I became a RN. First . And later went back to school . Worked with the city police. Csi.. I think some of us are RN first. My g child is RN working with the sheriff dept. God help us all. My late husband was first resp.therapy later worked in the prison system as a doctor . I think going to medical school help us to do research and do the job in the criminal area.
@marycahill546 Amen, my fellow psychiatric in-house R.N. She's in a class all on her own. God really blessed the world when he made Dr. Ann. Thank you for your service Dr. Ann Burgess and to all nurses and nurses aides for putting their blood sweat and tears taking care of those in need! 🫡👍🏼Ladies, and Gents too, thank you for making the world a better and safer place.💯❤️🏥 👉🏼✝️👈🏼
That hovering state is real. I did it once. Almost a hypnotic state. Only once as a kid under a lot of stress. Mom was lecturing me telling lies. I looked down upon us both hearing noise but not clearly words. Scary.
No, there are unfortunately millions of kids who get abused, many in ways quite similar to Kemper, but who do not turn into the strange kind of killer he was. It's a soundbite people seem to like to spread that simply not only is untrue, but far worse - you're piling more $hit onto the kids who got abused growing up than they already had, so you're taking the side of the abuser and saying that there IS something wrong with the kids and that is one step away from saying they deserved it. Use your brain if you have one. I think you mean well but this is the exact opposite.
When analyzing these things, one should consider one’s culture as well. For example, the host mentioned corporal punishment as contributing factor to these violent behaviors, however, there are cultures that had or still has corporal punishment as part of their disciplining children but barely have any serial killers in their society.
Rather than hearing the gory details about how criminals think and what they do, it seems that the basic concepts of profiling would help the average Joe be able to read certain people better. I would like to hear more about how profiling actually works and how it could be practically used in more normal circumstances. Or is that asking you to spill secrets?
Your instincts are sharp. These "profilers" are charlatans. You won't find a single book by any of these guys titled, "Here are nine guys I caught and how I caught them". Dr. Anne Douglas, her great catch? Gotta go back to 1983 to a guy named John Joseph Joubert IV. The claim is that a profile that she and Robert Wressler put together, helped catch him. The connection seems sketchy at best and I could not find the actual profile that they came up with. Keep in mind, I could find the meal that Joubert had before he was executed and what his last words were, but NOT the profile. I'm guessing that the profile was vague, as they most often are. Finding a person who kills strangers and is a loner, is not an easy thing to do. It's like you telling me all about your car and where you parked it and me telling you that I can profile the thief that stole it and help you find them. Serial killers are super rare and it's a big world.
Right and the fact why he loves America and put America first. While they’re at it maybe they could explain why potato Joe hates America and is a professional grifter and has sold out to foreign countries for money.
Don’t forget Biden and his pay to play criminal mentality. Both of your parties have criminals at the top. If you cannot see it there’s no help for you Son.
@49 min I appreciate your work here and all the work of the Mindhunter team and Dr Ann Burgess etc, but This is a misrepresentation of the aim of Buddhism, ' millions of people in trying to pursue this as a spiritual goal to get into a dissociative state 48:39 so that their their universe goes along and they just accept the universe and witness it. 48:45 There's plenty of descriptions, not only in Carlos Castaneda with the drugs, but but in Buddhism and Hinduism 48:51 as the state that you're trying to aim for to prove that you are a spiritual being.' Nirvana is not anything like a drug induced dissociative state. As a monk who meditates for years, I also accidentally had a large dose of cough mixture that has an effect of dissociation, called Robitussin, it has a Narcotic element in. It is nothing like the aim of meditation.
Are you familiar with the work of dr Robert Sapolsky (former lecturer and neuroendocrinology research scientist at Stanford University?) Have there been MRI and fMRI studies done on the criminal brains? These might shed some further light.
Guilty by Reason of Insanity: A Psychiatrist Probes the Minds of Killers by Dorothy Otnow Lewis, published back in 1998 describes the earliest case studies of violent killers on death row in Texas and Florida, I believe. Specific areas of brain damage, as well as other influences are identified. It's a good book. Certainly medical inquiry has continued since then.
I can tell you why there is an increase in crime. Someone who should be in jail has been let go to do whatever he wants and now everyone else thinks they can too.
This lecture is fantastic. What they didn’t touch upon is that head injuries can alter the brain. Also genetics play a huge part, like mental illnesses that runs in families, feeble mindedness in families, the mother consuming alcohol when pregnant greatly affects the developing baby’s brain and mother that take drugs. A child being exposed at a young age by the father who is violent and doing criminal things can have a great effect on a developing brain. Being exposed to pornography at a young age and having sexually promiscuous parents has an impact on a child’s development. And of course sexual abuse on the child and what they are told about sex has a huge impact on how their brains develop. But I think genetics play a huge part. There are a lot of people that shouldn’t be parents, both genetically and mentally. And there are too many feeble minded people in our society giving birth to kids who also carry the gene. They are falling pregnant to anyone they meet. They can’t take care of themselves let alone a baby, and these people are a huge burden on society both socially and economically. And then you have the mentally I’ll who shouldn’t be passing their Schizophrenia or their bipolar disorder onto a their children. Genetics play a huge roll in why society is in the way it is.
What a horrific conclusion! I love Dr. Burgess, however this interviewer was severely lacking throughout and ended in the dark ages. Forcing people to stay married is not a solution to anything and is known to cause families (including children) to endure long term and escalating domestic violence. Women and children take the particular brunt of these problems. In the other hand, did you know that MEN just like WOMEN can continue their involvement in their children’s lives even if their relationship with their children’s mother does not work out? It’s true!! He can do that!!! His relationship with those people is not based around her! As a matter of fact is entitled to court ordered parental time and rights with those people where HE can build a bond and make an impact without a forced marriage. Imagine THAT!!! ETA: the Menedez brothers were tortured by their father.
I believe we should focus prevention on these groups Serial Killers target. They always seems to be those that are either looked down on by society or vulnerable. For instance kids, elderly, Sex Workers, Homosexuals, Homeless & ethnic groups. I also find it fascinating how crime changes over the years. Once upon a time dismemberment and setting bodies on fire was seen as a disturbed mind. However now with the advancement of technology killers do this more for practical forensic purposes.
The question about what Ann Bergess does vs racial profiling is perhaps the dumbest question I've seen on something like this. People are educated and well read. So, tvat felt... uncalled for.
Is it possible that the m#rder rates are going up because all kinds of societal lines have been blurred and people have more and more of 2 dimensional communications, relationships, social lives? Desensitization, becoming more and more selfish and self centered as a whole? Societal and civil lines becoming more and more blurred. As things become more and more instant gratification geared anything goes to get it, doesn't surprise me that rates are going up. Less respect or honor toward others is becoming the norm.
Retired Canadian RN here -- 17 years in psychiatric in-patient work, 7 years in forensic psychiatry. Love the fact that Ann is a nurse!

