  • Maria Callas performing the arias Tacea La Notte Placida and Di Tale Amor, from Verdi's Il Trovatore, live in Naples in 1951 under the baton of Tullio Serafin. This recording is from the Gli Anni D'oro Collection (Vol. I, 1951-1953) of live Maria Callas opera recordings. I find her voice to be in fine form here, with no sign of the wobble that was later introduced into her higher register. I'm just amazed by the control she has over her voice! Everything is exactly as she wants it to be. She is phenomenal.
I'm going to be uploading exerpts from live Callas recordings of Il Trovatore, I Puritani, Armida, Norma and Medea all recorded between 1951 and 1953. Hope you enjoy, and let me know if you have any aria/duet/ensemble requests!

Agreed. In her first (1950) Leonora she even adds 2 Eb6s in Tacea and a huge D6 in D’Amor Sull’Ali. I think in those years she was basically a true dramatic, but, miraculously, with great agility and an extension up to E6. Unfortunately, we all know what happened later (whether due to the weight loss, nerves or the fact that juggling wildly different tessituras all at the same time simply isn’t sustainable for more than a few years).

I think the 1961 must be a typo error. You must have meant 1951. Yes indeed incredible control in every register and steady pinpoint accuracy.

Callas was the greatest voice ever and it is pure happiness to listen to her vocal stunts. But Callas was much more than that. The attention braught to each detail is phenomenal. No one before or after her reached those heights. The famous"wobble" that came much later was only in her high register. How many soprtanos who were opposed to her wobbled through their medium and lower register (those are essential to make the characters come to life) but of course had brilliant top notes. Callas herself said that it is very easy to make a success by singing soaring top notes and swim trough the rest of the score. Something she never did and nearly all the others did and still do....

I've never heard true early callas. Simply astounding. All I can say is what happened?? She should have said duck being a supermodel I have a VOICE. Oh well that's what a viscous world, men, and vanity does. She should have lost the weight more slowly. Just amazing ere though.
