I know you said you’ve been impressed, but has Darnell Wright’s performance so far in comparison to other 1st round tackles in the past changed your projections for him as a player?

Howell will continue to grow, I think he will speed up that processor as he gains more experience, he said in a press conference himself that he needs to find more completions and if its not there incompleteness. I love his mindset to grow, and his floor is pretty solid too. Great eval marcus

I am excited about a Commanders game getting its own video.
In terms of the Bears: Justin Fields was effective, but it will be difficult to replicate these results, but the results were odd. I think one one WR, DJ Moore had a catch and two TE's, so only three players caught balls from him. He also missed some big plays downfield. I think the Commander's DC Del Rio had a bad game plan. While we talk about the Commanders running a Fangio style defense. They have gone away from taht a bit the last two weeks. We running a lot of man coverage right now. Presumably its because he wants the safeties to help against the run (the Eagles have the best run game in the NFL and the Bears have Justin Fields). But yeah we think of the Commanders as running a two high cover match system and that is not really true the last two weeks.
I thought the Bears secondary did reasonably well considering the injuries. At one point they were briefly down four corners, Johnson, Gordon, Stevenson, and Stroman. They played conservative coverages for the most part while being what aggression they did use by bring extra pass rushers. It actually created a decent bend but don't break defense. They did give up a lot of passing yards, but not a lot of points and given how many DB's they were (the four corners, plus Eddie Jackson), that was probably a win for them. But I would bet their fans did not like the cushion and underneath passes they were giving up.
From the Commanders standpoint, I think Logan Paulsen's weekly recaps are pretty good. He made the point that overall, the D-Line played pretty well. Sweat, Young, and Payne had good games. Jonathan Allen missed the second half of training camp with plantar fasciitis and he doesn't look like his old self yet. But when the D-Line didn't win, it allowed big plays because the secondary played poorly. That said if you are only going to bring four, you cannot expect the D-Line to always win because Chicago at times was only sending three men out and keeping 7 into block. On one of the early long TD's they did exactly that. Every single D-Lineman except Allen was double team. That said we had 7 in coverage against 3 receivers. The secondary has to do better. So I think Marcus criticism of the Commanders D-Line is not warranted. They may have been overrated a bit by the media, which included some who said they were the best D-Line in the NFL, but if you just focus on them, you would say they played fairly well against Chicago.
One thing from the Commander perspective that Marcus didn't mention was the the Commanders set the record for most consecutive dropback passes in the PFF era according to PFF. On 55 consecutive plays, Bieniemy called drop back passes. Now Howell ended up scrambling on a few of them, so the stats will show some run plays, but they were not designed runs. My instinct is that makes the Commanders too predictably. And admittedly the game script definitely influenced that.
I am still a Forbes fan, but the last three weeks have been rough for him. He is too hungry for picks. And he is given up 3 or 4 long TD's this year on plays he was trying to jump or get a pick starting with the hail mary against Denver where he was the first to get his hands on it but rather than knock it down he tried to catch it but just deflected it into the air. Then against Philly he got beat on some double moves and they against Chicago he went for the breakup/interception and didn't get it on one of Moore long catches. I think everybody called him a ball hawk/interception machine and he took it too seriously. He just needs to play more fundamentally sound and understand that interceptions won't consistently happen. Sometimes they will, but sometimes they won't. His main priority has to be playing fundamentally sound football.

As someone who tends to over-think, I think Fields needs to reset the part of his mind that _reacts_ to the environment around him. Matt Nagy refused to allow him to take practice with the team before being forced to put him into a game, & based on what people who have witnessed the coaches with Fields in practice, this group isn't actually much better: they also make decisions without consulting him (key word coming up here) _before_ making them.
It's a top-down structure that doesn't work with everyone or FOR everyone. If Chase Claypool was really this bad to have on the team then Why Didn't The Coaches Talk to Claypool &/or then the team _about_ him? Because if you're the authority figures in the room & forget to act with authority on A, guess what? It makes it more difficult to get them to listen to you on B, C & D.
Now _ON_ the field, the failures of receivers to run the proper assignments extends past Claypool. We saw both Scott & Kmet screw up in the preseason. But I think for Fields, while his reacts are All Reasonable under the circumstances, he has to Put It Behind himself because he is _still_ playing terribly. Even on the passes to Moore He Is Late. He's late on _all_ passes.
He's still playing like someone who is trying to balance out the doubts as to whether he "should" pass or not. The best thing anyone can do for him now is make him watch footage of C.J. Stroud's anticipation throws. I think if he *sees what it looks like* when one does that without throwing INTs then this can reset his doubts & his playing because he is still missing opportunities & basics. He can't connect on short outside throws like sail routes & Moore doesn't get merely 'open,' he gets Wide Open. & if those are the only plays Fields connects on, well guess what? He'll get replaced.
*_Every_** QB in the league* can connect on Wide Open receivers.
He needs to clear his mind of any lingering doubts he has about This Team & These Receivers & just play, & I don't think he's done that yet.

Believe the record for Sacks taken in a season is still 76 by David Carr for the Texans in their first year and honestly with this offensive line in Washington plus Howell holding the ball too long he will reset the record.

A concern I have about the bears is I feel like Tyrique Stevenson’s play strength isn’t there yet. He looks like he’s really using all his strength to tackle people and they get a yard or 2 after he grabs them where as Terrell smith wraps guys up and they go down. I’m not sure if you have noticed this as well.

Yeah this defense is the problem, there absolutely no creativity on defnese, the blitz packages are bad. There’s no stunts or anything to mix up the pass rush. Commanders play a lot of match zone which often converts to man coverage and the DB’s get cooked. And when it’s not the defense is miscommunicating in zone or the linebackers don’t have the instincts to cover in the short to intermediate.

I don’t want to be too optimistic about my Bears, but we have two very winnable games against the Vikings and Raiders coming up. If we can get to 3-4, it’s a whole new season.
