      @@Iliketomakestuff I built off of your plans for the first cart. I do remember modifying it a bit when we were building it, because I felt it needed some modifications for weight. Since then I have modified it again to handle way more weight. It is a great concept to start with just needs the base modified to handle weight and roll easier.

    For your organising wall two things come to mind: pegboards and French cleats. The latter was extensively used by both Paul Jackman and Frank Howarth in the past but of course required building a whole bunch of custom storage trays / boxes / shelves. You can also maybe combine both. In the recess there's maybe space for some enclosed area you could put some kind of door in.
    That said, just building a Clamp Champ Wall of Fame would also be quite cool ;)

    Flexible in terms of options, and can change with your needs. Also, you can tie the cleats into the frame behind, rather than just the plywood.

    Nice work, Bob and company. Two comments…
    First. Your sponsor today, and the pitch you did for them is probably the best sponsorship I’ve ever seen on a TH-cam woodworking / DIY channel. So many people turned to channels like this during the pandemic. And far too many of us suffer from the effects of the last 2.5 years. I’m getting the help I need. And I encourage anyone who reads my comment that thinks they even might possibly need help to reach out. It’s a sign of strength to admit when you need help.
    Second. This is going to sound a bit trite, but this feels like a perfect canvas for a French cleat system. Put up the cleats then you have unlimited ideas for flexible storage that can change with your needs.

    A much needed tidy up for the shop! The cubby hole in the middle seems like a perfect place to put in some slide-out shelves/trays where you throw all the smaller offcuts into bins by rough size. This way you have most of your wood all in one go-to spot. As for the rest of the wall space, I'm also team french cleats, but perhaps try out some 3d printing for the tool/consumable holders. Would be an interesting segment if you could find existing designs by others, print them, try them out and try to iterate on them to make them yours.

    I'd say drop by Ikea if you got one nearby and grab a few of the SKÅDIS hookboards and a half dozen bags of hooks then mount those to it. I did this with my model making table (using a PC gaming table with a frame ) but adding them to the back of the frame and hanging all my tools off it. Its pretty cheap and since the hooks arent fixed you can consantly re-adjust all the tools, plus make your own hooks if needed with 5mm bar for larger items (like big clamps etc). For the alcove, maybe build in small shelves on removable pegs (like a lot of furniture has) so you can store tapes, glue, brushes etc on it.
    I love storage items and this one rocks while staying essentially rather minimal in physical space. Well done, sir!

    12:30 I think it would be cool if you added a table that folds out from the side so you can put pieces of wood down while your not using it at the moment so when you go to work on it, you don't have to worry about misplacing the wood that you need for that part of the project. And on the smaller section, you could put hooks on it to hang tool boxes or something like that. There are endless possibilities.

    the nook on the side is an obvious spot for some built in or adjustable shelving. looks like the perfect size for glue, paint, finishing supplies, gloves, rags, ect. especially if you combined that with a clamp wall on the larger surface, you would be grouping commonly used tools for similar tasks near each other.

    I really like what Jason @ Bourbon Moth did with his clamp rack. He not only stored a lot of different sizes of clamps, but he also made a mini "store" for all of the consumables like glues and such so that he could buy it all in bulk and then just grab items from there as needed rather than running to the store whenever he got low. If I were to build this storage rack, I would definitely fill up that blank space the way Jason did! (He also did something very similar to hold his whiskey which I thought was funny)

    In the notch you could hang some bars like a shower curtain rod look ( close at the top and further away toward the bottom) to hang long clamps on. I also use a plastic drywall mud pan screwed to the wall for my small tiny clamps.
    Thanks for the video.

  • @ericness9660
    @ericness9660 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would add a French cleat system. You can build a holder for just about anything, you can easily rearrange your shelves to Tetris more things onto the wall, and if in the future you replace/upgrade a tool you only need to replace one of the mounts. I saw one mount for a cordless sander with all its various sandpaper grits, anytime you need to sand something you just lift the mount off the cleats and carry the whole thing like a toolbox over to your project.

    In real production shops you can eliminate all of that extra by reducing your product lines or making things that maximize design and material in your products. Cut off areas, organized or not means inefficient shop flow. Eliminate by streamlining will even help air quality. Strength of material is also important: cut all those 2/4s into 1/1s and saved big on lumber. Wood is much stronger than you think. Create 18” right-triangle gussets for your corners and eliminate the melamine. Add peg board maybe if you got to have “nice” looking stuff. None of that makes $$$ in a production shop. Lean and mean. For personal shops - make it exactly as you wish! Make it awesome and look nice. It’s all taste and style.

  • @topsniper99

    I imagine in the part that has the three walls, you could put sandpaper in, maybe even a holder for rolls of sandpaper strips so you can tear it off for smaller sanding projects. Also, you could do bit and screw storage there, maybe even have like a row of screws with bits for those screws near them on like a magnet strip so they aren't hidden away in a storage case with other bits you don't need. You could even do like storage for your drills and drivers there, in my head I'm thinking like the gun wall from Men in Black where you can choose your drill, the bits you need, and possibly even the screws all in one place lol. Lastly, I think keeping maybe the things you use to break down plywood or boards on the cart would be the most convenient, like any track saws are kept there, circular saws, and even hand saws.

