Yeah, he's great! Enjoys himself and is very sweet.Guy doesn't hold himself back! He can hardly contain himself! don't know why they weren't a bigger deal than they turned out to be.So cool his dad called, Dad must be very proud!
That's a nice moment for Ian I'm sure. His dad was calling from from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada(where I live) where Ian spent his mid teens and where his dad continued to live. Especially touching since his dad would die a few years later from cancer. His dad is buried here so Ian does still have a permanent connection to Hamilton and as he has stated in many an interview, Hamilton and visiting Six Nations Reserve and the native friends he made here had a huge impact on him as a person and artist.
Add to that that Ian's mother died of cancer while he was a teenager in Ontario ... it surely left a huge mark on him .... I read some interviews of him talking about that... perhaps it explains some of his more complex lyrics and ideas
FLICKOFF1000 No, British. He was born in England and grew up there until his parents moved the family(minus an older brother) to Canada(Hamilton, ON). After his teens, he moved back to England and ended up forming The Cult there. I odn't think he ever ended up taking Canadian citizenship.
This is such a sweet and precious moment in time. So touching! Wish I could go back to my favorite decade. Watching this just gives me another reason to love Ian. His beautiful, charming smile melts my heart and sends me reeling! I could gaze upon this beautiful man-child forever!
This shows how Fuckin cool Joan was. Obviously she didn't listen to the bands music but she was cool enough to setup a call from Ian's Dad and she was cool to the band. Joan was a Class Act. And the Cult Still Kick Ass!
Billy pick up the phone:"i'm busy "lol The phonecall: "i love you too dad"...AWW,so sweet Ian!😍Not only they produce great music, they are so humble with a good sense of humor,i like that!L❤VE you guys!🎵🎶🎤🎸🥁
Absolutely THE COOLEST CULT moment ever!!!!!! Way to cool. Reminds me of my son, Ian. I love him like Ian's Dad loves him. No matter where or what they are doing.
espada9 Kid Chaos, the bassist in the Samhain t-shirt (he wore it throughout the 1988 tour, I saw them in San Diego opening for Billy Idol) is now in his final year at NYU's Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, subsequent to getting his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, all after conquering dyslexia. Sometime next year his new professional name will be Stephen Harris, M.D. Pretty cool!
Hey Valhalla that hits hard wish I had seen this comment. Was he a guest bassist or THE bassist either way I'm in late fifties my undergrad buddy went to NYU med from Wash. state but I was playing the album too much wow.
Oh on top of that I am talking to my best h.s. buddy again dyslexic I have all his letters. Doing great. I don't check Joe Jones that's just fake but this is mind blowing to a Cult 4 decade fan of you answer
@@kayeess9905 man, I miss those ages of 15-17. I remember there was a show on our local independent station (which became Fox) and during summer vacation on 1983 they had a national show called "Hot." It came on M-Th at 11 PM or so and it was the top 5 or 10 songs in the country that day. I distinctly remember was the first time I saw this awesome video of this female singer I absolutely wanted to look like and dress like! The video was "Borderline" and she was about to become an international superstar. After that my parents would have been asleep and I would sneak down at 11.30 every so often to watch Letterman. Nowadays I can barely stay awake when Kimmel or Colbert come on at 10.30 😂
@JoeJones-yx5be Yes! I have been a lot into Danzig (similar vocals and style, I guess), but the cult is still my favorite. I'm very conservative musically. Just dig those old gems all the time
I completely missed these guys in the 80s or whenever. They're freakin great! Energy, humor, intelligence, great songs! Cool looking.Ian's one of a kind! Love the guy!
I remember seeing the Cult in the late 1980's and thinking they looked and sounded like they should have been the House band for the movie "Lost Boys."
I love this recording! It is one of my favourites! However this recording is from 1987 not '88 as you said in your introduction about this post Ian2belle. It clearly states it at the end of this video...1987...
Crazy in 25 I almost had it but now gotta watch Carlin? And these gal fans LONG comments but read them can't SEE! The days. Can't think of a rock band.
Could be. This year he broke up a first row choking fight jumped off stage, and is persistent about looking into himself and passing what he learns to others
Is Joan holding up a book with Mother Angelica from EWTN fame at the 5:54 mark? Weird! Was she a guest with The Cult? LOL! What a trip that would've been.
**It's stunning how much their musical and physical image changed over a period of just 2-3 years! Watch and listen to music videos from 1985's "Love" album, and compare it with their very next album(Electric) and the following one(Sonic Temple).**
Their heavy metal sound and high energy was the sexiest of the pack. Local hair bands played their songs in the eighties in clubs and the dance floor was full of smiles and game. Up there with my favorite all time bands. Funny how music speed gets faster over time. This sounds so slow now. Same with Zep and Metallica. Remember when they were considered speed metal? It's so weird. Wish I had seen the Cult live back in the day.
I once met Joan Rivers. I told her how funny I thought she was and how much I admired her. She said "Back off, before I slice you up a treat with this stiletto." Just goes to show, you never know.
I heard these guys live at Leeds Uni in 1990. It's bizarre how studio they sound / sound here. I think there are very few bands that can do that. As I say, I heard them, never saw them. Listened outside the gig. You should never meet your heroes. :>)
Ian being competely adorable. Comes over as very shy & genuinely nice. "Love you Dad"-how lovely.
My Babies
Ian is definitely in my list of rock's most distinctive vocalists.
Yeah, he's great! Enjoys himself and is very sweet.Guy doesn't hold himself back! He can hardly contain himself! don't know why they weren't a bigger deal than they turned out to be.So cool his dad called, Dad must be very proud!

