That place they fell into I believe is called a Dictionary. It’s a place where all the models used in a game can be found, from objects to NPCs. Also, I did the exact same thing when Caine did THAT. Just… stunned, broken silence.
It’s probably a test map if what I think you mean by dictionary the models are loaded before hand and teleported but by there being 2 of the bandit boss it would have to be a test room

It's the best for everyone... if they started bringing NPCs to the circus there would be a point where Caine would not be able to perceive who is real and who is not, so he could end up erasing someone by mistake.

Actually I'm surprised you didn't notice but jax actually cares a lot about them, and he hates seeing them get abstracted, you can also see at the end his expression when they talked about the funeral, hence why he didn't show up, he tries to forget about the abstraction as quickly as he can so he doesn't go insane and abstract himself, and him also bothering everyone often is to just keep them stimulated, for example your sibling might be bothering you so often, but when they're gone it just becomes very lonely, so yeah jax is just hiding it all in.
