@pnw_r6 it doesn't have to cost a fortune to meet standards. My helmet meet 22.06 ECE/ Dot standards only cost me 139.00....most helmet manufacturers making you pay for their brand name.
Proper gear is one of the underappreciated elements of riding imo… It feels great when you find a piece of gear that viably improves your riding experience… just gotta take your time and find the right gear for your needs, and at the right price/on sale, etc…
I actually study motorcycle culture pre 1930s! Would love to mention that a lot of people felt helmets were illegitimate, that's why it took so long to make it commonplace. Even during the boardtrack racing craze where land speeds records were broken almost every weekend, they only wore football helmets of the time which were just leather with stuffing.
@raphaelcaceres9129 Basically. Esquestrian was also a hgue part in shaping early gear like Yammie mentioned. However helmets were already commonplace for horseback riding at that time. They mainly adopted the boots and breeks as the stance and sitting position was not much different from horseback riding for the early bikes.
9:28 I like the way motoairbag v4 does their airbag. It's a tether, yes, but it's not activated by how FAR you pull, but by how QUICK you pull, thus allowing you the ability to still stand up and move around if you need to but still deploys before you've even left the bike if hit by a car
I've been riding since the mid 70's and have been fortunate enough to survive a couple of crashes that probably should have killed me, but even the gear I was wearing on a particular night in the mid 80's is something that I attribute to saving my life . . . A café racer style jacket with a high enough collar on my neck kept my jugular vane from getting demolished by a rock wall that I skimmed across the top of. The scar on that jacket proved to me that it saved my life. So . . . I'm living proof that gear is important, and thrilled to know I'm living in the future. Still not an ATGATT guy, but I NEVER throw a leg over without a helmet, and motorcycle specific jacket at the very least.
It was fun to explain this evolution to my grandma. When I was buying a helmet and basic equipment such as protectors, boots and gloves. She was saying that I am not doing this in correct order as I should have a moto first. She was a rider back in the 70s but here, the motorcycles were basically bikes with engines (she had a WSK 125 which barely produced 7hp and 9Nm of torque, where we are passing our licenses on MT07 today). Back then riders didn't use helmets or any protection, as they were unavailable and just owning a motorcycle was a big thing itself (money wise speaking). Only after seeing the "modern" motorcycle she agreed that I will definitely need that :D
I have a "Cafe racer" style Leather jacket... I took it with me in the weekend on an ADV ride. And I was so glad I did, the weather was unbearably hot! I had to strap my ADV jacket to the top of the luggage & wear the much cooler jacket, even if it's not as safe in an incident, it was safer than getting heat stroke!
This was EXCELLENT - thank you for having taken the time to give us a pretty comprehensive view of how all this got started up, and especially pointing how human safety was kind of a, "Huh, well, I guess we gotta do SOMETHIN' to make sure there are humans around to BUY our bikes," rationale at the beginning.
I'm disappointed there's not even a mention of the riding gear of gixxer squids or busa bros. They're arguably an important statistic towards the evolution of riding gear.
Nice stuff! Hey, in your opinion, what would be the most maintenance-free, motorcycle to consider, style notwithstanding? I am curious what to consider for just jumping on and riding without worrying about breaking down or having to go back to shop for periodic maintenance other than oil changes and new tires if possible. Cheers!
Yamaha is rated #1 by Consumer Reports. The virago/V Star/ Star bikes are dead-on reliable and go from my 250 to like 1300. The newer 250 & 650's are quite popular.
Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda are solid choices. Japanese bikes are famous for their general reliability whereas European bikes are famous for being very fun rides that need frequent maintenance. Obviously all generalisations.
I can remember buying my first full face helmet back in the 1970s and what a God send and in Australia it was law every motorcyclists had to wear a helmet and the full face helmet in an accident would break a collar bone were an open face helmet would break your neck
I actually have a perfecto jacket I wear when I ride my Harley with alpine stars street armor I wear underneath there really great for colder days ( the heat is unbearable on hot days so fall riding jacket for me)
7 weeks ago I crashed my motorbike and smashed my spine, I got fucked up with other major injuries too. I bought a carbon helmet in August of this year and that 100% saved my life
"Motorcycle safety is the best it's ever been." Yammie, I ask ya... Has there ever been a time in motorcycle history where society said: "These safety improvements are reducing way to many injuries and fatalities! Is there a way we can make this gear worse?" My guy, the present day is always going to have better gear than yesterday. ESPECIALLY with airbag vest technology using AI. Every time someone goes down and that vest gets sent back to the factory, the data is analyzed. The system then applies the lessons learn from patterns to improve deployment.
I know im coming out of no where, but can you make a review on a Benda brand motorcycle? They look cool and sound cool but there is no normal review on them. Thanks
Gloves , full face helmet, and maybe a higher visibility color shirt....but it's gotta be light like a fishing shirt lol... If you are worried about getting jacked , a motorcycle isn't for you.....
You kinda blew through the original Bell star as the first full coverage helmet for retail. And the fact that Shoei helmets were the cheapo ill fitting, poor quality junk alternative to the Bell Star, they didn't step up till years later.
@Yammie Noob, I'd like to know, I'm an Australian that absolutely enjoys your content, can I enter, I'd love to win the bike and call it Bumble Bee junior
it still just a polyurethane foam with a glass fibre layer above, and visco-elastic pads, _road pilots_ will die 😏 protective gear is saving you few weeks of healing from small 60kmh incident
You better not try to shift into story telling. This isn’t your block kid. It’s fine occasionally…but our motorcycle storytelling loyalties lie elsewhere. Sorry yam…should’ve stuck with the literate literary riders from the start but you pivoted to memes and degenerates and now you have to own that. Enjoy your raffles though. Keep milking it as long as they let you
I cracked a helmet down the middle once and just now realized I’m here today because Sir Larry took a spill. Feel bad about the ole boy but maybe some colonialism karma. Good story Yammoo.
By all means run along. We’ll somehow mange to continue without your astute observations. Are you sure you don’t have a TBI Champ? Your comment is as nonsensical as it is baseless. You are whining a video clearly titled as being about PPE evolution doesn’t focus on the bikes? You also claim videos are not related when clearly they aligned to the talking points? Wow…..
Like how the video starts with bashing Ruroc
How it should be lol
Chase on 2w wears ruroc
@JessicaSimonson1976 that means nothing really. Show me a professional racer that isn't a media "influencer" that wears that garbage

