- Can you plant hydrangeas near black walnut trees? Well, maybe. It depends. Some types of hydrangea work ok with the juglone chemical that black walnuts emit. Other types don't work so well. Come with me and let's explore which kinds of hydrangeas might work near a black walnut tree.

I am SOOOO GLAD to know arborescens can tolerate the juglone and your Mini Mauvettes can handle the Juglone. So glad I stumbled on this because that's precisely what I (very hesitantly) planted beneath a black walnut tree for there's nowhere else for them to go. They were not at all happy in their containers. I don't think they'd survive much longer in them.
Thank you SOOO much for this video & calming my nerves!
As I said before I live in a forest . I kept losing hydrangeas due to various issues. I ended up planting my hydrangeas in containers. Perhaps you might want to give it a try. Your vison of hydrangeas behind that small deck can still be a reality.
Yes that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Just need to get some container soil and go for it!
Good morning Jenny. I’ve learned something new today. Thank you so much for this information!
Happy to help! 😁

Hello Jenny, i have a big walnut tree and planted a wonderful ramblerrose under the tree: she is called "Maria Lisa " and the thrives lush and full of blooms!
Good to know, thanks! I bet it’s beautiful!!! How much sun does it get?
@@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden a few hours morning sun and then filtered light through the canopy of the walnut tree.

I’ve had Hydrangea Petiolaris do well in large cedar planters with a trellis I built under a black walnut for 3 years now. When the walnuts fall in October I keep an eye on the planters and remove any walnuts that land in the planters.
I also tried Rhododenron PJMs a few years ago. It was suggested as s variety that was less susceptible to Juglone. The 4 directly under another black walnut did well for 3 years then boom. All 4 died within 2 months last summer. The remaining 3 were just like your hydrangeas. The one farthest from the walnut is doing well - the two closer are struggling with the one closest doing worse.
Yes, it's always such a learning curve, and so often, we have to just try it to see what works in our gardens. I've removed most of my hydrangeas from my black walnut areas, unless they're in containers. But the arborescens type so far are doing ok near the trees. We'll see how they do over time.

Oh no I just planted 2 really close to a black walnut. Guess I will have to move them. We started the tree from a nut and it's literally a twig right now. Will my hydrengea be okay for some time?
For a while, yes. You might want to put the hydrangeas into containers though.
Eventually that is.
Alliums do well around black walnuts
When you say you are going to baby them, what do you mean? What is your plan to overcome the juglon so you wouldn't have to move them? Would putting a lot of bio char in the soil help?
I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do when I said that! haha! probably my thought was to fertilize them (RoseTone) and keep the well watered. But since then, I've decided I'm going to dig all three up and plant them into large containers. That way I don't have to worry about the juglone at all and I can keep them happier.
So would you say that as long as they are out of the canopy of the tree, then they will be fine?
Um, I'm not sure. Some say 60', some say under the drip line. I've planted some about 40' away and so far so good.
I heard Y garden ( another wonderful TH-cam gardener) t Astilbes are tolerant of black walnut trees. They are also deer and rabbit resistant🦌🐇
Yes, astilbes are great - I have several in this garden. :-)
A simple solution, if you want to keep the hydrangeas in that location is to plant them in containers.
Yes, that's the plan I've come up with. Just need to get some container soil.
Can anybody comment if Chandler also produce that chemical