  • @OIFEagle
    @OIFEagle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    definitely a French-cleat system but include a fold-down table.
    But with all that lovely real estate, it would also look good with a nice mural and artistic design on it.

  • @JimBloggins1
    @JimBloggins1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, couple of notes;
    The first joints you showcased could've been made far stronger and cheaper by using a half-lap glued joint, eliminating expensive screws and creating a joint stronger than the pocket screws could ever be. A dado set or some time on the table saw would easily facilitate such a joint.
    Melamine is not quite what you described, it's actually just the plastic coating on what we call chip-board or a well known brand name for the substrate is K-3. Melamine can be a coating on many substrates, I use melamine on 19mm and 16mm plywood for cabinet manufacturing.
    A simple rail for clamps is what we use in our shop, clamp the clamp to the rail. For bar clamps, holes that enter a vertical cavity about 24" in height can hold the clamp upright safely. Though extra weight needs to be considered as bar clamps are quite heavy.

    Ideas for the 'wall'......
    1. Lay out a rough 'tape measure, vertically on the right end, so you can take out a piece from the storage bin and immediately find out whether it's too small for what you're building.

For the side, long tool storage is obvious, like bar clamps but don't forget straight edges and tools to lift sheet stock. Also things like gloves. And something to mark lumber with like a wax pencil.... Thanks Bob!

    I would say, considering what I've seen you use the most either french cleats or pegboard. Mostly because it can be reconfigurable. Lotta people have said French cleats which are always great, because things tend to get less and less organized over time as your needs shift. Making it great to be able to shift your storage easily with them. Might also consider splitting the far left sheets section vertically (maybe put a horizontal divider 30 inches from the bottom) to utilize some of the wasted space at the top.

A modular wall system with multiple modules or bays that can slide on and off the wall and lock into place and be removed easily. I think that would really be a fun and useful side project as well as a great use of space and flexible which would allow you to change your mind.

      That sounds awesome, If he wants to stay in the Dewalt line, I think There are some tough system shop shelving units that integrate nicely with their boxes and he would definitely be able to design some cool stuff around that

      @@vincepopo7497 I like that idea or really even something more open source the packout system was just the first commercial example that came to mind. But regardless I think something like that fully fleshed out and DIY would allow it to be changed if you don't like it and not have to undo everything you just did.

    That was super cool.
    The thing I kept seeing was in the "inwards" area.
    I feel like you can make some deep shelves there to put tools, nails and things related to project that would use those sheets.
    I mean if your able to get power to it, maybe even a small computer, so that you can check the plans of what it is your working on.
    A mini-portable Work station :)

    French cleats would give a lot of flexibility for storage and allow for easy rearrangement as needs change.

    For fun, I'd use the little alcove in the side of the rack as a charging station for your batteries styled after a Borg Regeneration Alcove.

    French cleats are the way to go for the flat sides of the rack. Interchangeable and customizable forever

    I like the idea of pegboard, but If you do add hooks and things to the pegboard I would also add shelves. Shelves that are at least as long as the longest hooks at waist and shoulder level with generously rounded corners would add more storage BUT more importantly make a visible/physical deterrent for walking too close to the hooks and goring yourself on them. Probably a good place to keep clamps, fasteners, and adhesives too.

    Use the hang wall for the claps and stuff. In the alcove I would put all your varnishes, wood fillers, etc. Looks good dude. PS maybe even put it on wheels.

    It would be really cool to see a french cleat system with different attachments that allow you to organize tools and consumables and other misc stuff on those walls! Allows for an array of storage options and you can remove an entire container to bring to a workstation if need be!

    Definitely interested in making one of those myself. Currently my storage is "wherever the board/sheet lands....". A clamp rack is always good..... can even be the "Clamp Champ Clamp Rack"...

    Great timing on this video because I'm in the middle of trying to design the same thing for my shop. I've been using Frank Howarth's model, but this is giving me some great ideas for modifying it.
    Just an echo of the comments below, but I'm in agreement with using French cleats for a more customizable storage solution on the sides of the rack.
    Thanks~!

    Love the video Bob! For an idea on that newly built rack, I was thinking perhaps having some simple trays to hold all of your different screws. Sort them by size and perhaps have them hanging down via two metal tracks?

    Good job Bob. I was thinking maybe put french cleats on the largest part which would then allow multiple options. Also shelving possibly on recessed section or more clamp holders

      French cleats was my thought too, if it wouldn't make it too unbalanced.

    If I was making this I’d be adding stuff that I would use in conjunction with these materials. Stuff like the circular saw I use for breaking down sheets, several tape measures and maybe a white board or clipboard clip to hold a cut list. Maybe a laptop shelf for viewing digital plans

  • @patrickschardt7724

    Add some weight bearing hooks, and small shelves to the sheets.
    French Cleats would also work as would CNC pegboards

  • @ferky123
    @ferky123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Take the side to your CNC and make it into a pegboard so that you can rearrange tools easily as you get more of them.
    A few things that I would do differently is that I would have built the sides so that the cross pieces could be a solid piece on the front and back. Also the top could have just been a rectangle.

  • @kakashie950
    @kakashie950 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was a bit surprised you didn’t go with peg board sides. Way more modular because you can easily put holds/bars/hooks whatever you can think of to hold all manner of clamps, tools, glues, etc.