@@pnw_r6you do know that they would wear products from whoever pays them though, right? That’s how sponsorship works. 😂

Gotta agree with ya there! My red, white & blue Biltwell is cool with the vinyl stars, but the freed Conn Modular is far more comfortable.

Is it because people used to cycle (without helmets of course)?

Like to see another of this type video, this time on the evolution of tires.
And then superior lubricants ....?
That bon jovi part😂😂😂😂
I think we need a full cover
Isn't that terrible Bon Jovi song about his tour bus?

All the advances in safety tech still can’t fix stupid. We still run tons of MVA calls where no one in the car had a seatbelt on…aaaand they’re dead.
Evolution would always find a way, one small step at a time.
1:55 no thank you
I’m with valve!
👍🏿
Love how educational and funny this video was

I liked this video under the promise and pretense of Yammie n00b doing a karoke episode of Motorcycle related songs
11:25 to be fair…they were living in the future 100 years ago too…everything you mention here was cutting edge
1:55 yes please!!
9:23 - uuuh did they use an actual person as a crash test dummy for that airbag vest lol?
Kudos, enjoyed the history bits !!
You didn't mention Barry Sheene and his crash at Daytona! Very important part of history.
Air bags vests and jackets are great for reducing injuries. Lower price points will accelerate mass adoption in the next 5 years.
Top hat is top tier safety gear😂
I've been riding since the mid 90s, we still call it "shoe-ee" s 'show-ee' means to show off and be swanky.
0:08 Haven’t Seen that video in ages
Compare that to the hockey.... Crotch protectors were applied in 1874... Helmets about a hundred years later 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Priorities 😅😜🤣🤣🤣
I'm disappointed there's not even a mention of the riding gear of gixxer squids or busa bros. They're arguably an important statistic towards the evolution of riding gear.
Oakleys ?
I refuse to winterize my bike 😂😂
2:22 that is one of the most hardcore images I've ever seen.
2:12 I knew the pope was a rider 💀👀
Incredible work

please do a full bon jovi vid. pls☺you said you could
🤣🤣
10:47 till he gets to the Ruroc evolution
what modern motorcycle helmet is that on the thumbnail?
I can remember buying my first full face helmet back in the 1970s and what a God send and in Australia it was law every motorcyclists had to wear a helmet and the full face helmet in an accident would break a collar bone were an open face helmet would break your neck
Which helmet is that on the right side on the thumbnail?
I actually have a perfecto jacket I wear when I ride my Harley with alpine stars street armor I wear underneath there really great for colder days ( the heat is unbearable on hot days so fall riding jacket for me)
7 weeks ago I crashed my motorbike and smashed my spine, I got fucked up with other major injuries too.

You should play in a Bon Jovi cover band.
Nah, brazillian flip flops and back facing cap is still the superior safety equipment around

Chopper bros are still using the 1930's gear
When does the giveaway end?
47 seconds ago is crazy
I got here at 6 minutes ago and feel like a senior citizen
Cherries and Milk?
😂
I know im coming out of no where, but can you make a review on a Benda brand motorcycle? They look cool and sound cool but there is no normal review on them. Thanks
If you sent a Ruroc back a hundred years people would still reject them.
Death on the road was not more accepted back then. You say this as we have thousands of deaths each year and millions of crashes.
What’s wrong w ruroc? :(
Please do a video in bon jovi voice!
Gloves , full face helmet, and maybe a higher visibility color shirt....but it's gotta be light like a fishing shirt lol...

im pretty my like great great uncle or something fought alongside laurance of arabia
Never stop bashing NBT or Ruroc no matter how much gixxerboi tries to trick you
@3:56 the second from the left guy looks just like Vladimir Putin
An English commander working with Arab "gorillas". Lol. Where have we heard that before?
ECE>DOT

True enough on average. But a good helmet, shielded jacket, gloves, jeans and ridin' boots will go a long way toward survival!
The only idiots that i see with rurocs are the content creators that get paid to.
Tweed is 100% abrasion proof.
I didn’t catch this was the Harley hated… I’m out, leave earth Harley hater.

Never EVER sing....
your videos are getting worse and worse day by day - little about the motorcycles and lots of blabla with videos not related - no, enough is enough
By all means run along. We’ll somehow mange to continue without your astute observations.
