Takes balls of steel to go after your university’s president let alone as a 1st year student. Impressive guy

Actually, there are plenty of people who want to be journalists. But to actually follow the evidence and report on it honestly is rare. If your life depended on the typical journalist’s or journalism student’s honesty and integrity you should abandon all hope.
Falsified academic /scientific reports happen all the time. Getting caught is rare.
When I was in undergrad, I challenged an article in one of the major US medical journals, as their conclusions were 180 degrees opposite of my understanding of how something worked and seemed counter to many of the sources they cited. I reached out to the principal investigator and asked if he could explain their conclusions to me, as I was "just a dumb undergrad" and wanted to understand what they had found. To his credit, he responded and said he'd get back with me. About a week later, he called me and we talked for well over an hour. My understanding was correct. Their "research" was wrong. Worse, he explained how the system worked and how the grad students working under him actually never read the articles they cited. The journal retracted the article.
The scary part is that this was a medical article, with implications for patient treatment and that this is somewhat frequent. At my own Uni, I overheard two professors in a completely different department talking about an upcoming article and how they could massage their data to show a particular thing which it wasn't currently showing. How many false articles are out there which never get challenged?
That’s why replications are such an integral part of science. Journals, however, are less interested in publishing replications or studies that don’t produce impressive results. There needs to be a change in what research gets published because studies that “fail” are still vital.
@@johnracine4589 I think you should have to sign up with a journal before you do the study. Not a perfect solution, but something in that direction. You publish what you will do, and then later submit the results. If you have announced to many studies and not submitted any results, you get banned until you do. Still would not fix peer review in general.
@grayrabbit2211 - right you are. Most of the commentators to this story didn't get it, you are the first one I saw that did. Typical ignorant Americans. @@BitsyBee Ben Shapiro is funded by Turning Point USA and Young America’s Foundation which are in turn funded by conservative billionaires. We need actual local journalism like this kid is doing (we assume?) for it to matter.
I hope so too, but I have a terrible feeling that this guy will face a retribution by the mob that runs the US university academia.
I say this because what he uncovered occurs in almost every universities to various degrees, and if his investigative journalism leads to greater scrutiny of research practices in other universities, it will certainly uncover a lot of dirt, and that will affect the universities' bottom line.
Recently, the purpose of conducting research has become less about experimenting and testing for new ideas and discoveries, and mostly to generate publicity for attracting grants and donations. When there is an incentive to cheat, humans will eventually find a way to cheat, and almost every university incentivizes research that generate publicity.
Much like creative accounting, there are ways to analyze and interpret the data gathered from research to reflect a particular conclusion you desire, and unless you outright fabricate the data, it is hard to spot manipulative data analysis, especially when working with a large, complex data set.
By the way, this is one of MANY kinds of corrupt practices that universities commonly engage in, and this student journalist may have just kicked a hornet's nest. Universities are billion dollar institutions and they also collude with each other, with political insitutions, as well as with private corporations (including the mainstream media), and if their bottom line is threatened, you bet they will use whatever means and connections at their disposal to neutralize the threat.
This student was able to conduct his kind of investigative journalism as an independent student journalist, but if a journalist in a mainstream media organization were to try to look into the matter, most likely it won't get too far.
I hope this student inspires others to conduct independent investigative journalism, because we need an army of independent actors to fight against a well organized mob of the academia.

This is unfortunately very common in postgraduate and PhD studies: the bullying of students over their hard work and data, only being listed as the 3rd or 4th author when they essentially wrote the entire paper themselves over several years. I’ve heard it’s a very broken system with many students suffering from mental health issues because it’s so blatantly unfair. I hope this changes the research community - no one is above it, not even the president of a major research university. Kudos to that young man, science is all about finding the objective truth. Falsified data goes against every scientist’s credo.
Yes, the university system is still quite feudal, and the way it works under capitalism has made it worse - with relentless competition for funding. So many issues - plagiarism, fraud, bullying - have come to light, in many countries and institutions, while the public is being distracted with stupid culture wars.
Your summary is accurate (coming from someone still in the system). Mental health is an issue for varied reasons, from neither being able to crack academia or industry adequate to experience, to the nature of scientific research being an exercise in staying relevant rather than original. I suspect these pressures led to the former Stanford president crossing the ethical border in a push to get highly cited papers to further his career.

