How Much Do Akitas Cost?

  • How much do Akitas cost? That’s a question we get all the time when people see our American Akita, Haga. Budgeting for a furry friend like an Akita should be one of the first things you do before running off to a breeder or shelter to get a new dog, but when people ask this question, they are usually only thinking about the purchase price of the puppy, when in reality, that’s where the costs begin. In this article, we’re going to go over everything you need to know about how much you should pay for an Akita puppy, and what other costs you can expect to incur in your first year and beyond of Akita ownership.
How Much Do Akita Puppies Cost?
It has been said that champion Akita Inus in Japan can sell for as much as $75,000. Fortunately American Akitas in the states are much cheaper. If you’re looking at various online puppy marketplaces, you will see a wide range of Akita puppies, prices may range from $600 all the way up to $3,500 or even more. If you think that’s bad, take a look at some of the most expensive dog breeds on this list. You may be wondering why there is such a large discrepancy in the prices of these Akita puppies. It typically comes down to one thing: The amount of time, effort, and resources the breeder has put into not just the puppies themselves, but the parents.
Ideally, you’ll want to get a puppy from a breeder that shows their dogs. Why? Because dog shows are about dogs conforming to breed standards. If an Akita is a show champion, that means they check all of the boxes for the standards of being an Akita. This helps to keep the breed in tact. Imagine if there were no more Golden Retrievers, or no more Poodles, because people let them mix with other breeds until there were no more of the original breed left. That would be a tragedy.
But the truth is, showing your dog to win a championship is expensive from a financial and time investment standpoint. This price is typically reflected in the price of the puppies, particularly if you are paying for a stud fee.
This is why we caution potential Akita owners on buying a puppy just because it’s cheap. Inexpensive puppies usually cost more in the long run due to the multitude of health issues they may have as a result of not coming from a well constructed breeding program.
Typically what you can expect to pay for a quality dog from a reputable breeder is $1,200-$2,500. Anything less than $1,200 indicates that the breeder is probably just looking to make some quick cash, and are likely a “back yard breeder.” Anything more than $2,500, you have to start asking yourself why. If you plan on showing your Akita, you may be willing to pay top dollar for the exact puppy you want, but if you just want an Akita as a companion or pet, you can usually find a really great dog from an ethical breeder for much less than that.
With that said, just because someone is charging top dollar for a puppy, doesn’t mean they’re a reputable breeder. Make sure to always do your homework before buying a puppy. You can watch our video on how to find a good breeder by clicking here.
    Other Expenses
As we mentioned above, once you buy the puppy, your expenses are really just getting started. Here’s a breakdown of all of the expenses in incurred in our first year and a half owning an Akita.
    Puppy purchase price: $2,500
Transporting the puppy from Idaho to Illinois via plane: $400
Travel, food, lodging, gas driving from New Hampshire to Illinois: $1,000
Crate, toys, collar, leash, dog bed etc.. $1,000
Puppy health plan from Banfield: $780 ($65/month)
    Pet insurance: $600 ($50/month)
    Dog Food: $600 ($50/month)
    Toys: $300 (estimate)
    Dog Training Bootcamp: $1,500
    Day care $2,500 ($50/week)
    Random vet expenses $500 (estimate)
    Neutering and Gastropexy: $1,200
    Total: $12,880.
This is obviously a list of expenses we have incurred, however, your situation may have additional expenses to consider. For example if you are out of the house for long hours due to work, you may need to hire a dog walker, or bring your Akita to a day care service more frequently.
If you travel a lot for work you may need to board your Akita on a regular basis (we actually don’t recommend getting an Akita if this is the case).
You may rent an apartment or condo that has a pet fee.
The point is there are many things to considering when budgeting for a dog.

