It's kind of funny in hindsight, Mr. "Needlemouse". Thing is, it's an overly literal translation of the Japanese word for Hedgehog. It's like taking the German word for bat, fledermaus, and literally translating it into fluttering mouse.
As for the game, I kind of lose interest in the first game after finishing Green Hill. I much prefer the sequels (Sonic 2 was my first Mega Drive Sonic and I think that somewhat spoiled my enjoyment of the original).
If you're looking for other great Sonic the Hedgehog analysis, a good channel is The Geek Critique. It's run by a guy named Josh, and he has been a Sonic veteran all the way back since the Genesis era. He has some of the best video game analysis I have seen and really is able to put context in a lot of moments of Sonic's past.
