    My fav camp in Kgalagadi is Rooiputs >> We used to camp at Nossob in the 1970's to Mid 1980's in PRIME Tourist Month April with our 2 x Pre School boys (Now late 30's) and be the ONLY campers there for 3 weeks >. we had the Northern park to ourselves >> now we go back but realise things have changed but 10 yrs ago found Rooiputs and Polentswa for a bit of the ol Time feel

      Heard a lot of good things about Rooiputs! We would have loved to do Rooiputs as well, but unfortunately was not possible/practical with the border closures. One of the aspects of Kgalagadi we really enjoy is that it's never crowded, and we've been there twice in he December period.
      Beautiful park.

    Electricity goes off between 10 at night and 5 in the morning. Diesel here was significantly cheaper than outside the park. Fire wood was affordable and of a good quality.

      Diesel at Askham was expensive the last time we bought there. Nowadays we just fill in the park.

    Thanks, looks like a fantastic little spot. The private campsites look really well set up, and that kitchen area is so useful!! Loved the idea of the hide at night, nice to do some game viewing out of the sun too!! 🤩👍 Thanks for sharing this

      The hide was great, that was our favourite feature of the site. We prefer private campsites when practical, glad this option is available at Nossob.

    Good review. We were there at the same time. At 4:50 our Charcoal Ford Everest and Echo Kavango with tent is in the middle of the frame. We got there from Twee Rivieren after first doing the Leeudril 4x4 trail, because we wanted to stick to the check in time specified on the booking. My tip if you're booked in the general campsites: don't do that because no one else does. Everyone leaves as early as possible from wherever they are coming from and take up the best campsites. We got the absolute worst one with no shade whatsoever. We moved the next day when someone else left. We took a walk to look at the private campsites and I prefer the general ones. Except for the one we were in first, they have better shade and are much closer to the pool and hide.

      Cool that you were there at the same time. It was amazingly green this season, apparently even more so after we left. The general camp sites looked really nice. Getting to camp early is definitely good for campsite selection. I was impressed at how people were packed and ready to leave Twee Rivieren at the crack of dawn. We are not early risers so we're almost always getting to camp late in the day with sightseeing along the way.
      The hide at Nossob 👌🏾!
      Thanks for the feedback. Hope you had a great experience.

      @@TravelGigolo It takes us between two and three hours to pack up camp, but we had to make a plan not to get the worst campsite at Mata-Mata so we packed up some of our kit the night before we left Nossob. That was the night the big storm came through, and all the water in the roads stretched our travel time so we still got to Mata-Mata late. We were lucky to get a decent site with OK shade and pitched light so we could move next door the next day to a great site.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We also try to pack as far as practical the night before leaving. Usually helps, but waking up early is our nemesis 😄. We had rain on our final day when we were leaving the park, from Twee Rivieren. Guess we missed the storm. I can imagine that the rain made things difficult. Drainage has not been planned well it seems, probably due the infrequent requirement for it.

      @@TravelGigolo We have a four and six year old and they wake us up early. Fortunately I'm an early riser too. I think the amount of rain that fell in a short space of time was just unusual. There were long pools (dams) in the road all along the route to Mata-Mata, a lot of sand speed humps where the water broke through the graded berm on the high side of the road and a tree fell over across the road too. We got there just after it was removed. Seems like they had even more rain in January.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, must have been quite a sight. The park was already rather green, so I can imagine it would have been unusually lush after all the rain.

    We just booked the last available camp sites at these private camp. So thanks for the information. On my previous trip we were pitching camp at the then only regularly camp sites. When hearing a nearby commotion, we investigated. It turned out that these campers found a beautiful fat puff-adder underneath an ammo box. The campers turned out to be friends from my own town. I still cannot understand how this fat snake crawled underneath a flat ammo box. Obviously the snake was not there when they pitched camp during the early afternoon. Just when the girls got their breath back, we found a second puff-adder underneath another ammo box. The second fat puff-adder with the fatter tail turned out to be a female.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! We saw numerous puff adders on our recent trip but fortunately not amongst out gear. We had a wonderful viewing of a cape cobra though on the edge of the campsite.

      @@TravelGigolo As promised, I went to this camp site. We booked the last camp site available, but getting there, the occupancy was les than 75%. We saw less antelope than normal because of all the grass and water everywhere. But the cats made up for it.

      There were also several empty camp sites when we were there recently although they were fully booked. Seems there were several no-shows, not clear what's happening.

      @@TravelGigolo In your video you mention that the campsite is pre-assigned at the booking stage, is this the case as my booking shows "site will be allocated on arrival"?
      Do you have a preferred site number?

      @TravelGigolo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul. I don't remember the campsite number unfortunately, but if you can ask for a site that's on the fence. We got the campsite number when we got to reception. It had clearly been assigned before our arrival.

    What was the cost of the private camps compared to general? Also a question on the rooftop tent - does it make getting out on game drives a chore, packing up each time?

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Private camp was R715 per night for 2 people. The general camps were R360 per night for 2 people.
      We prefer to use a ground tent generally and a rooftop tent only if we are in a hurry to set up (e.g. nighttime arrival at camp, or raining), unfenced camps, or single night stay. Depending on your RTT setup it can be fairly quick to take it down.
      I did an episode on that as well th-cam.com/video/gzYF8rkrqU8/w-d-xo.html

    Hi. For game drives, do you need anything special?

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, you can do game drives in a normal vehicle on the South African side of the park. All the roads are dirt roads but there is no mud. Sometimes there is sand but it's not necessary to have a 4x4.
      There are some roads that are 4x4 but these are off the main roads. The Botswana side has deep sand and requires 4x4.
