For those of you who are curious about the original Nutcracker storyline, here's the abridged version: Marie (Clara) receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather at a Christmas party. Her brother breaks the doll's arm, but she puts a cloth sling around it to fix it. The godfather tells them a tale about a handsome young man who broke a princess' curse brought by the Mouse Queen by cracking a nut or something and that somehow kills the Mouse Queen, but then the boy is cursed to turn into a Nutcracker in return and was shunned. But the Mouse King, comes to attack as revenge for killing his wife. Marie throws a shoe at the Mouse King, but is tossed into a bookcase and is knocked out. Her parents gaslight her, saying the whole incident was her imagination and she should grow up. But the next night, she sacrifices her sweets to the Mouse King and the Nutcracker tells her that if she gives him his sword, he can kill the Mouse King. She does. The next night, he kills the Mouse King and he's transformed into a human, whisking her away to the Land of Sweets. After she's brought back home, the guy comes knocking asking for hand in marriage, which she says yes. He comes the next year to whisk her away to his kingdom and crowns her as his queen. Considering that she was EIGHT when this happened and the boy is probably a teenager at this point, that's...a whole can of worms. And super gross.
Edit: Realized that I left out the fact that the Nutcracker is the godfather's nephew in the fairytale. My bad. Not sure if the same can be said for the ballet.

The Nutcracker is based off a short story by E.T.A Hoffman. It’s about a girl named Marie/Clara who grows fond of a nutcracker doll that was gifted got her and her siblings. While playing with the doll, her brother Fritz breaks it and Marie tends to it. She notices the doll comes alive for a short while but writes it off as her imagination. At night, the grandfather clock that was given to her by her godfather Drosselmeyer strikes and the seven-headed Mouse King with his army appears. The toys and the nutcracker fight them off but when the nutcracker is almost defeated by the Mouse King, Marie takes her slipper and throws it at him before fainting. When she wakes up, she tries to tell her parents what happened but they don’t believe her. Days later, when Drosselmeyer returns after fixing the nutcracker up, he tells Marie the story of Princess Pirlipat and Madam Mouserinks, the Queen of the Mice, which explains how nutcrackers came to be and why they look the way they do. The Mouse Queen tricked Prilipat’s mother and in retaliation the king had mouse traps invented by his court inventor named Drosselmeyer and started killing mice. The Mouse Queen was angry at this and swore to get revenge. To protect the queen and the Princess, the king had cats surround her to scare off the mice but one of the maids who as tasked with keeping the cats awake fell asleep. The Mouse Queen cursed the princess, turning her ugly with a huge head, a wide grin, and a beard like a nutcracker. The king blamed Drosselmeyer and tasked him to find a cure. After some searching, Drosselmeyer found that the princess could only be cured by eating the Crackatook nut, which must be cracked and handed to her by a man who had never been shaved nor worn boots since birth, and who must, without opening his eyes hand her the kernel and take seven steps backwards without stumbling. After searching for said man and nut for years, Drosselmeyer learns his own cousin was in possession of the nut and that his son was the man they were looking for. The King promised that whoever cracked the nut would marry Prilipat and upon the man doing so, the princess regained her beauty. However, when Drosselmeyer’s nephew was on his seventh step, he tripped over the Mouse Queen and Prilipat’s curse was transferred onto him. Upon seeing his figure, Prilipat refused to marry him. After learning this, Marie is threatened by the Mouse King, the Mouse Queen’s son, that if she didn’t give him her sweets and dolls he would harm the nutcracker. Wanting to protect the doll, Marie complies but the Mouse King asks for more each night. The nutcracker tells Marie to give him a sword which she takes from her brother’s toys and he defeats the Mouse King once and for all. He then takes her to the doll kingdom where Marie experiences wonderful things. When she falls Asleep, she wakes up back at her house and again tells her parents who don’t believe her. Marie swears to the nutcracker that if he were real she would not be like Prilipat and she would love him no matter what he looks like. Her mother then tells her that Drosselmeyer’s nephew has come to visit and when he sees her, he tells Marie that by saying she loved him despite his looks, she broke the curse. He asks her to marry him and she accepts. He takes her to the doll kingdom where they marry and she becomes queen.
The only thing that I don’t get about this story is 1) When did the nutcracker become prince? He was the son of a puppeteer before the curse so when did he ascend to prince hood? And 2) Marie was seven when this all happened. How did she get married? What!? I would highly recommend looking for The Nutcracker by Jetleg Prodcutions because it’s the only adaption that follows the original story to a T.

@@Teddy-wd3ro *tl;dr* : Nah, he's a Turk, they're not Arabs and he's currently a Triscuit according to the US Census.
*TED Talk version* : US racial labels are based in arbitrary White supremacist bullsht and thinking Arabs aren't White shows how it keeps changing as Middle Easterners/North Africans aka MENA people are labeled as White on the US Census and have been for decades but are clearly no longer treated nor seen as such with Arabs or people who "look Arab" (...F in the chat for Mediterraneans, Indians, SE Asians, etc) being seen as not White and Muslim, ex. attacks on Sikhs after 9/11.
MENA people being White had been assumed since the 1800s but was re-litigated in the early 1900s with the "Asia side" of Turkey being a line in the sand due to the Chinese Exclusion Act. So Turks, Kurds, Syrians, Lebanese, etc were in dispute as the Wheat Thins couldn't have a group they didn't know whether to hate or accept, they needed answers! So the literal Right answer was broken up into skin color and religious/cultural requirements (i.e Protestant Christian/Anglo "compatible" Culture). Mormons also weren't fully accepted as White due to these requirements for a bit but unlike Catholics it was too late they were born and bred in the US so yeah.
So light skinned Christian MENA people were often given White status by default or in court cases but not those who were or were seen as darker and or Arab/Muslim until the Naturalization Act of 1952 stopped all racial restrictions (on paper). Prior tho in 1944 the 1st Arab Muslim was officially ruled as White in the court case Ex Parte Mohriez which set the current Census precedent but not the post-9/11 social one.
So did you notice a trend? US society has looped back to Arab/Muslim= not White cause being White is arbitrary European colonizer bullsh*t based in exclusion that can be taken away from groups and has. It's also of course not just a US thing.
Why do I know all this as a Black American with no MENA roots? Because I had to research the concept of Whiteness and the legal battles many took to become White for a term paper. If I had to suffer thru how US racial hierarchies and oppression was established beyond Native genocide/slavery/Jim Crow/etc and why it affects all to this day, everyone has to especially the Ritz! *This is the end of my TED Talk. Yall can go now, happy holidays.* 👍🏿

There are multiple versions of the Nutcracker story, but the version that Tchaikovsky used as inspiration for his ballet was written by Alexandre Dumas (author of The Three Musketeers). The story is supposed to be a dream that Clara's godfather, a wizard who never explicitly admits to being a wizard, gives as a present on Christmas Eve. I've always loved the ballet, so seeing a Nutcracker with no dancing is already "no"--I can only imagine the horror of going into this blind.

A very different and much more self destructive feeling than say watching Barbie movies, which are still enjoyable to watch as an adult
I think what is so funny coming back to this a year later is realizing how if you tried to show an adult this movie for the first time it would be insanely hard to follow. But as a 7 year old child I completely understood everything happening plot wise. The stuff like nazi rats I did not grasp. But the acid trip-ness of the plot never had me confused.