In Missouri AKC champion show dogs cost about $2500 10 years ago. Never spent a dime on training (have always done it myself with every dog I have ever owned) and never neutered the males although I did spay the females after they went into 1 to 2 heats. As for pet insurance, it is a racket and i have never used it. Used to own chow chows that used to blow out stifle joints and need ACL and MCL surgeries in the form of tibilial plateau leveling osteotomies which used to cost about $3500 to $5000 per knee at the U or MO Veterinary College. As for bloat, I don't worry about it as undetected stage IV cancer is far more likely to kill your Akita then bloat is so long a you do not feed the dog bowls of dry kibble. Small meals and avoiding dry kibble as it swells in the stomach are the best ways to avoid bloat as well as avoiding raw foods and bones. Cooked rice and chicken and meat with supplements given in smaller more frequent meals are best with this breed. They eat like royalty and they eat a lot.
Put it this way, if you own horses and drive a BMW or Jaguar, then a Chow Chow or an America Akita will seem relatively affordable but nothing about an American Akita is cheap as just feeding it high quality food is very expensive. That said, American Akitas can be a very healthy breed and if the breeder bred for OFA and/or PennHip, orthopedic issues should be minimal.
I am not a fan of dry kibble as the FDA and DOA do a very poor job of inspecting pet food companies and their supply chains. Even Royal Canin and HIlls Science Diet will contain trace elements of rat poison, pesticides and herbicides which are known carcinogens. Plus dry kibble is the # 1 cause of bloat as are bones and raw foods.
That said, owning one or two American Akitas is not cheap but neither is owning a boat or a Jaguar automobile or several horses or joining a fancy country club or sending your kids to private school.
For young people or poor people, this is not the best dog for you. Too many people will watch this video and think they can make money with back yard breeding. I would never buy from anyone who is not a AKC registered breeder that actively shows their dogs.
Neutering a male American Akita is not generally advisable for temperament as it does not reduce aggression and it can lead to obesity and if done prematurely, it can cause bone plate issues in a slow growing breed that is not fully mature before 2 to 2.5 years. Neutering raises BMI and can increase the risk of certain types of cancers. Absent an enlarged prostate or testicular cancer or an undescended testicle, it is generally not necessary or desirable.
You can also avoid the need a crate and instead simply get a couple of baby gates if you need to keep the dog in certain areas at certain times.
Lastly I cook for my dogs because I raised by dog breeders who cooked for their AKC dogs 50 years ago. Chicken, beef, pork and rice and/or pasta with supplements and occasional servings of moist high quality medical food kibble (Royal Canin or Hill Science Diet) are all I feed my dogs. Most store bought Kibble is laced with pesticides and herbicides and it is often carcinogenic so I would recommend against relying only on supermarket or pet store acquired kibble. Dry kibble expands in the stomach and can cause bloat. Most pet food companies are profit driven and poorly regulated by the FDA and DOA and you are therefore much better off feeding your Akita fish with rice or meat or chicken or pork with rice which is what these dogs ate centuries ago in Japan.
In sum, there is nothing inexpensive about owning 1, let alone 2 American Akitas and horses, Chow Chows, tropical fish, birds, cats, chinchilla or any other number of pets. Think carefully before getting such a dog. I recommend home ownership a pre-requisite to owning such dogs because they need fenced yards. You also need to be a homebody with these dogs as most do not like being separated from their owners for even a few hours. So if you work from home on a farm, these are the perfect dog.

    • @TheAkitaLife
      @TheAkitaLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The rate of bloat in Akitas is about 1 in 5. Currently there is no legitimate scientific research to suggest its cause, so it's definitely a serious issue, and every Akita owner should do a prophylactic gastropexy as it is inexpensive and has minimal side effects.
I'd have to also disagree on insurance. We currently pay about $40/ month. That will be under $6k for the life span of the dog. The average cost of an ACL repair is about $4500. Insurance has already saved us about $2k this year.
I'm not sure why you think anyone would watch this video and think they could or should become a backyard breeder. We don't in any way condone unethical breeding.

    • @rf8481
      @rf8481 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@TheAkitaLife I don't know where you got that clearly incorrect statistic but the the incidence of bloat is far less than 1 in 5. The real incidence of bloat has been estimated at 2.9 to 6.8 cases per 1,000 dogs which is far far less than the 20 percent figure your are promoting. Cancer is far more lethal to Akitas than bloat overall. While elderly dogs and sick dogs are more at risk of bloat, the risk of cancer in such dogs is 20 times greater than bloat. How do I know this, try taking the time to look at the stats our of academic veterinary college clinics. Avoiding kibble with soy as an ingredient is a good start and avoiding kibble altogether is also a good start. Dogs should be fed quality food as they age and fatty foods and bones should be avoided. Dogs like people develop digestive system issues as they age but gut bacteria and gut fermentation are typically the cause of rapid explosive gas in the gut so never feed your dog rancid meat or spoiled food or poor quality food and keep the quantity of food smaller and do not feed dogs in hot rooms where they are likely to drink more water. Keep dogs cool even in winter..
Many vets makes a good living performing unnecessary neutering and stapling the stomach to the rib cage as they do with cows. It is a racket based stoking fear in dog owners that bloat is much common than it really is. Vaccine resistant strains of parvo virus from coyote scat are a greater risk to most dogs than bloat. I would also not let your dog drink out of ponds, lake or puddles and these may contain bacteria that can populate the gut and increase the risk of bloat. Same for outdoor feeding wherein flies can land on the dog's food and leave bacteria on it. Foodborne illness in commercial pet foods is a much larger problem than people realize and the FDA and DOA expend very little resources on food safety. Quality control at many plants is non-existent and cheap ingredients to maximize profits are the norm with many companies.
Consider cooking for your dogs as you do yourself and of course know the signs of bloat and have a plan should it happen.

