Really like the loaded shroud. As a new gun at the time ,I bet he was showing that off to everyone.

I’ve got quite a collection of these by now. What I love almost as much as the various patents is the people that owned them. They were often bough by prominent people, lords, Marquises, politicians, peers of the realm etc.

Fascinating Dig. Thank you. Looked like the 12 bore had sections notched out of the barrels in front of the forend. Is that because the Damascus barrels were unsafe to shoot?
    Best, Donald B.

Yes, it was sold as a stock action and forend only, as the barrels were out of proof. When sold as such, the law requires the barrels be cut in this manner.

I have one made an 1865 and all of a sudden I cannot get the breach to open. I’m sure that it’s something very simple but I don’t want to try to force it and I’m concerned about taking it apart. Do you have any advice?

I’m curious about the cut out in the barrels.

Hi, the gun has obviously failed a barrel thickness survey by a Gunsmith & has been wisely made un- shoot able for safety reasons.

Guns sold that are out of proof have to be cut like this and sold as 'stock, action and forend only', which is public safety law. Shame, as many could be rescued with a bit of effort.
