So you got it fixed. Good... 5:13
Rad man! I love a good clean case and screen!
Man, this thing is so nice now. Went from trash to treasure for sure. Love it being backlit.
I completely forgot to comment when I watched this. Excellent video, I love fixing DMG Gameboys. Yours was defiantly gross. I'm glad you got to fix it up and this mod is fun to do. I did one like this for my husband and he loved it. Great to see more Gameboys being fixed. I'm getting ready to fix two I found with half the screen not working as well.
Thanks... This was a fun mod. One of the easiest mods I've done. Literally takes just a few minutes to do. Like I said in the video putting the two halves back together with that ribbon cable is the toughest part. Lol. Yeah it was nasty, whatever was on it ate up the plastic pretty bad. But it's better than new now, enjoying playing the DMG in the dark. Lol.. I'm sure Mr. Dedbattery loves his a much as I do mine. 👍 Can't wait to see your Gameboy repairs coming up.
big thumbs up! I remember when you got that DMG . I like that kit my IPS DMG's are an early versino only have like 6 colors or so not 30 something plus mine doesn't have pixel modes or anything. I'll have to do up another one some day with this kit I have one more extra DMG without a screen lying around1
Yeah it took awhile, almost 2 years to get to fixing it. Just other projects jumped ahead of this one.
Having all the colors is pretty cool, but there's really only a few that are really playable. Most are dark, or the color contrast makes it hard to see.
Really, that's my only complaint besides the battery life is 75% of what it would have been with the OG Dot Matrix screen. So I'll be getting some kind of rechargeable solution soon. I've already burnt through a 12 pack of batteries since I finished this mod a couple days ago. A DMG GB with an IPS screen and Alkaline AA's, is an expensive habit to get into 🤣🤣
Very nice job on the restoration. You should consider putting the original Nintendo pads back in the machine when you replace the audio cap. They will work 20 years from now and those Chinese ones will be lucky to work 1 year from now.
Personally, I would have bought some 3M double sided tape at home depot or something rather than use the tape it came with.
Also, I would hold onto the old case and try to restore it, though it might not be possible if it has burns in it.
Chinese products are bad enough, but pirated Chinese products are just of very questionable quality. Cheap plastics can be very destructive. They often contain banned substances too.
One last thing is if you want to use it a lot, pick up a set of rechargeable batteries. That IPS screen is probably going to through them pretty quickly. Plus, you can just leave them in the unit. There is virtually no chance of rechargeable batteries leaking.
Thanks man. The old contacts were eaten through too, so that was a no go. The front part of the case is a total loss. The plastic is etched so bad you can see pin holes though it when you hold it up to light. The buttons were disintegrating in my hands.
When I open it back up to replace the audio cap, I will use better tape if it's loose already. If not, It'll stay that way until it comes loose.
I'm keeping the OG controller board and screen. I'll try to fix the screen. The ribbon cable contact has just come loose from the board. Should be able to use hot air and some direct applied pressure to seat it back down to get it working again.
Yep, I've already looked into getting the rechargeable Li-ion battery pack mod. 👍👍
@@RetrogamerGenX Just get 4 nimh low self discharge AA cells. They work great. I use them in a lot of radios. The main issue with radios is keeping batteries in them which almost always leak. But rechargeables never leak.
8:50 You should use the original contacts. They are much higher quality. Even if they are glazed a little, all you have to do is drag the carbon pad lightly against a piece of paper as if it were an eraser. That resurfaces the pads.
They were damaged by what ever ate up the plastic too. The had holes in them, and the button didn't work right when pushed. They had a mushy feeling to them.
Do you know if they make an oled screen for the original GB? An OLED screen will look better and dramatically increase the battery life.
Might try that on my next Gameboy.
6:22 Why are you playing this godawful copyright free music? This is the worst thing youtubers do. It's like they are afraid of silence.
