I made a tincture of halved black walnuts when they were in the green stage last year, letting them sit for 6 months. After I started the tincture, I contracted Lymes disease. After the initial doxycycline round I went to a chiropractor who specializes in Lymes treatments. He gave me a tincture to take for a month, then off for 2 weeks and then again for a month. The main herb was green black walnut, followed by clove then wormwood. It is a rather expensive treatment developed by a famed Lymes doctor in the region. This helped me recover very well from the illness that had basically taken me out for the whole summer. I live in Wisconsin In a high Lymes area, and unfortunately got it again this year. I took the 14 days of Doxy again. I don't think I would ever leave that out despite trying to stay natural. And I immediately started taking my own black walnut and clove tincture. I was back to normal in just a few days.

If you’re in the woods a lot check out permethrin if you haven’t already. There is an all natural that’s similar but I can’t remember the name. I don’t like chemicals on my skin but I treat my woods clothes with permethrin and I go all up in the thick stuff, with pants tucked into my boots and shirt tucked in with thin long sleeve treated top, and I can come out of chigger and tick territory with no unwanted hitchhikers. It works great
We have these trees in one of our neighborhood parks. Last year, I saw a guy sitting on the ground hulling the walnuts & placing them in a lg bag. It turns out he was taking the walnuts & leaving the hulls. This year, I will be the one collecting some.😊
OH!! IMPORTANT POINT HERE! Not many plants like to grow near Black Walnut trees so if anyone is thinking of planting some saplings don't plant them near your garden or anything that you want to grow.

We have always used the hulls when they are green and rub the hulls on ringworm when the kids were growing up. It would kill/treat the ringworm faster than using iodine from the store..
The beauty of using it for dyeing wool it does not need a mordant! One less task. The varying colors are the different chemicals or minerals, such as a copper pot or iron pot. Adding ammonia etc. Fun to experiment
The best black walnut tree seedling I ever grew was from a big pile of walnuts that had been discarded to the edge of my property, the rotting husks evidently were the perfect growing medium.
"There's probably a lot of food we shouldn't be eating"....That made me laugh!! So so true!! We have a couple trees and darn, those hulls are usually loaded with worms so I haven't done much with them. When they first drop off the tree is doesn't appear to have worms, but I believe they get in there during the growing phase. I researched it years ago and can't really remember how that worked. Also, wear gloves if working with them - they stain big time!! This may be the year that I give it a go. I've always wanted to try it as a hair dye. (Yes....I'm still dying my hair - I want to stop and just go all grey, but haven't taken that leap yet! LOL) Great video as always! God bless!!

So I'll reply in a condensed version: Thankfully I dye my own hair so it's not as expensive. And really the only reason I was still dying it was because of my son. I'm an older mom and this kid continually laughs in his sleep. I asked him when he was about 4 or 5 yrs old if he ever had a nightmare. he said he did but wouldn't tell me what it was about. I finally got it out of him a couple days later - he said, "I dreamt that you decided not to color your hair anymore and your hair was all gray!". Found out last year my elderly neighbor had a walnut tree.A lot of trees thru out my town and people let them just fall from the trees.The squirrels and other animals do not touch them until the hauls rot away, then they will grab the nuts, I left all her nuts that was to high for me to reach, for the squirrels , they stayed on the ground until all the hauls had rotted and late in the fall the squirrels finally started to get them.
Thanks for that info! I've noticed a green hull here and there, and remnants of shells, but have yet to see a walnut fully intact in the yard. They may all be falling in the woods instead of in our yard along the telling where I've seen the pieces. The woods are very dense here and full of briars and poison Ivy, so I was hoping to avoid having to fetch them out of there.

I couldn't agree more. Be careful. I LOVE the smell of the green spring fruit. I only found it last year in West Virginia. My dog got covered in fleas and ticks. I put it all over him and he turned orange but boy, it killed every bug! I love them.