Awesome interview. She is amazing.
She's honestly inspirational
I’m a Nurse Practitioner and being a profiler is my lifelong goal.
Ed Kemper is what you get when you talk mean to kids. Emasculated and hated, he acted it out. Never hit or demean the personhood of any child.

That might be true, but don't you think that corporal punishment does leave a child with emotional and physical scars.

The book goes into details on how the profiling process works and how it can be more widely applied.

@@gerri477the Clinton’s did far more war and crime. They just have better manners.
Some of the things the interviewer says are concerning, such as, everyone wants to be a serial killer. Wow! Wonder what Dr. Burgess made of that!

Dr. Adrain Raine is the expert.

Attachment parenting is a documented way out of this nightmare. Dr Sears has a great book and presentation. Please check it out.
How cool. I still have my letter from The Common Wealth Club. I was too young when I received it.😊 Dr. Burgess is a National Treasure.
Excellent. Thank you.
I love her!
What is criminal impulse and why do some people have horrible irresistible impulses and others do not?
You should read her book - A killer by design. It makes those questions look basic ngl
Enjoyed the interview with Ann Burgess and her coauthor, but the interviewer said one thing g after another that was ill informed and ridiculous!!

Very interesting talk, but please don't comment on concepts of Buddhism when you don't have a clue.
This commentator does all the talking.
