hours. How's that.
The cap should block the overflow pipe until the temperature rises to a point where the expanding coolant is allowed to escape when the pressure rises to a point where the spring loaded seal in the cap is lifted. When cold the radiator should NOT be filled to the top of the filler neck but slightly lower to allow for expansion. The spring loaded cap allows the boiling point of the coolant to rise above 100 C without boiling off.
Wow Lou makes you some good looking lunch there! Hope it tasted as good as it looked... A little bit of salt on those eggs would of been good for me. That's bc I'm a cheep date... lol... Yes she takes good care of you.. hehehehe!! I'm a really cheep date @ the pubs. Bc I don't drink. I'll have a Dr. Pepper though. Then I'm happy go lucky. But I'll also have some fish & fries with that DP PLEASE! That would cost you the price of a beer on tap & have change in ya pocket. I don't know bc I haven't had a beer on tap since 1993. They use to be $1.50 USD & that was high $$$ back then. I think it was $3.00 for a pitcher & $1.00 shots witch butter nipples was my shoots back then with Bush light. I drank lite back in the day bc I only weighted only 97 lbs to 103 lbs in 1991 when I had my 2nd child in 1992. I was little. But don't worry I've put on a little weight since then. 26 yrs later I weight 177 lbs & in 2 mos I lost 30 lbs by giving up soda & only drinking tea now. All bc a test result came back as a fatty liver so I went from 196 to 177 lbs in 2 weeks. I'm so happy. My legs are not swelling anymore & I'm felling really good here lately. Yeah!! So I might get to get rid of my Metformin bc of a high sugar levels. Then that's one more pill I call help save my liver. Wish my luck, bc I need all the wishes & prayers I can get. Keep CRANKING on & be safe, Chris
I think 🤔 you should get a mechanic to do them should take 1hr. Labour if I lived in London again I would do them on your boat and Louise for a couple of pints 🍺 have fun colin commander yes yes that’s my name ,,,,,,,,
Colin I’d love to but I can’t help thinking you wouldn’t be able to adjust the volume if that’s what’s bothering you. I have already had the valve adjustments seen to - they were fine by the way - by a Lister specialist. I saw it all and even filmed it - yet to be released. It must have been my fault with the microphone too close to the engine so you presumed the volume was greater than it actually is.
Swallows on the wing drinking from the canal - beautiful!
One of my favourite sights 😍
Hi,I can tell the both of you definitely enjoy yourselves, just cruising along the canal system, and going through many locks on your way,

Hi Robbi
No doubt that you have corrected the radiation cap?
But a tip to test the cap and if its function
Is working put cap in a glass jug (pyrex)
And pour boiling water into the jug and watch the cap and see if it moves slowly
If it moves on the spring it's ok if it doesn't U need a new one.
Take care and stay safe

Nigel you dirty digger! Did you watch the last video about the staircase treble locks on the Chesterfield? I used one there (and no pub in sight!) 8^)
Great Videos Robbie. just like to point out that Bramwith Lock does not need to be used as a staircase lock for small crafts / narrowboats. I have been through loads of times.
Ok. I think the water levels were different for us - maybe because of the drought?

Love the pronunciation of Stainforth- very proper! I'm more used to the local "stainfuth" or simple "stainy"
Ah yep well I would say it helps when I’m correcting the auto generated subtitles but on there it always comes out as ‘stained fork’ canal ha ha!! 8^)
Hi Robbie great vids you should try the New Inn in Stainforth on the canal great food and ales my village local

