Diggory Hadoke demonstrates the working parts of the Needham self-half-cocking hammer gun Patent 1544 of 1862 on a later centre-fire gun by J.V. Needham.
Don't see much info on Needham guns. In this episode you mention the 'take over' of J. V. Needham's 1878 hammerless self ejecting patents by W.W. Greener. As I understand the facts of the matter; Greener obtained the patents due to the death of Needham shortly after the patent was issued. My close friend inherited a 1878 J. V. Needham self ejecting under lever double gun marked as such, without any marking pertaining to Greener as would be the case for guns made by/ issued from Greener. This leaves me to believe that this gun was made by J. V. Needham before W. W. Greener's take over. Any thoughts on this.
Needham's business was taken over by Greener after JVN's death. His ejector was not quite the same as a Greener self acting ejector, so I would think that made by Greener. Greener continued to use the Needham name on lesser quality guns.
I did see an auction offering (Mitchell's, April 2022, lot#228) as a ' W.W. Greener -J. V. Needham patent ejector shotgun, rib engraved 'W.W. Greener 68 Haymarket, London & Birmingham, number 4 of a quartet, and clearly marked W W Greener on the right side plate. According to Graham Greener's archive, this gun was made in in 1898 employing Needham's patented ejector, though unable to name the buyer. Further; Greener produced 6000 units between 1881 -1890, and continued by special order until 1914ish. The description of this offering makes no mention of it being mark with the Needham moniker, hence my query on markings.