Most articles used qualitative research, rather than quantitative, which leads to more BS. The number of times I had to ask for references was amazing. Thr kids who take the easy way out by copying everything their classmate write is a tell tale sign when it's know they are on a lower reading and writing level! 😂 Another example is when I a colleague of mine asked me to write a response to an email she received. I told her at least 2 ppl on it would know I wrote it because of how concise I write in messy situations. Almost immediately, one of them texted me to ask if I wrote it. Its the authoritarians that manipulate the data, why would they bring attention to their own misconduct?
This young man shows incredible potential. Well spoken, honest, driven. He'd make a fantastic investigative journalist
That's very rare with the "journalists" exist now. They are more reporters. Not real journalist. It's incredibly difficult to find unbiased factual reporting. That is truly sad that no one really wants to hear facts.
No MSM will hire him because they are not interested in journalists. They only want stooges who will regurgitate verbatim what they are told.
Absolutely love how Theo Baker credited his team and often spoke of how 'we did this....' or that 'we were able to...' instead of taking all the credit exclusively. He is articulate, brave, and obviously a relentless truth-seeker. Bravo, young man. There is hope in the future.
Real investigative journalism. I thought it was dead. Bravo Mr. Baker!
*FINALLY!!! Real investigative journalism with solid sources and reporting has been revived. By an 18-year-old!* I truly thought ethical and responsible journalism was dead, but this young man has given me hope. The arrogance of the former President - not even giving this young journalist the time of day - makes it even more gratifying that this same young man's reporting forced his resignation.
see investigation released today exonerates him of research misconduct,
Bro what? ProPublica is standing right there.
Rich narcissists are almost always immune to consequences. It's bloody INCREDIBLE that this kid didn't end up cajoled, trolled, mocked, blocked, stonewalled, and ostracized. Absolutely awesome that he had the resources and connections to expose the proper facts and data points.
@@DuffyGabiit's safe to assume academics in university administration are narcissists, you cant have that job without an over inflated ego
Yeah this does remind me of Stockton Rush a little bit.
@@DuffyGabihe felt entitled to fabricate and lie about research for decades. Only narcissists and sociopaths don’t that.
I wonder what is this young man’s family background and connections. Certainly his family is rich enough to supporting him to Stanford.
I'll bet he was but just was strong enough to endure
Freedom of the press allows the truth to come out.
Yes
There’s hope for the future with young adults like him!!
Brilliant courageous reputable articulate guy. Maybe there is some hope for America's future, if people like this become the nation's leaders.
*Hero. Journalist Theo Baker, that is.*
I'm glad the interviewer asked substantive questions throughout and didn't just focus on the reporter's young age. A serious treatment of a serious topic.
Kudos to Theo for his incisive reporting. Accountability is the name of the game.
Theo Baker has courage and integrity and has a bright future. Congratulations on the Polk Award!
Alternate title: “Reporters shocked that journalism turns out to require more than sitting on Twitter and “reporting” what was “tweeted”. “ Great job Theo! 👍 👏
Thank you for your comment.
In all fairness, a news reporter is just someone who is good at presenting info given on a teleprompter and perhaps facilitating interviews like this. This guy is more of an investigative journalist.
Quit your ignorance. There are different specialties in journalism

Amen!
If the WSJ, NYT, etc. aren't offering this guy a job on the spot, they're making a huge mistake.
Oh they will.

