- Im passing on my solo camping tips for beginners from what i have learnt over so many years of camping alone.
Safety is the number one tip you need to cover before going camping on your own.
For beginners, it is really important that you are well prepared before you go, so you can enjoy your solo camping experience.
It's advisable to gain as many solo camping tips as you can before you try solo camping alone.
The solo camping tips i pass on, will help you to get started on your first camping trip with your 4WD on your own. So you can have a safer and more enjoyable experience.
I have been solo camping alone for many years.
If you are setup for solo camping, they can be an amazing experience.
When it's just you all alone in the bush, and no one else around.
But, you really need to be a lot more prepared for camping alone, compared when you camp with other people.
Provided you carry out a number of safety precautions before you go.
When you are planning out a solo camping trip.
Your safety needs to be at the top of the list and carry the right spares for your 4WD.
The safety tips i provide, can help you get started with solo camping and with your 4WD.
Camping alone isn't for everyone, it does take some getting use to.
When you're solo camping, you have no one else to fall back on if something goes wrong.
It is really important that you plan out your solo camping trip, not only with what camping gear you take, but for you spares for your 4WD as well.

How often do you go camping on your own?
Great page Tim, very helpfull for all 4x4ers and campers.
Just another tip Tim, should you be middle of no where...leave your CBs on scan with the volume UP (uses near no power and its silent until picks someone up) so should there be someone out there calling for help in an emergency, youll hear the call out..even if its uhfs max distance of only 6 -7kms..
We do this with all of our 4x4 groups CBs, as all the guys travelling with us are serious 4x4ers, so we use AM/SSB CBs for significantly further distances around the 20-30kms on AM...and 50-60kms on SSB.
We still have uhfs, but leave on continous scan to hear whats going on around you.
Additionally, CBs will work in heavy storm cloud conditions unlike Sat phones and PLDs.
Dialing 112 allows you to use any of the phone networks around if you for emergency even if your own network has no signal..👍

I solo camp/4wd almost eveytime. I apply almost all those tips but I'm so glad you mentioned this point at 8:08 , the single best piece of advice if everything has gone pear shaped. Another great video Tim, thanks for sharing.

I too solo camp. It’s an utterly liberating feeling only very few can handle.
Great video and great advice. I love solo camping, it’s mainly what I do, be it 4WD or motorbike. I love getting away from the crowds but if I end up amongst others I find people tend to approach me more for conversation when alone rather than if I’m in a group and that is how some great friendships have been made.

Another good video Tim. I hike and 4WD solo. When I go 4WDing I take my back pack with all the gear I would if I was hiking. That way if some disaster happens with my vehicle, I can ditch it and hike out. Other gear I would add to your list Tim are a chain saw and axe. These are especially important if going solo. As you know in the High Country trees always fall over the tracks and they help making a campfire too.

My wife and I have done a bit of solo vehicle travelling in the Eastern end of the high country and a trip across the Simpson, and we always carry a Garmin Inreach mini.
Satellite text communicator, SOS for emergencies and spot tracker all in one. Family at home can follow where we are on a personal web page.

Yep, the mind games do come along once in awhile. Especially with all the wildlife at night, grunting, scratching around your camp, etc. But, something about solo camping, it is very relaxing in every way. Absolutely love it.

Yeah, it takes some time thats for sure to work out what the different animal noises are at night.
Koloa's, deer, and a few others make some pretty scary noises when you hear them for the first time.

Awesome video as usual. Great points. I like to scan the UHF channels to see who is about and if they are on the same track. Also there are many repeaters in the high country that can extend your uhf 150km+. I'm also a fan of the sat phone in case you need assistance but it's not life threatening. I.e breakdown. Definitely the mind games come into it! Nice one

I've been doing solo travels (touring, camping, trekking, packrafting, skiing) for years, and love it - best way to connect with nature! I agree 100% on the PLB! My PLB has been with me for 7 years, never triggered, but always within reach.
I want to suggest an addition to your hiking backpack: emergency nutrition. Carbohydrates keeps your body and mind energised and prevents exhaustion, especially in dire situations. A couple of fast digestible carbohydrate types you can keep permanently in your grab bag/emergency backpack for months, even years, are: raisins (70% fructose and glucose) and "sports energy gel" (glucose syrup). The latter typically comes in 100 ml squeeze bags (each ca 250 kcal, 1000 kJ), citrus or other fruit flavour, sold in sports stores. Buy a generous amount of each, and keep them in your pack or 4x4 - even for years - until you may need some instant energy, in an emergency. Cause you never know...