@@rf8481 Vets rarely recommend gastropexy for dogs that weigh less than 100lbs, which is a small fraction of the American dog population. To suggest its some kind of money making scheme is hilarious at best. Many hospitals don't even offer the procedure.
Hop on to any Akita community on the web and search for bloat and see how many people post every single month about losing their Akita to bloat, and it will confirm that 20% statistic which comes directly from VCA
The claims you've made here about food, bloat, cancer and insurance are not correct. If you have some peer review research to share I'd be happy to read it, but I literally write about Akitas for a living and have seen no such data.

@@TheAkitaLife I don't know why you persist in challenging my expertise in American Akitas. Your factoid comes from a web site with no footnotes or studies quoted and your anecdotal observations about forums and facebook groups are not scientific evidence.
What is peer reviewed scientific evidence is the percentages I quoted to you about the true incidence being not 20% but rather a 5% lifetime incidence of bloat in all large breeds with an marked increase in likelihood with age progression and chronic disease. Hence my comment about there being no manifest clinical need for prophylactic surgeries and my comment that commercial self-interest was driving certain vets to recommend such arguably unnecessary procedures.

      Abstract
Objective: To compare incidence of and breed-related risk factors for gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) among 11 dog breeds (Akita, Bloodhound, Collie, Great Dane, Irish Setter, Irish Wolfhound, Newfoundland, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, Standard Poodle, and Weimaraner).
      Design: Prospective cohort study.
      Animals: 1,914 dogs.
Procedure: Owners of dogs that did not have a history of GDV were recruited at dog shows, and the dog's length and height and depth and width of the thorax and abdomen were measured. Information concerning the dogs' medical history, genetic background, personality, and diet was obtained from owners, and owners were contacted by mail and telephone at approximately 1-year intervals to determine whether dogs had developed GDV or died. Incidence of GDV based on the number of dog-years at risk was calculated for each breed, and breed-related risk factors were identified.
Results and clinical relevance: Incidence of GDV for the 7 large (23 to 45 kg [50 to 99 lb]) and 4 giant (> 45 kg [> 99 lb]) breeds was 23 and 26 cases/1,000 dog-years at risk, respectively. Of the 105 dogs that developed GDV, 30 (28.6%) died. Incidence of GDV increased with increasing age. Cumulative incidence of GDV was 5.7% for all breeds. The only breed-specific characteristic significantly associated with a decreased incidence of GDV was an owner-perceived personality trait of happiness.

I agree. I stopped dry kibble when I was paying over $100.00 for a large bag, and then found out it had pesticides. I now cook my Akita all his meals. Go to Costco and get a $4.99 roasted chicken. I peel off all the skin and de bone it. 4 chickens is $20.00 an lasts a week. I then use a food processor ( $50.00) and grind up organic carrots, apples, cucumbers, etc.. and add that to his home cooked meal, along with organic brown rice. It costs me about $100.00 per month but far better than kibble. I do not remove my males testicles. My female I had her fixed. They do need socialization and a few walks. Make them "sit" before feeding them. Both my male and Akita puppies HATED their crates. So, I let them sleep on the floor which is what they preferred.

i would really say almost any purebred type dog is going to be expensive. our first 2 akitas came from the shelter, 1 as a 2 month old puppy and the other was a little over a year. the other 2 we currently have, the female was $400 (half japanese and american akita) and the other now 3 month old male was $500. the best option may be to not forget about local classified ads, whice i got our current akitas. our female was the last of the litter and for some reason nobody wanted her, the male was the biggest from the litter but the litter itself was supposedly unexpected. (the males parents wer akc papered as well). anyway, in the end 2 dogs that needed a home now have one reguardless of the price, isint that what really matters.