.There is a bridge like that at the north entrance to Lough derg on The Shannon at a town called portumna it’s a road bridge.Check it out.
Robbie, how long will narrow boats be the major part of your life. You are a talented person, where is this leading you?
I’m kind of married to them now aren’t I! But I’ll just go with the flow! Whatever feels right.
My son left his key in the lock box when going through Thorne lock, he did the swing bridge and forgot to get his key back, lovely man from staniland retrieved it for him and we had to get a mate to collect it, we were at the next lock when we found out lol.
He he I’ve done that! Had to walk about 2 miles back to get it!! 8^)
Robbie Cumming we were very lucky to have a mate who could go and pick it up and meet us at the lock further up, would have walked if need be... well my son would have lol, love the vids, when you up Selby way again, I gotta buy you a beer.
For the engine the is a purson caled steave with a copany called north east south west
Charming as always.I'd like to ask you if you think it is being a boater per se or being a vlogger that you enjoy most???
Boater definitely, although I get bored and have to film things so it’s great to do something with all my random clips. The vlogging has also allowed me to meet with lots more people than I would normally 8^)
Bored 😨😨😨 Lots of things to do beside filming. After 40 years of non boring boating we started our own channel but it will never be our priority because we enjoy so much more. Could never continually cruise either, perhaps that is why we still have a boat and find it all so enjoyable.
On average a CC leaves the canals within 5 years and most never return.
Very nice videos👍🍺
i think you are right, it's not the right cap. it should have a rubber seal around the top, as well as around the sprung bit.
The coolant cap has a valve in the middle of that bit your pushing you should be able to put the small brass part that let's the water back into the cooling system
Hi mate u ok love the video as always
Hey bud yes am really well, just cruisin around! Thanks for watching! 8^)
The CRT sells Handcuff keys and Spikes? I'm not sure I'm old enough to be on the canal.
Always hold the top with heavy glove or cloth in case there is still pressure in the system and you get scalded.
And I thought Tim and Pru were famous LOL Hope all is well regards Hayden p s When I stand at top of our rode, thah can nearly see yu Lol
Another great Video. Are you still planing to come over to Hamburg?
Thank you! Yes! - Although that is for my friend Jamie’s 40th birthday so I will not be there for long 8^(
If you like to meet up just give me a quick message.
Will try! Would be great to have a local guide for the reeperbahn!!!
If that lunch is any measure of how she feeds you, she could probably find a dozen others to crew her boat. That looked proper.
Yes I can heartily recommend Lou’s lunches!! Hmmm is that a business idea?! 8^)
A key ring on a boat, without a float on it, is a disaster waiting to happen. Lou, get a float on those keys!
Thanks John great to hear from you! 8^)
Robbie get those engine tappets adjusted mate you will damage the valves it will all so make the engine run better and much quieter I’m a diesel mechanic and you should do this ASAP
Colin are you talking about Lou’s boat or mine?
Air lock in the skin tank?
I had this on my boat....I changed the cap...same problem....turns out there was an air lock....to solve it was to run the engine REALLY hard for a few seconds.....fixed. (sorry I haven't time to read the other suggestions and this may have been suggested before) argggggggghhhhhhhhh meant to post on the last vid..... I am such a twot.
No worries mate thanks anyway! 8^)
That low-pitched guitar in one of the songs… was it a dropped tuning, an actual bass guitar, or run through a processor? 👍🏼
Which song
Starts at 7:22.
Hm, I watched this vlog directly after the one where you show your kitchen skill. It looks like Lou make more tasty food?
Hope that's helpful !
I guess you don't have a bow thruster , how come ?
Keep Cranking It :-)
I don’t know some boats have them mine maybe too old? Don’t need one anyway!
North East of England... Methinks your lost Robbie!
Well Tony Wrigglesworth... MEthinks you're a pedant of the highest order!! 8^)
Good reply!!!!! Keep the vids Cumming!
Ha ha cheers Tony and sorry it all seems North East for a Dorset lad like myself!
Then when you go to start the ENG again when it cold there is low water in the system and the water pump stops working as it pulling air from the top of the rad
When you check a cold rad the water should be at the top. in the other video it was not at the top. As for the spring part of the rad that is for over heating steam and should not be messed with.
Hope this helps. I had the same problem with a car, in the middle of winter. It was -20C and the car was over heating and no heat from the vents or the rad. (You just have to love living in Canada and the cold or be nuts)
Look a
mmmmm Lou is fit :)
Lou is your dog a grey hound I only have one I used to have three they reach there age i was heart broken and still is
Hi John, Lou has her own channel now if you search for ‘Maeve n me’ - but yeah this dog is actually a ‘lurcher’ very good natured although did not enjoy the journey very much!!
The question would be, which urinal did you stand at, or did you go outside and find a secluded bush......LOL
Ditch the cap and put a green can over the opening. Youre welcome.
Ha ha of course! Why didn’t I think of that!!
not to be critical but you probably need to drain the cooling system and put new coolant in.
You’re right! There most certainly wasn’t enough coolant in anyway!!
How far did you travel in ten hours ?
I actually got that wrong I think it was something like a 14 hour day but that included the travelling at both ends of the day. I think it was 15 miles (as mentioned in the video) in about 8 hours. How's that.
love your vlogs but wish you would number each one I seem to be watching them out of sequence
Lou you are a fantastic laidy love your tatoos Usa Atlanta Georgia
How come you didn't let Lou wave G'bye ?
Oh, the tight cap problem.. i once had radiator blown because of that. (don't ask me, i fixed it by spending my money on a man)
Do not use this as a personal hygiene product lol!!
totally the wrong cap type I reckon - blocking the overflow pipe, or maybe the wrong cap pressure relief rating for the engine.
Yeah.... looks like the wrong cap...
Yours mate it’s very noisy every engine should have tappets adjusted you need screwdriver 10 mm ring spanner’s or 7/16th and feller gages
"The north east" ha ha no it's not!
Ah dammit ok you’re right! Glad you got a laugh though! 8^)
Robbie Cumming live just outside Durham the real North East 😉
Ah yes like my friend Phil (of ‘Narrowboat Helen’ TH-cam channel)
Robbie Cumming ay think he's from Bishop Auckland way
Wow Lou makes you some good looking lunch there!
Keep CRANKING on & be safe,
Chris
Good luck Chris, livers are so important, hope you can get yours back to full health. 8^}
Your camera makes Diesel engines sound brutal ;)