Mr. Baker is pretty much guaranteed to have an illustrious career in journalism going forward. I am glad he began his life's work by exposing Stanford's president to a richly deserved humiliation.
I don’t know , in our current system, doing honest work, and reporting the truth seems to be very rare and almost nonexistent.
"Mr. Baker is pretty much guaranteed to have an illustrious career in (journalism) going forward"
That's what they said about JFK.
People have been threatened, and yes, murdered for less. Its amazing he was able to continue this investigation and still (presumably) attend classes.
News outlets today don’t want his kind. Journalism now must follow a narrative, truth be damned.
@@charlescurran1289 I agree, but our salvation lies in the words "today" and "now". I believe change is coming.
Kudos to Theo! I was shocked at the practices that I witnessed as a research assistant at Stanford many years ago.
Remember, kids:
1.Stay in school
2. Blindly trust the science
3. Never question academic authority
Thank you, young man, for breaking most of these rules!
hahahahahah thanks for telling us what NOT TO DO
Real investigative journalism? How refreshing!
So true these days. This young man is smart enough to know he has NO CAREER in the MSM outlets for telling any truths. They only hire teleprompter spokes vegetables to shape a narrative, he is much too clever for that.
Hopefully, he will soon build up to exposing family members and friends. He has a bright future in the Komsomol.
This young man renewed my faith that our future generation will be outstanding!
And the collage kid who was the main whistle blower in bringing down Thernos and Elizabeth Holmes.
Makes me proud of the young guys.
Investigating Journalists like this young man are so needed.
What an amazing kid! People like you are the future we all look forward to, amidst the horrors of our times & those to come. 👍
Something like this happened in Davenport, Iowa about 30 years ago. New college president was hired, college newspaper was researching her background for their story and the facts didn't line up. The Board asked her to explain, on a Friday.
She said they were at home, she'd bring her documents to a meeting on Monday
She never showed up. Moved. Not even a shadow left.
“The guilty flee where no man pursueth.” Don’t recall who said it, and it’s so apropos for this!
The bible... In proverbs 28:1. Basically the guilty are afraid of being caught or found out
Brought down by an 18 year old... Ouch!
Good example of the pursuit of truth. Easy to fall back and be overwhelmed by society and power. Amazed at this young man's spirit. Real superman! And cheers to Stanford for supporting him. One step forward we go again.
!!
This kid is amazing!! On his way to be a fine young man and an even wiser old gentleman!!
Stunning that someone could be so smart, tenacious, and well-spoken at such a young age!
Excellent questions by the lady reporter. Even better answers by that freshman student. Very impressive!
The “lady reporter” has a name, folks - she’s Kristen Sze (it’s in the link in the byline description).
Even his PR statement reveals his weasely nature, this young reporter and the paper he belongs to deserve all the kudos, good job young man!!
Fantastic journalism! Keep up the great work, we need more investigative journalist like you!
This is the tip of the iceberg. Whenever large amounts of research and grant money are involved integrity takes a back seat.
in education, especially higher education, integrity does not exist
You are correct. Most will never be caught because in order to catch them you need investigates into each renowned scientist's work. IMO, about half of them would be guilty of fake data in their papers.
I hope he stays in the field of science reporting, because there are so few good science reporters and there is a tremendous need for better coverage in that field. This allegation had been going around for awhile and it took a college student to report on his university president in order for the truth to come out. This is the kind of reporting that the board of trustees for the university should have looked into before he was selected, but they did not. My point is, this is a fertile field for a journalist to consider.
Good Job!!’ Keep it -up !! We need people like him, who know how to bring out the bad people , conning, scamming Anybody or Anything!!! We’ll hear more about him & his supporters 💯👍👍🥰
Disgusting behavior on the part of Stanford’s (!!!) president. 🙄😵💫😖

Worth the 12 minutes to watch this report and was surprised that it was from an ABC news station. This piece raised a few questions/comments in my mind:
1. Why was the president of Stanford allowed to remain on the job and be paid for a little more than a month after this revelation? Why did the regents not make it effective immediately? Was he due a bonus before the date of his resignation? Are the regents accepting that someone who has corrupted the educational system continue to be in charge for the remaining time before he bows out on his own terms.
2. Will all work that he has published, been listed as the author/co-author or work that he has reviewed and endorsed in his career now be labeled as suspect or unverified?
3. Will the former PhD candidates under his supervision who were coerced or discredited sue him and the institution he was working for at the time for any extra time it took to earn their PhD, or for lost wages if they were not granted their PhD or for mental duress because of his behavior?
Just a few things that went through my mind as I watched the video.
Naively, I underestimated the importance of journalism in our society until recently. This video really helped that view of my mine to mature into respect.
Impressed to hear an actual investigative Journalist! Brilliant young man with integrity!
You can tell the lady reporter is in Aw of him. We are too!! How refreshing!!! 😊
This man doing society and the world such a huge favor, thank you young man!
This is huge!! Congrats Theo and colleagues!
Good for him. True and honest journalism.
This young man is very impressive! I also want to shout out Kristen Sze for her exceptional interview skills! She asks thoughtful questions and lets her guests answer questions fully. I love your work!
One obvious question that she never asked: What was the thing that got you investigating the possibility of this fraud. What was your first clue? Why did you begin this investigation?
"Something extraordinary happened today..."
A journalist showed integrity.
This shouldn't be extraordinary. It should be a daily occurrence.
They hired one of his business partners to investigate him ? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

This student is brilliant. And the reporter is asking good questions.
About 15 percent of researchers ADMIT to drawing conclusions that favor their sponsors, according to study by National Right to Life 2009.
Oh the irony... you're citing a biased religious organization that is drawing "research" conclusions that favor its funding partners. In reality, commercial industries fund only ~5% of academic scientific research. It is almost all funded by government funds, university funds, and non-profits like the American Cancer Society. Industry-funded studies are required to be clearly labeled and are interpreted accordingly. There are plenty of ethics problems among researchers, but let's evaluate the issue using proper scientific, verifiable sources.