Have 3 akitas, go through 35 pounds of food a week, not too forget the toppers to the meals. If meals not special they protest, lots of treats. Most have skin allergies so there's vet costs. Lost and akita in 2019 due to vkh, those vet costs 350 a month for meds. The sum of my story. Priceless. Still love them and would never change a thing. Love the breed. ❤

@@TheAkitaLife, I am from California. Bought my Akita from a professional breeder in the mid west for $3,500. He is not neutered and never will be. He is my pet and I will never show him. I will never feed kibble! Kibble is disgusting! I cook my dogs food of organic brown rice, Chicken, Beef and Wild caught ( never farmed) fish. I go to Costco and get a whole chicken for $5.00. I skin it and give him the meat sans bones. I give him water that has been through a filter. My dog is now age 5 and is in perfect health. He gets groomed every 5-6 months ($85.00) and lives mostly in the house with me. Summer time the a/c is on for him. In winter ( 40 - 50's) he likes to sleep outside. My backyard is 10,000 square feet of grass. I do not have insurance and never will. My dog is treated more like a child than a dog - meaning, I don't leave him alone all day. He gets a 60 min walk at night or early morning. I get compliments all the time on his beautiful coat. Before him, I had a female Akita ( long hair). She was a therapy dog. We visited Senior centers and worked with autistic children. She was a wonderful Akita. Both are/were socialized. I am not rich, but do own two Mercedes and a beautiful home. I put everything into my dog ( money. Time. Effort). I have no children and not married. My dog is treated very well. Everyone has their own lifestyle and budget. My one advice? NEVER feed your dog kibble. Get a food processor ( $50.00) and put in organic carrots, apples, cucumbers and maybe celery, and grind it up. Between the brown organic rice and chicken, beef or fish your dog will thrive. If you are on a budget, try canned sardines ( in water only) and give it two cans with some brown rice ( white is ok). Stop being a lazy person. STOP feeding your dog kibble!

Read their Google reviews, discuss with them their training methods, ask them which difficult breeds they've worked with. If they don't have large breed/guard dog breed experience, i would pass.
Avoid trainers who are "positive only" as that is unlikely to work with an Akita.

I was one of the early Akita owners in the 80’s. No one knew what he was. I was inspired by my schoolmates brother who had one as well as Helen Keller’s story. I read every book, pre internet. And trained him and socialized him myself. He was an amazing dog. Not for the uninvolved or lazy owner. Owning a dog shouldn’t cost as much as a Rolex. I don’t care what breed. I didn’t t spend a penny on training or doggie daycare. This is millennial hooey. I fed him amazing food and gave him all of his shots myself. He went to the vet once a year and I groomed his nails and brushed him everyday. Brushed his teeth too. We were involved owners and didn’t go away as kids in our 20’s much. But we never boarded him and he traveled well. Don’t buy an Akita as a look at me dog. Not fair to the dog or anyone else.

Yah a Pit sized Akita basically till you look him in the eyes and those Egyptian eye-lined eyes with an Akita body and fur. Most my Rotties ended up to be over $12,000 dogs including their cremation, and all were rescues! LOL!!!!! So plan ahead! (RAW Cow Heart is cheap and a great treating and DRIED HEART for training meat-CHEAP TOO!) All dogs have their downside issues, but it is all the good things that you can bring out in them and win over the negatives- plus they bring out the best in us as well! BE good- SLM (castration is best after the 2nd year, they get all the benefits of the Hormones to make the dog robust in stature, I don't do this procedure but it has merit.) Being US Army Retired living out in the country, my dogs go where I go so I have the luxury of being DAD 24/7. You can have everything but if not time- get a stuffed animal and enjoy your freedom alone, hounds like these will not do well learning about life with humans on their own. They will make DOG decisions, and that usually does not go well for them, OR YOU!.

Secondly, my original comment apparently DOES pertain to yours, which is to say, just because a dog has a "pedigree" doesn't mean its well bred, thus why it's possible for a dog with a pedigree to die prematurely. Part of ethical breeding is screening the applicants who want to buy a puppy.
Here in the US animal shelters routinely euthanize dogs because they are over run with animals and cannot care for them all. How do these animals end up there? People buying pets they can't afford, and then surrendering the pet to the shelter.