We planted 3 saplings out front and our neighbor wasn’t sure if they are pecan or walnut, so we planted them about 75 ft away from the raised beds in case they are walnuts. One of Mike’s friends from work brought in a bag of black walnuts, but nobody liked them. His friend said “ good, more for me!” I like that you feed it to your chickens. Yeah home made vinegars are really easy to make. I made 5 gallons of peach wine last year, it was awsome. Last month I went to draw off a quart of that peach wine and found that I now had 3 gallons of peach wine vinegar, also delicious. I made it without even trying. My wife was taking Apple cider vinegar every day but now she's been using the peach and likes it better. No waste. Nice pork marinade too.
I use peach scraps (peels and pits) to make vinegar and it always gets t he biggest SCOBY over any other vinegar I make. I currently have a batch of grape, blueberry and currant wine brewing, all fruit from my own garden

I have 3 black walnut trees and have wanted to do more with them. One year, near the end of syrup season, we tapped the trees. The syrup tasted like butterscotch. I tried to pickle green walnuts one year, but I didn't care for those, and once I tried to make a green walnut tincture but it was lost to the fridge, and I think I tossed it (maybe a labeling problem on my end). Maybe I missed it, but what time of the year would you collect the walnuts, right as they're falling or would last years walnuts on the ground now be okay? Thanks for the ways on using it - I think I'll give it a go in coffee that sounds delicious.
It’s interesting that you tapped the trees. It will be a long time before our trees are large enough to tap, but by then we’ll know if we have pecans or walnuts. Ours are only about 3 ft tall right now. They were given to us.
Interesting video, I love the unshelled walnuts that are for sale in most grocery stores in November and December. I don’t know if they are the “Black” variety, the shell is a kind of tan/beige. I would love to have a Black Walnut Tree. Supposedly, they once thrived as far south as South Georgia/North Florida USA. Our big “cash crop” nut in this area are Pecans. When I was growing up some of the locals would pay their annual property taxes with pecans they gathered in the Fall.

I had considered doing that but Patrick is very particular about not having ANY added flavors in his coffee and he can always tell, no matter how subtle, so I just add the powder directly to my mug, just a pinch
We have a tree 2 houses down, the squirrels enjoy them! I collected some years ago, but they all had little worms in - guess the alcohol would make short of them😅

I am interested in the resurch you found on using black walnuts hulls for warts. I recently made a tincture. Wondering if a paste is better for the warts.
While I know it is safe for chickens, I recommend looking it up for all animals as one person has said it is not safe for horses so this could mean it may not be safe for other animals

I think it would really depend on how you plan to use it. For me, oils are something I use topically and extracts made with other solvents I use internally
2 questions- you mentioned that black walnuts are a good source of iodine, so if someone is allergic to iodine in seafood, should they stay clear of black walnuts, too? Also, if the tincture is added to coffee, is it less effective? TIA
Not being a doctor nor an expert in iodine, I cannot say as there are different types of iodine and it is possible what comes from a plant product may be different so I suggest doing a bit of research into that
Green hulls are for parasite killing tincture, black hulls have the iodine properties. Soak green hulls in brandy for 3 days! Yes only 3 days... Srain and bottle for parasite use.

Curious...... Since this gets rid of parasites do you think that this would be good as an insect repellent & kill insects if sprayed on them? Thinking about making some with the peel/hulls with some Dawn dishsoap OR rubbing alcohol.
If you look to find any scientific research showing the hulls are a rich source of iodine please share because i couldnt find any. I think its a wives tale that they are a high source of iodine.
@@RainCountryHomestead that's not from what I've heard from herbalists specializing in internal parasites. I mentioned it because it's something they emphasize over and over. But it's easy to find the green ones, they're just fresher on the ground before they turn dark. I dont know why they say use the green hull for worms/parasites, but they do. The ones who specialize in worm formulations anyway.
@@anon0926 I think a tincture is usually made from the black walnut hulls when they are green. So you'd crack them open and clean them, and then make a tincture with the hulls with alcohol . I believe the mature hulls that are past green are also used for a purpose but I forget what. But it's a tincture that's made. You could also grind them to a fine powder and take it by capsule I imagine. As to dosage, it's a certain number of drops a day for 6 weeks, then a break and repeat. There is alot of material out there for paracite recipies with dosage and length of treatment. In fact, a book called The Cure For All Diseases by Hulda Clark has very good information on paracite cleanse particulars.

