I get teary eyed seeing this footage. Saratoga is not just where I grew up but like a part of my heart. When they tore everything down & commercialized it, it literally broke my heart. I moved away for a few years because I was so devastated. Thank you for sharing this video with us. It helps to remind me what home used to be. ♡
I'm so happy this video is still up, please never take it down. I grew up in Saratoga and went thru a nasty divorce during the blizzard. These are my last images of Saratoga before I moved away.
oh I miss this, the way Saratoga used to be when I was a lot younger(I was born at the Saratoga Springs Hosptial on July 13, 1982) I am now liveing in the Malta area on Ny but I go threw Downtown almost every day=)
Thanks for posting this! I am born and raised in Saratoga Springs, and moved to Florida at 21. I am now 37! ugh, anyway, I love seeing the old woolworths sign and the snow covered Broadway! What memories this video brought back! Please post any other Saratoga Videos from yester-year that you might have! I'd love to see them. Got Anything from the old Pyramid mall?? lol
before pope's pizza, it was Red Barn Burger. Borders books and music is there now. Wow, I remember this storm like it was yesterday! We ran out of places to put the snow! Thanks for the video.
I grew up there in the 1960's. Right next to Woolworth's back then was Daw's Drugs. Next to that was the grocery store "Grand Union". The tall building at around :50 was the old "Rip Van Dam" Hotel. I also remember "The Central Market", "Duvall's News", The old A&P (next to Globe Supply), the newer A&P with the "Red Barn" restaurant. And plenty more. I actually lived in Greenfield, very close to the Scott Cemetery. Lived there from 1962-1969 & Saratoga Lake from 69-72. Oddly enough, The Grand Union grocery was built on the old "Grand Union" hotel area but that was apparently just coincidence as the two businesses had no connection with each other. Oh. Also pretty cool was the old "Stewart's Ice cream" building.
Hard to believe that is what Saratoga used to look like, very quaint, gives you that warm feeling inside. I relocated to Ballston Spa 4 years ago from the Newburgh area, wish I did it in the early 90's. Still I dont think I could find a better place to raise my family.
The Great Blizzard of 1993, Its hard to believe that's its been 20 years since the Northeast was crippled by this storm!!!! And ironically 20 years later, the Northeast was crippled again by another blizzard, although this time only a small portion of the East Coast was affected. It was a week before I turned one when the storm hit, luckily there was no reports of power outages in Downtown Troy
aww I miss how everything was back in 93. I was 10, lucky enough to remember times before all these clusters of buildings got put up. I miss home, but I'm so glad I don't have to deal with snow anymore, or the high costs. Who remembers Broadway Betty?!

Amazing! I was 6 when this was filmed. I loved to go to the Woolworths back then. Such a great place to grow up (before the snooty richie rich people took over).
I was born and raised in Saratoga. Good memories before the destruction of what was a beautiful, unique city. I am 50+ years old and it breaks my heart to see the phony facades and ugly condos. The good families and people have moved out,as have I.
Woolworth's demise might have been a positive thing, since it had replaced a grand old hotel. Though Saratoga was a more subdued city in 1993, it has a positive feel to it in 2010. Thank you for this cool video, though! Reminds me of a memorable weekend, and I was in Rochester, NY at that time!

I so agree. I grew up here in the 70's and 80's, before it really went commercial. Can't even recognize parts of it now. So sad.
I used to buy Garbage Pail Kids, MadBalls, and NES games from that store. Great memories from 35 years ago.
This is so surreal on so many levels. The buildings (or lack thereof), the music, the atmosphere, the weather. Wild.

This boggles my mind that this was 19 years ago, I remember it so well!! I miss Woolworth's and the little diner inside :) wonderful memories...

Agreed
Man downtown has changed so much since '93.. I remember the blizzard, I was 12 years old. it was awesome.
This was what Saratoga looked like before the tourists started moving here to stay. Now there are condos everywhere, and the roads are STILL shit!

I was born in Saratoga Springs and grew up in Ballston Spa. I moved away at age 11 in 1984. Did you go to Milton Terrace Elementary school?

When I was 16, the Red Barn was my first job.
My Mother used to send me there to pick up prescriptions. She refused to call it Rite aide and always called it "Daws".
Who is here after the blizzard of 2020 4ft of snow

Is the Sugar Shack coffee shop still in Ballston Spa? I haven't been there since the 70s.

Yea it was a great broadway half of the stores were empty and the rent was cheap because everyone shopped at the pyramid mall. We forget that.
Loved the Pyramid Mall! Used to work at Shatz Stationery for a bit.
