This song helped build on Lionel Ritchie's reputation as a song writer and it did have that country twang. He penned songs for Kenny Rogers.

This is one of the coldest break-up songs ever! By the way, Lionel Richie wrote a lot of country music He was always giving them to other artists until their manager told him not to give another song away, and that they were going to start recording their OWN songs, no matter what kind of song it was!!
    Sail on down the line
    ,
'Bout a half a mile or so
    ,
And I don't really wanna know,
    Where you're going
    .
Maybe once or twice, you see
    ,
Time after time I tried to,
To hold on to what we got
    ,
    But, now you're going
    .
    And I don't mind
    ,
About the things you're gonna say, Lord
    ,
I gave all my money and my time
    .
    I know it's a shame
    ,
But, I'm giving you back your name
    .
    Yeah, yeah
    .
Guess, I'll be on my way
    ,
I won't be back to stay,
    I guess I'll move along
    ,
I'm looking for a good time
    .
    Sail on down the line
Ain't it funny how the time can go
Friends say they told me so
    But it doesn't matter
    It was plain to see
That a small town boy like me
Just wasn't your cup of tea
    I was wishful thinking
    I gave you my heart
And I tried to make you happy
And you gave me nothing in return
You know, it ain't so hard to say
"Would you please just go away
    ?"
    Yeah, yeah
    .
    I've thrown away the blues
    ,
    I'm tired of being used
    ,
    I want everyone to know
    ,
I'm looking for a good time
    , good time, yeah.
    I gave you my heart
    ,
And I tried to make you happy
    ,
And you gave me nothing in return
You know, it ain't so hard to say
    ,
"Would you please just go away
    ?"
    Yeah, yeah
    Got nothing else to lose
    ,
    I'm tired of being used
    ,
    I want everyone to know
I'm looking for a good time
    , good time.
    Oh, sail on, honey
    !
Good times never felt so good
    !
    Sail on, honey
    !
Good times never felt so good
    !
    Sail on, sugar
    !!
Good times never felt so good!
    Sail on. . .
    Sail on
    . . .
    Sail on. . .

This song is a straight up masterpiece. It is indeed the perfect, beautiful, peculiar hybrid of country and soul that made it such a hit. The Commodores are country boys/bruthas after all from down south at Tuskegee in Alabama. The more you listen to the song I guarantee the more you’ll come to love it. Also I was partially weaned on country music through my father who is a black, Maryland country boy.

Yes they are "brothers" and they were musically diverse , although most of their songs had a R&B and funk vibe..... "Sweet Love"
"Just to Be Close to You, "Fancy Dancer", "Easy",, Heaven Knows, " Funny Feelings ", Three Times a Lady","Flying High" ,and "Still", to name a few.

@@ronniepatton7730 Ronnie - he (and I) were referring to brothers as black men ( when JJ made the comment in his reaction,) - NOT biological brothers . That's why I put brothers in quotes ! JJ made the comment because the song had a country feel to it and he was expecting R&B

Lionel always had that country thing going. He's very respected in the world of country music. He wrote Lady for Kenny Rogers, which was a big hit.

Not surprised , they were from Alabama

  • @zanohoriamazo1
    @zanohoriamazo1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yep that’s why Kenny Rogers had such a big hit wit Lionel’s tune, Lady. Them boys come from country. Country singers are soulful. Should see a documentary called, R&B & Country, combing artists from both genres, like Al Green & Lyle Lovett. I believe Patti LaBelle is on that one too. Lionel’s successful writing for the Commodores definitely set him up nice to go solo: Hello; All Night Long; Love Will Find A Way; Running With The Night; Penny Lover; Endless Love (w/Diana Ross)

You can really hear The southern accent in Lionel's voice here. He's from Tuskegee Alabama and the members of the Commodores met and got together there in college. We've always loved our Commodores here in Bama.

Growing up in the sixties , I am used to hearing country music, jazz, soul, rock, hard rock , and funk on the same station. I like songs and groups like the Commodores that mix genres. Every genre has something in it that is fantastic and contributes to great music and when you mix it up in one song it is even better. Check out "Sweet Love" and " Still." The Commodore brothers gave us beautiful music. You are the best reactor on You Tube!

Commodores are primarily funk and r&b, but have a lot of diversity in their music. I feel like in the 60s and especially 70s there were a lot of groups that had much more diversity in the music. Combining elements of all the music they grew up with from funk, blues, rock, r&b, soul, pop , latin and even jazz . The music of those eras is very interesting to me because of this.

These brothers are from Tuskegee, Alabama and they all know country. The writer, Lionel Ritchie has had a few smashes that crossed over on the country music charts. This being one. The Commodores owe a lot of their success to producer James Carmichael who produced all their Motown albums until he and Lionel left the group to go solo. For a serious treat: Look up (TH-cam) "Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie singing "Lady" " live at some award show. You'll get some goosebumps at what seasoned pros they were at the time. (Lionel wrote it and recorded it for Kenny and it was perhaps his biggest hit of hits.) RIP Kenny Rogers.

You really have to see the actual music video. That way you get to see the others singing and harmonizing along with Lionel. This song just sounds so good!! I really like that this song came from left-field with a country feel to it, but still soulful. I just shows their creativity and versatility.

This was done during the time when Lionel Richie was taking them in a different direction. Becoming crossover artists and groups was the preferred path. It also laid the stage for Richie to become a Pop/Soft Rock solo artist.

Whewwwww this song was a pretty hard listen for me as a kid after it first came out. Lionel was so far ahead of the times with his visions. He made this song Country R&B it was a little weird. I def give him his props, he changed the game with this one here. He became such an in-demand songwriter and became a Megastar. Almost no one was a bigger pop star in the 80's than Lionel..... He wrote the country Mega super hit "Lady" for Kenny Rogers which was Kenny's greatest selling song of his career. "Sail On" reached the top ten on both the US and UK music charts that same year. Richie later recorded the song with country singer Tim McGraw for 2012's . I APPLAUD YOU MR. LIONEL RITCHIE....

Most of the original Commodores are natives of the Southeastern US, and met while they were attending the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. So living in that region it was inevitable that their songwriting style would be influenced by Country music. In fact that 'Awww' thing you hear from Funk bands like the Commodores, Sly & the Family Stone, EWF, Ohio Players, and Cameo comes from the drawl many African American Southerners brought with them during First and Second Migrations into the North, Midwest, and West Coast.

Lionel Ritchie said that he originally wrote this with Glen Campbell in mind. He's said that the Commodores couldn't get a hit for the longest time, but he kept writing all of these songs for other artist. At one point, one of the producers at Motown said "I don't want to hear anything that you wrote for the Commodores. I want to hear what you wrote for everybody else!"

This is just a beautiful song that I played loudly the day of my divorce. Even though I was hurting, it was a new beginning, and I was "looking for a good time" as well to help me back into the world. The Commodores were a diverse style of Funk where in this song it definitely has a country flavor to it, however it still has Soul. It definitely shows your intellect that you got past the Country vibe and appreciated the great song that it is. There is nothing wrong with Country at all, but you weren't expecting that, and still appreciated it. Great job Brother. Great work reacting as usual! Peace!

This is when the Commodores started slipping in the Black community. Their first songs (Machine Gun) were dance, R&B and Funk...then they tried crossing over to all this bullshit! Although, I must say I LOVE the song "Easy." Then Lionel even came out with a song called "Dancing on the Ceiling,"...then I knew he'd lost his mind! lol The Commodores were a good though!!!

"is this the right song"? LOLOLOL. Lionel Richie liked to dip a toe into country a lot. I admit - I am NOT a fan of his country songs....
