Getting a chainsaw running again after its been sitting for years

  • Pulling a chainsaw out of mothballs and getting it to run again is not just a simple 'put-in-gas-and-start-it-up' type. Here are the steps needed to get it running in perfect shape (at least from a mechanical perspective). Example here is a Stihl MS-210C that has been sitting in mothballs for years, thought to have a cracked gas tank. Turns out that's not the case, so this thing has a second chance at life. Your chainsaw models will vary, but the procedures here are identical.

    I had done everything you did except for pouring fuel in the cylinder. I cracked up laughing at the end of the video when you did NOT start your saw. Then I went out and poured fuel in cylinder, cycled a couple of dozen times. Re-installed the plug. After close to a dozen pulls, it fired right up, awesome, thanks!

    So you didn't clean the plug or put a drop of oil on the plug threads before reinstalling, let alone maybe clean the plug or replace it. Someone clearly over torqued the plug when they previously installed it. Then you did nothing with the carburetor, maybe spray some carb cleaner in the throat! Useless video!

    • @cd9374

      No big difference, 50:1 is just used to meet EPA standards

    • @DavidSmith-lr6qx
      @DavidSmith-lr6qx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there’s no big difference, why do they make two different mixtures. I have one on my table now that someone ran 40:1 mix in it, It’s now junk. Too much oil fouled the plug and filled the muffler full of oil and probably ruined the rings, I’m not sure because I haven’t gotten that far into it yet.

      First, when you put the choke all the way down, pull until you hear a sputter. Then move the choke up. If you don’t do it this way it is guaranteed to flood. Second, don’t leave gas in it when it’s gonna be sitting. It will gum up the carb and it will really give you a hard time about starting.

    Thank you! My saw hasn’t had a lot of use and is relatively new but sat with gas for about 5 years and wouldn’t start. I thought I was going to have to pull and clean the carb which intimidated me having never done that. Added fresh fuel and a bit to the cylinder and after about 5 pulls with the choke it fired up and is running well.

    Give the guy a break. His starting method of an old chainsaw, after being left with fuel in the tank and carburetor for an extended period of time, is no worse than the poor use of grammar and sentence structure in many of the comments here.

      Some models flood easy. I have 2, one starts on the first pull, and the other on the 2nd pull, unless you flood it. Then you just pull it 4-5x with no choke or throttle.

    Never use pump gas.

    • @DavidSmith-lr6qx
      @DavidSmith-lr6qx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s ok to use pump gas as long as either it’s non ethanol or you don’t leave it sitting for long periods of time. The ethanol will eat through the carb.

    • @rogerbritton7100
      @rogerbritton7100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve been using premium pump gasoline for twenty years. Use ethanol free gasoline and don’t forget to mix in the oil.

      @@cd9374 Right. 40:1 works just fine. Smokes a bit more, but extends life of equipment. I never ever use 50:1 in any of my 2 stroke cycle stuff.

    Didn't work with either of my big old Partner's a 7000 Plus and a R420, after being dry stored for a few years, they wouldn't pull over before adding 2T as a fuel and as an upper cylinder lubricant and they were no different afterwards, in fact adding the mixture in the upper cylinder made them marginally worse.