Michael Moniz Then, is he Canadian then?
FLICKOFF1000 No, British. He was born in England and grew up there until his parents moved the family(minus an older brother) to Canada(Hamilton, ON). After his teens, he moved back to England and ended up forming The Cult there. I odn't think he ever ended up taking Canadian citizenship.
+Michael Moniz Younger brother, actually...Ian was the oldest of the 3 siblings
Dudes, thank you sooo much for bringing up his Father/Mother's history, I had always been very curious about their history.
I was in the audience!! I remember waiting all day at Fox Studios to make sure I got in. Thank you for posting this!
That's Insane. Good Job.
2023 and still loving The Cult...
'25 now I'm with Ya just missed tour at Muckleshoot Washington State woo hoo
Look at that smile Ian has, my gosh, he could light the world.
He is lighting the world.
he's just lovely. totally authentic
I hear he's a Buddhist
Brenda Dillinger yes, when Ian smiles, it is prescious!
He still is. He might be a killer Rock God, but he still loves his dad. Aw...
He does light the world

He blushes,,, and has the most devastating beautiful smile
Verónica León Soffia Oh yes he's pure sweetness no doubt 🎤💕💕
He’s adorable. A rock star on stage, a down to earth, shy, Midlands lad.
Also radiates sweetness which his dad nurtured.his dad is a proud one!
I once heardd him say people don't wanna get in a fight with him cause he goes slightly wack, now I see why, he has to protect them teeeth!

Bigger Foot Yes Joan was a class act she was definitely a woman of the World miss her💔
She was. Woman of the world. Just played along with Ian’s dad, Robert, calling to wish Ian Happy Birthday. Bless them. And Ian even blushes...
I wasn't sure 100 percent I liked her till found this in what '25

I always thought Ian had the most gorgeous hair.... Luscious locks ... Gorgeous man...
Absolutely THE COOLEST CULT moment ever!!!!!! Way to cool. Reminds me of my son, Ian. I love him like Ian's Dad loves him. No matter where or what they are doing.

I stayed up late and snuck downstairs to record this on the VCR (no timer back then). I watched it over and over just because it was soooo sweet.
Same 😂. Imagine having to sneak for something as innocent as that. I think I was 17 at the time.

Ian is extremely talented and a genuinely nice person ! Love this band so much !!!!!
Ian is a great vocalist and the Cult are a superb band - especially the early stuff
Fabulous! One of the bands of my life!
You can't go wrong with a bass player who wears a Samhain t-shirt.
That would be Kid Chaos
Now Dr. Chaos, if you please...
@@MrGiorgioud "you guys wanna make some real motherfucking bass money?"

How freakin' cool is that!? Just got to see these guys a few weeks ago and they absolutely destroyed it!! GREAT BAND!!
Always loved Joan, such a cool thing to do; The Cult rocks.
I love Joan and so cool to see The Cult
i remember back in about '86> my best mate introduced me to the cult, and i introduced him to zeppelin, win win!

Super Kool that they covered "Steppenwolf" !!
"What is your name?"
"My name? Gee, I knew it this mornin'".
Jamie Stewart playing rythmn guitar for the Electric. Saw him play with the band in Oct 2013 for a few songs on the Electric revisited tour - love it!

Born to be wild. Not an easy song to cover. When it came out it was immediately one of the hardest rockers ever.
So cute. It's sexy how respectful he is to his father.
I am glad Ian's dad called him on his birthday 🎂🎉.
Great singer..
Ian has charisma through the roof…

Oooh a interview too! 😀
Back when rock was HARD and talk shows were raw and unpredictable! "Coming up next George Carlin!" Fuk yea \m/

"But I dont want to be a pirate"
Wow, this is heavy...ol man Astbury on the phone
Billy rockin’ that Gretsch!
Stories abound that Rick Rubin told Billy that the Gretsch was banished for a Les Paul on the first day of the Electric sessions.
just when you think Ian Astbury was born from some demon, his pops calls
It is Ian 51st Birthday today he was born May 14 1962
Ian is a god. I am convinced. again.

The original Electric album was similar to Love, then they got Rick Rubin to produce it, and he stripped it down, made Electric raw.
I wonder if Ian Astbury's shirt was the inspiration for the Seinfeld episode titled "puffy shirt"...?
