These ‘swinging latin’ grooves came out of the bebop era, when Cuban percussion rhythms were being introduced to American jazz. They are often used in songs that change between a straight ‘latin’ feel and the triplet-based swing feel (e.g. Green Dolphin Street). They are played straight in the demonstration video, but can also be played with swung eighth-notes when appropriate. Watch this play-along version of Caravan for a practical demonstration:

So many drummers don't put a pdf of their music. I am soo happy you've done it. Thanks!
Really love these lessons, Sacha. Please keep posting, especially the latin, jazz and world music stuff.
Sacha, really solid and straight forward explanations with each example. Thank you for sharing.
Even as a non drummer (electronic producer) I find this very helpful, thank you very much! :)

Very help lesson. Thanks
very good lesson ¡ thanks ¡
i am having smaw trouble accessing the worksheet.. can you upload it again please?
I don’t know if this illegal but I always play the bass drum one beat one as well as the and of 2. I think it adds a lot.
Kyle Ball Just depends on the style but yeah it’s a good variation to practice. Some songs would get too bogged down/heavy with that feel but most could use it in certain sections. Common in Brazilian music too (Baiom feel).
It would be so much better if you could make the examples longer, just play them for a couple more bars otherwise we have to replay them over and over to get a feel for it and it's more disjointed
and if he showed the sheet
this is way above my skill level
you can do it
excelent,thanks !!
7:35 nice groove!
I can finally play night in Tunisia (approximately) properly from learning this. Thanks!
Nirab Sarma I was looking for that too. A swing latin Groove for Night in Tunisia. These grooves are great.
sacha can you explain the difference between mambo and cascara?
What am I missing ? You're not playing 1 -2 on the ride.
OK thanks. The count in is a bit confusing is all
any notes?
Is the bass drum tumbao never played on the 1?
It certainly can be, but I like to get people out of the habit of always playing it on one to start with as it's a more freeing groove I think.
Why are you talking about the bar as if it's in 4 and then counting in as if it's in 2?
It's written in 2 bars of 2/2 (my preference) but there's still 4 quarter notes in each bar that are useful to reference.
Hmm, I never saw that as the mambo bell pattern.
Larry Tate You might be thinking of the Bongo Bell pattern possibly...What Sacha plays is definitely the standard, classic version of the Mambo Bell pattern.
Panton night tower
Can u explain the cymbal pattern??
Velociraptor Jesus69 just look for 'cascara'on the internet lol
WHAT KIND OF SNARE IT THAT BRO?
sweet!
Which drum heads do you use?
straight 16ths do not swing. swing is ALWAYS associated with a triplet shuffle feel.
Sacha - When you say "swinging" am I right in thinking you mean "sounding great" as opposed to the swung 8th note meaning (or 16ths if you're thinking that way)? The 8th notes sound straight to me on this. They could obviously be played swung. Nice variations and great video btw.
Awsome lesson. Love that ride cymbal too. What model is that?
Thank you. 21" Sabian Legacy Ride.
Cool grooves and nice video - thanks. I think the first groove might be the same as the first song on this: th-cam.com/video/YteZQN-nW30/w-d-xo.html Not sure though.
Have you ever heard the term "notation"? I guess your answer is "NO"!

@@SachaKDrums Why should I pay for stuff that's for free all around the web?
Sorry, I'm neither interested in f*cking you, nor am I interested paying for stuff I can get for free!