Great tips Tim. I have those all covered plus a GPS locator for vehicle that family can track my location on a map on an app on their phones anytime and anywhere. Plugs into the OBDI port and uses a yearly Aldi SIM card but does not need phone coverage. PLB a must. Got solo travel covered. Food, water, first aid and spares. Full recovery options covered. It takes a lot of preparation, planning as you say.

Great vid Batesy. I think you are dead right about carrying tools. I've been a bit complacent of late to be honest. My older 4wd ('97 GQ) I used to always carry a decent complement of tools. My new 4wd (7yo D-Max, bought from new) I've never carried tools. But in hindsight I probably should - they don't take up much room and may save my bacon. Thanks for the reminder mate.

Something sadly lacking especially in recent days Batesy...Common Bloody Sense !!! People think I am mad but for many many years I carry a sleeping bag and a thick wool blanket in my ute...even for trips on the Hume Freeway to Sydney. As you say you just never know when something may come in handy !! Bloody cold and wet here in Mansfield mate...great rain but it is so boggy underfoot I would not even attempt a drive in the paddocks at my place at the moment...going to be a ripper spring !! Solo camping isn't for everyone but, if you're up for it. It's can be one amazing experience.

Great video, ive finally set my BT50 up for solo camping, have 100l of water storage, awning, winch, quality tires, 2x fridges, 100ah of lithium battery and 350w of solar on the roof, spare cv's and belts, tools, electric tools and electric chainsaw, took two years to get the car to where it is but its now a very capable and comfortable

Hey mate, just found your channel the other day and have been off work crook, so I've watched about 3/4s of your videos in the last 2 days. Really enjoying your style of video and the info you share.
Just wanted to let you know that with regards to mobile phones calling emergency services is exactly the same whether you dial 000 or 112. Your mobile phone (as long as it's not over 20 years old) will access any network available to connect your call no matter which network provider you pay. This happens when you dial 112 or 000.

Thanks for the tip on the idler pulley. Have the ZD30. Love my Patrol. Do a lot of solo camping when prospecting. I love it but miss my Wife. She loves being out in the remote Far North Queensland but getting the time off is the issue.

I love solo camping. When I was younger I used to go camping a lot but as I got older my mates all got too busy, then I just decided bugger it I’m going anyway so now I mostly solo camp. Touch wood, I’ve never had any problems with the car or the bush but as I get more adventurous I also get more careful and more prepared. This video reminded me to get some spare tie rods to keep in the ute just in case.

Been doing solo for years. Scariest experience about thirty years ago. Camped out east of Carnarvon in West Australia. Total darkness and I hear gun shots off in the distance. Roo shooters out doing their thing. I went from total blackout to every light I could find on in about two seconds. Bright lights, loud music, the who shooting match.

Another really good video lots of good advice but one of the problems I have found in the WA bush there are lots of places that just do not have any trees larger than a good size bush so there is no where to winch off. keep up the good work regards

First trip solo camping out remote WA on a motorbike.... 500km from Perth off road about 100km, dropped bike and broke angle. camped night on side of track, felt vulnerable and mind games was something I learnt about. Lucky I had a quick shifter so I was able to ride into Midland hospital next day. Was a learning experience, I learnt about pain. However made me a stronger camper.

But, to be out on your own and you get injuries, is sure going to test out your survival skills.

Just camped alone for 4 nights to mildura. No one was at any camps. At night, alone your hearing is an acute as a blind mans. Still great to be out, country is so green.

Im still pretty new to solo camping with my 4x4 but one thing Ive had to deal with is hoons and bogans in the area. I think the best thing is to try and ignore it as if you go saying something you dont know if they will turn violent. Ive only had one heavy rain situation so far but the awning did a great job to keep me dry and as I sleep inside my Pajero I had no issues with my bedding getting wet. Im slowly getting ready to head out further for a couple of nights and can not wait.

It is a shame when you come across not behaving well in the bush. You are doing the right thing by not approaching them. You just never know who you are dealing with.
Taking down car rego numbers is a good thing and report what happened to authorities when you come back out.
Thats the go when starting out on a few solo trips, just go slowly, until you become more comfortable.

@@timbates4wdadventures Hi Tim. It hasn't always been campers that have caused issues, more often than not it's visitors to the area. Last night there was a party at the camp ground which was annoying but I guess you get that when the spot is accessible by anyone even with small 2wd cars. The camp site I intended to go had a large mud hole blocking the trail and being solo without a winch or tracks I decided to leave it be and opted for a better known site. Not again on a weekend.
Just starting out on the solo stuff, need a bit more gear for more remote camping. Music on a Bluetooth speaker is great for the mind games.

