We are going to visit as a potential retirement spot, along with Antigua and Xela. We really are not sure what town to stay in yet….maybe San Marco ? The groovy hippie vibe sounds like where I grew up as a kid on Siesta Key, Florida, back in the 70s.

Yes, definitely an amazing retirement spot. I would retire there for sure! I think it is a very difficult choice because all of them have pluses and minuses. I think in ideal scenario you stay in each town for a few days to really see if you like it and it has all you need because at the end of the day it will come down to where you feel most comfortable. For convenience I think Panajachel will be the top choice - because it has banks, different shops, easy to travel from. San Marcos was nice, very hippie vibes. But I think my favourite spot purely from where I would buy a house and retire is Santa Cruz. It is very small so could be too small for some, but I know I would love it there. But would need to be house by the lake, so you actually have an exit to it directly. Probably for me personally the most beautiful place purely from a point of view where I would want to live, not travel. Also, close to Panajachel, so quite convenient. Ahhh how exciting, I want to retire too hahahah

      Thank you so much !
I guess we will stay in Antigua for two months, Lake Atitlan for two months and Xela for two months. That way we can stay a couple weeks in different areas of the Lake. That will probably be May and June of 2024.
We are currently in my wife’s home country of Nicaragua, living in the mountains of Matagalpa.

Where do you think I’ll find the best wifi? Thinking of going back but I need strong wifi during my stay

I think Panajachel is quite good as being 'the main' town. Also, if you booking any nice hotel around the lake, just check if they have a generator.

Did locals warn you of the dangers of drowning in that lake?
