Musical chemistry was far better with Taylor. It's good with Woody for sure, and his personality fits, but musically there is no question the Taylor years are far above the best stuff in Stones history.
When Mick Taylor played with the Stones, they really were the Greatest Rock 'n Roll band in the world. Especially live when you added Hopkins or Preston, Keys and Price. They were good with Brian, but were mostly a singles band. With Woody, they're more like a Stones' tribute band. But with Taylor they soared.
Taylor and Richards were the PERFECT match. Their work together on "Get Yer Ya Yas Out" was AMAZING.... I can listen to Dead Flowers and Winter all day long!!
I too credit Mick Taylor as THE elevating factor to the Stones during his tenure. I feel his leaving left a giant hole in the fabric of all following Stone's music. As a BAND, with Taylor, they became truly incredible and historic.
Mick Taylor made the stones a legitimate Blues rock band. I haven’t purchased a Stones record since he left! They should have treated Mick as an equal and given him more song writing credits that he deserved! Ron Wood is a nice guy but doesn’t compare to Mick Taylor’s talent level!
@guitarman430 the best albums they ever did were with Taylor ...my favorite being Exile on Main street ...but after he left they had some good stuff...Some Girls
The problem is, the Stones are a Rock'n'Roll band. The style Keith and Mick created makes their music timeless. Why should two of the best songwriters of Rock let a guy like Taylor write their songs, something Taylor could not do at all? Btw. Ron Wood is the far better player for the Stones, he has the talent to unterstand their music.
Taylor was the best musician they ever had. Brian was a genius but nobody was as good on a single insturment as Taylor was on guitar. The sound he added to the Stones was unique and it is the best thing they ever produced (even though I prefer the Ron Wood years). Just listen to the solo he plays on Cant you Hear me Knocking, Sway, Winter, Dead Flowers, Time Waits for no One... when it comes to music, these are the best things they ever recorded. Also, just check Taylor on stage with the band during 2012/13. Those are the best live versions from Midnight Rambler and is all thanks to him and the way he is playing - I mean, I love Ronnie and Keith, but they wouldnt be able to produce the same sound on stage as Taylor does.

Eric Clapton or Rory Gallagher were definitely capable of playing guitar FOR the band but only Ron Wood could have dealt with being IN the band at this point...
