- "Giovinezza" was composed by lawyer and composer Giuseppe Blanc in 1909. Originally a Turin university graduation song, it became popular among Italian soldiers during World War I.
"Giovinezza" was the unofficial national anthem of Italy between 1924 and 1943. Subsequently (1943-45) it became the official anthem of the Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana, RSI).
After the capitulation of Italy in 1944, the Allies suppressed the hymn in Italy.
Because of its strong association with the fascist regime (indeed, verses 2 and 3 which are not sung here make reference to Mussolini) this song is still banned in Italy.
As a non-Italian, I feel not threatened by that melody. As a musician, I strongly oppose any kind of musical censorship and banning of songs. This is one of the catchiest tunes in history, with beautiful lyrics that are totally blameless. Distancing myself from all political connotations, I regard "Giovinezza" as a very good tune and I suggest you do the same.

I believe the Horst Wessel Lied was originally an older song, sung by the East Prussian Marines ( before WW1). Wessel took this song and put new ( Nazi ) words to it, re-naming it "DieFahne Hoch".

Why the reference to Alighieri?
That is Dante Alighieri. The transformation of Italy into a unified nation consisted not only in building a state, but also in “pensare l'Italia” (thinking Italy) as “an ethical substance.” This program was later claimed by Mussolini and his Fascist regime, and Dante
, in his mind, became a prophet of the totalitarian state. In practice, Mussolini sought to “dress Dante in a black shirt.” (Stefano Alberti).
A Dante scholar, and Mussolini’s minister for Education between 1922 and 1924, Giovanni Gentile made the study of Dante mandatory in Italian schools. The regime used the prestige of the Poet to cement its alliance with the Catholic Church (Lateran Treaty, 1929), to legitimize its colonial expansion in Africa, and to promote a triumphalist Italian culture.
In my opinion, Dante would have put Mussolini somewhere in his Inferno.
