  • We've all heard the term "Adopt don't shop", which means instead of buying a puppy from a breeder, you should go rescue a dog from a dog shelter. There's nothing wrong with the sentiment, the only problem is, rescuing a dog from a shelter does absolutely nothing to stop the dog overpopulation problem that we have in the US.
    In this video we breakdown why ethical breeders are going to be crucial in the fight for dog safety and fixing the dog overpopulation problem that we have in the US.
    So if you're in the market for a new dog, whether it be an Akita or some other breed, you have to watch this video!
    And of course for all things Akitas, make sure to subscribe to our channel where we talk about Akitas, Akita puppies, give advice on training Akitas, how to find an Akita of your own, and much more!
    Also be sure to check out more Akita info on our website

    We got our Akita from a shelter, she was born there since her mother got taken from a puppy mill so no idea about how father was, mother didnt want to be seen and was still getting over having every worm possible. Shes still been a wonderful pup incredibly social too, just a shame there are unethical breeders, if the animals were put before profit I really wonder if shelters would have ever been a necessity

    Adoption is an important option to consider before buying. It’s ridiculous to write off all rescue adoptions, as most of those poor souls end up at such places due to neglectful owners, as opposed to inherent issues with those animals. The investment of training and love is required, but there are some amazing rescue animals out there looking for a loving home. ❤

    My Akita was a rescue i personally cant figure out why he was originally given up for adoption ive never had an issue with him and is expertly trained in addition to the training that I've done with him. Im also his 3rd or 4th home depending on how you want to interpret all the paperwork.

    Thank you for this. I've always adopted, but got my last akita girl from an ethical breeder. I've always felt a little guilty. But this made me feel good about it, especially since I had to sign contracts for spaying and another to return her if I couldn't keep her (never gonna happen).

      Yep. Even beyond appearance and behavior disposition there’s a massive question mark over their long term health. Vs with a breeder you have access to the parents health records as well as the well documented issues the breed may be known to encounter at some point. My friend resched a barn cat. Lovely cat he’s a great boy. But, after 3 years they discovered he has heart issues and will suffer from seizures the rest of his life with them now having to bear the cost of his medication that isn’t cheap. The $50 cat ended up being quite costly

    I adopted a 2 year old female who's previous owner just didn't have the time due to her job as a police officer and 2 kids. I don't judge but personally i would have had better planning for the future. Yes she reacts to certain males and has a medium hunt instinct but its not my first rodeo with an Akita. Now her life is with me 24/7 everywhere and we train constantly while going on amazing adventures in the woods. Never regretted it for a second. ❤❤❤

    Honestly, I thought buying dogs was just some rich people shit. And I did look down on my ex or see it as…a shame that they purchased their childhood dog via a breeder. Clearly that was my own ignorance on the topic. I can see some clear benefits, and this reminds me that I shouldn’t be so harsh when people’s desires are…immoral to me in the moment. Because honestly, there’s nothing wrong with this. Maybe the real issue is all dog/cat owners should get screened 1/4 as thoroughly as this and we wouldn’t have so many strays.

  • @safrinas_wereld
    @safrinas_wereld หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would feel better buying a dog if only healthy breeds without all the extreme traits would be bred. For me buying a dog , makes me worry that that dog will get issues because of what breed they are.
    I didn't get my dog based on looks. I get wanting a certain kind of dog. But personality is very important.
    I don't mean to say that I don't think you can buy dogs. But the health should be the most important . Also. There are so many breeds already in shelters.
    You could do both. You can buy a dog and maybe later you adopt one. I also know that adopting can be challenging . So I understand that it's easier sometimes to go to a breeder. But a breeder also can be very strict . That is not always a bad thing.
    I think the dog world has some very good things , but also things that I don't agree with . The dog should always come before what we like to see or what looks cute .
    The original breeds where bred for doing certain jobs anyway and not for what they look like. I am in no way saying that I am an expert. But I wish all dogs where bred in a way that benefits them and not humans. Service dogs and guide dogs are ofcourse a very good thing . Sometimes they are even mix breeds . Because they look for the best traits .
    I admit that in the past I have been very anti breeding . But all I want is that dogs don't suffer because of how we are breeding them .
    I might buy a dog in the future and do a lot of reading on what breed .