I have 3 black walnuts (little saplings) that I was thinking about pulling up, but now I think I’ll leave them alone and plant fruit trees somewhere else.
I have 3 black walnut trees and have wanted to do more with them. One year, near the end of syrup season, we tapped the trees. The syrup tasted like butterscotch. I tried to pickle green walnuts one year, but I didn't care for those, and once I tried to make a green walnut tincture but it was lost to the fridge, and I think I tossed it (maybe a labeling problem on my end). Maybe I missed it, but what time of the year would you collect the walnuts, right as they're falling or would last years walnuts on the ground now be okay? Thanks for the ways on using it - I think I'll give it a go in coffee that sounds delicious.

It’s interesting that you tapped the trees. It will be a long time before our trees are large enough to tap, but by then we’ll know if we have pecans or walnuts. Ours are only about 3 ft tall right now. They were given to us.

Interesting video, I love the unshelled walnuts that are for sale in most grocery stores in November and December. I don’t know if they are the “Black” variety, the shell is a kind of tan/beige. I would love to have a Black Walnut Tree. Supposedly, they once thrived as far south as South Georgia/North Florida USA. Our big “cash crop” nut in this area are Pecans. When I was growing up some of the locals would pay their annual property taxes with pecans they gathered in the Fall.

I had considered doing that but Patrick is very particular about not having ANY added flavors in his coffee and he can always tell, no matter how subtle, so I just add the powder directly to my mug, just a pinch
We have a tree 2 houses down, the squirrels enjoy them! I collected some years ago, but they all had little worms in - guess the alcohol would make short of them😅

While I know it is safe for chickens, I recommend looking it up for all animals as one person has said it is not safe for horses so this could mean it may not be safe for other animals

Are there any concerns with staining, of the skin when used topically, or of the teeth/mouth when taking internally?
I did notice my teeth getting noticeably darker so I stopped using it in my coffee on such a regular basis.

I think it would really depend on how you plan to use it. For me, oils are something I use topically and extracts made with other solvents I use internally
2 questions- you mentioned that black walnuts are a good source of iodine, so if someone is allergic to iodine in seafood, should they stay clear of black walnuts, too?
Also, if the tincture is added to coffee, is it less effective? TIA
Not being a doctor nor an expert in iodine, I cannot say as there are different types of iodine and it is possible what comes from a plant product may be different so I suggest doing a bit of research into that
Green hulls are for parasite killing tincture, black hulls have the iodine properties. Soak green hulls in brandy for 3 days! Yes only 3 days... Srain and bottle for parasite use.

If you look to find any scientific research showing the hulls are a rich source of iodine please share because i couldnt find any. I think its a wives tale that they are a high source of iodine.

@@RainCountryHomestead that's not from what I've heard from herbalists specializing in internal parasites. I mentioned it because it's something they emphasize over and over. But it's easy to find the green ones, they're just fresher on the ground before they turn dark. I dont know why they say use the green hull for worms/parasites, but they do. The ones who specialize in worm formulations anyway.

@@anon0926 I think a tincture is usually made from the black walnut hulls when they are green. So you'd crack them open and clean them, and then make a tincture with the hulls with alcohol . I believe the mature hulls that are past green are also used for a purpose but I forget what. But it's a tincture that's made. You could also grind them to a fine powder and take it by capsule I imagine. As to dosage, it's a certain number of drops a day for 6 weeks, then a break and repeat. There is alot of material out there for paracite recipies with dosage and length of treatment.
In fact, a book called The Cure For All Diseases by Hulda Clark has very good information on paracite cleanse particulars.