Ive set the back of my Pajero up with a bed so I sleep inside it where I can anyway. Works a treat and so easy even on long trips when you need a sleep by the side of the road. Plus you can lock the doors from the inside so your nice and secure.
The last time I went camping was 8 years ago in year 9 camp. I want to get away from the city for a while and see a night sky full of stars while surrounded by nature. I don’t have my own car so I’ll have to wait til then

Plb is great, but i do hunting in the high country , and find the garmin inreach invaluble from getting weather reports, satellite text and email, and tracking back to your designated contact at selectable intervals, plus sos button for emergency, must have in opinion for remote work solo or not

My first alone camping trip was in wonnangatta was out there for 4 weeks I forgot to tell my parents where I was going so they sent out a search party for me lol it was good on them though from that day I always tell them I even find some service and I send them the map on what I'm doing and stick to that track

I love solo camping, thought I get bored but it was the opposite, i kept busy gathering wood,prepping food ,exploring the area ,keeping that fire cranking and with a few ales and my fav tunes i cant get enough of solo camping , so peaceful ♥️👍🍻

Funny story, my interest in solo camping got its start when I was homeless & living out of my car. Having nothing but nature to "entertain" me appealed far more than I thought it would (could have done without the hunger ;) ). Definitely an extra layer of safety needs to be factored in as a woman solo camper, though. So far, it's been well worth it!
Yeah, once solo camping bites you. There's no stopping then.

a gun
first aid
plenty of beer

And I'm only a sheila!
So I guess there's something to be said for not driving like a total bloody galah, or being one.

I don't know if you spend much time on camping/touring videos, but 'solo female' camping/touring is becoming quite the meme in the UK, Europe, USA & Canada ... and when I first saw it all I could think was 'So what?' because of course we Aussie sheilas have been doing it forever, so it's not worthy of note -- any more than 'solo male' camping ... but then, a bloke would never be so pathetic as to think it needs its own label.

Why is Garmin inrech Minni not in your recommendation?
There "cheep" and you will never be out of range, and if you need a rescue the have your location with in 2 meters and they will know what is the problem.
Or simply send a text to your mechanic to come out with the spere you need.

Only reason i didn't mention it in my list, is because i just don't have one. The PLB that i have would be the minimum you would want. I have had my PLB for about four years now.

I don't know of any new map books, as the tracks can change so quickly from one week to another.
Either the Parks Victoria website or as you are already doing, by calling the Parks Vic office in the areas you are planning to go into.
I still do that for up to date track and river information. I have always found them a great help for that info.

Emergency 112 (or 000) will not work if there is no mobile coverage! It can use another network if your carrier has no coverage and another (usually Telstra) has coverage. It can also be used from a locked mobile, but only when there is mobile coverage. It does not work via satellite from a normal mobile. If you are going remote, use a sat phone. Do the research BEFORE you get stuck.

You have SOS in the top right hand side of your phone screen.
From the first aid courses i have done, they have all said that 112 will work provided you have SOS on your phone screen.

I've camped and toured Australia for years,l do go with a crew sometimes but find it a hassle if theres one that you don't get on with. Best to travel solo and meet up at campsites or towns at certain times. As for the bogey man l sometimes see their white teeth when they smile when you show them beer,l also like to leave some tricks for the bogey man just in case he wants some of my gear.Get rid of the bogey man.😁😁😁

Probably not a bad idea to bring it if it’s all carried in the car correctly ect, even for something like if you hit a roo and need to euthanise it

The wild dog thing isn't something i have ever had an issue with. Best at night time, just make sure all of your food is packed away inside your 4WD, and that way you don't give them a reason to come into your camp.
I have sure woke up in the morning and found dog prints around my camp, but its keep the food and scapes out of sight and out of mind.

I camp alone, carry a knife and rig up a trip line around the tent. Then I sleep in a swag 20m away. Sadly I haven't been attacked so I haven't got any "kills".

I've been thinking about a solo camping/4wdriving trip for a while now. My biggest concern is when it gets dark and the mind starts playing games with ya. Shouldn't have watched those horror movies in my younger days....lol
You get used to it. When I first went out solo, I had every fucking horror movie I've ever seen run through my head. Once you get used to it you can just sit in the pitch black and relax.