    The point you have proved is that no decision is really the perfect decision all the time. There are times when adopting makes sense, and there are times when buying from a breeder makes sense. You shouldn't just adopt because your friend tells you do and get an inferior dog - but if you see a dog that is well behaved at a shelter and if you're able to foster that dog and see what they're really like, i don't see the real issue there.

    I don’t see anything wrong with buying puppies. Like you mentioned bad breeders and irresponsible lazy owners are the real issue. Those of us who seek out high quality ethical breeders to support are not giving up our pets. Shelters are great. They provide a great service and those who prefer to adopt from shelters that’s awesome. Do you. You’re not better than others for getting your pet through an avenue that includes some obscure moral high ground to brag about lol. I’ve adopted from shelters I’ve also adopted from great breeders and love em all equally. Get the animal you want and just do your research. My cat I got through a shelter was given so many anti anxiety medications while in the shelter her medical paperwork when I adopted her was 7 pages long! Naturally my cat behaves much differently than when I first met her in that shelter as she’s no longer drugged up to remain docile and relaxed. She’s super hyper as many young cats are and loves to play. Just some advice for going the shelter route don’t be surprised if your animal turns out way different then when you met them. My animals I got through breeders have pretty much always behaved in the characteristics their breed is known for with a few little personalities traits and quirks etc. but their lives have been fully comfortable, never drugged or forced into stressful environments or rescued from an abusive situation or neglectful home. Another reason why a good breeder is worth the high cost. Your pet will have received only the best care from day 1

      It depends on the state and the shelter

    • @jaydubs6354
      @jaydubs6354 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Eh not often. If it is a severe behavior risk and deemed unsuitable they will euthanize. Certain shelters in certain states/cities that deal with a high volume of unsuitable animals (think of how many dog fighting pit bulls are taken in Atlanta vs Bozeman Montana lol. Of course a shelter in Atlanta will be more likely to euthanize animals over the shelter in Montana because these are dogs who are horrifically abused, trained to show and act on anger and aggression, and be aggressive towards other dogs and people. You can’t waste resources rehabbing a dozen fighting dogs that may take a year + to MAYBE become stable enough to be suitable for adoption. Those same resources could be spent to temporarily house and rescue 3-4 dozen other animals who are very suitable for adoption and can quickly be placed in new homes because they are a desirable breed, have a good temperament, or came from a non abusive situation where maybe they just couldn’t financially support their beloved pet anymore. Order the much all of the large shelters are non profit and when you operate in that manner resources are limited and decisions unfortunately haven’t be made. Trust me no one takes pleasure in euthanizing an animal but knowing you are saving animals every day and getting them into great homes does make up for some of the shitty aspects of animal rescuing

    I personally think that you should either get a dog from a reputable breeder or adopt, cuz backyard breeders and puppy millers are BULL****
    However as long as the breeder gives you information about the breed, the parents of the dog, and information about the dog, I think it’s ok you just have to know about what you’re getting yourself into and if you end up with a unpredictable not trained dog you should probably give it to a professional breeder for training and if all else fail you should give it to a shelter but that should be a last resort

    I applaud the push for responsibility, but if you know anything about human nature this is a non-starter. The vast majority of people are not going to bother with finding a reputable breeder (which many people see as an elitist thing) and paying tons of cash for the pleasure of being judged, scrutinized, and having their life investigated, with the possibility of being found "unworthy" of owning a dog. A much better approach is to bring education to the shelters, and to provide more support for adopters after the dog goes home.

    • @danadess
      @danadess 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheAkitaLife I don't think they are mutually exclusive, but one has a much greater potential for impact. If you don't believe that, it will be due to your belief. Pushing for breeders over shelters (which is what your title alludes to) just won't apply or appeal to most people. In case you haven't noticed, most Americans are struggling financially and won't invest in designer dogs. The educational videos you put out, on the other hand, is actually one of the best ways to ensure good care for dogs. It provides much needed information for dog owners, and is a free and widely available resource.

    • @TheAkitaLife
      @TheAkitaLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@danadess with all due respect, without any actual data, what you're saying is also just a "belief".
      It will likely take both education, and legislation to really fix the dog population problems in the US.
      As far as the title of the video is concerned, I'll leave it up to interpretation, but it's currently serving its purpose and getting people to click on the video.
      Also, Akitas are not designer dogs. Although there was some cross breeding from the end of the Edo period in Japan until about 1910, they are more or less a purebred breed at this point.
      Actual designer dogs like the Golden Doodle currently ranks 3rd in popularity among all breeds in the US.

    • @1packatak
      @1packatak 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are not willing to have your background scrutinized, fill out applications, be interviewed by a responsible breeder and then waiting up to 2 years to get one, then you do not own a dog.
      There are two ways to stop pets in shelters. First: Stop bringing dogs in from other countries!! Make those countries deal with their own problems!!
      Second: stop buying dogs from BYB and puppy mills. That includes these crazy mutts that people keep “inventing”. These are the dogs that are causing shelters to be overrun because people have no freaking clue what is involved in their care.
      If we took all the money we pour into bringing dogs into the US and trying to run shelters, and used it to shut down puppy mills/BYB, then S/N the few dogs we had left, then an only then can we stop the problem.

    Please, seriously, not to berate you, but with the hopes of seeing the full story. Please look up Kim Brophey, a behaviorist and expert with dogs. Seek out her Ted Talk and perhaps even be willing to open your eyes a little more by reading her book. All those specialty dogs were bred at a time when their traits were needed for the jobs they did. That is almost always no longer the case. I doubt your dog is doing the job it was bred for over a thousand or more years. The result is that behavior problems exist because the dogs, like yours, were not meant to be confined in a small home with no work to perform. It’s not the way we live any longer but evolution takes too much time. The result is that dogs end up in shelters because and as a result of all the breed-specific breeding. It doesn’t matter if the breeder is “ethical” - they are immediately on the wrong side of ethics by bringing large numbers of specific types of dogs into this world.
    Think about it all. Don’t react or let your ego cloud your judgement just because you wanted a dog that looked a certain way. Your video is an incomplete story to the full problem and I’m sad to see it out there.

    I feel like for someone who wants a dog to love, not a specific breed of dog, adopting is the way to go? I don't know, someone has to take the adult and senior dogs or they get put to sleep.
    If you MUST have a specific breed of dog though, you're absolutely right! Ask questions of whoever you're buying from, if someone is selling a living being they should be knowledgeable and invested in its future!
    BTW, what do you do if you suspect someone advertising puppies is running a mill operation? Is that something you call the police about? As an animal lover and reputable breeder, what would you do?

    • @TheAkitaLife
      @TheAkitaLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately in most states there are no laws against puppy mills. You can call animal control and they can investigate for abuse, but usually as long as the dogs are sheltered and fed, they won't do anything.

    You expect a breeder to somehow know that the buyer is going to keep the dog forever and be perfect? Telephone conversations and emails feeling them out, sure, but expecting them to visit houses and do psych evaluations, no!
    Also making people sign contracts to spay their purchased pets is not ethical imo, people should be able to breed their pets if they want to.
    I agree with being able to take back the animal though, if within a reasonable time of say, a month. I bought a cat from a woman who only took him back if I gave her £400, this was 1 day after I bought him. She was probably a narcissist and certainly a batch.
    Overall I think your ethical breeder is a fantasy and bs.

    • @TheAkitaLife
      @TheAkitaLife  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No where in this video do I claim that a breeder will know that an owner will be perfect.
      If you want to breed an animal don't sign a legally binding document saying you won't.
      If a breeder has a policy of taking back an animal, that's their choice, and many great breeders do this.
      Many breeders want to see where the pet will be living. That's a healthy and normal practice.
      Overall I think your comment is low IQ.
