One of us liked this movie a whole lot more than the other! Based on the French graphic novel series by Alexis "Matz" Nolent and Luc Jacamon. Co-starring Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell and Arliss Howard. Opens Oct. 27 in limited release before streaming on Netflix Nov. 10. Are you looking forward to seeing Fincher's latest film? Christy and Alonso, congratulations on hitting 25K subscribers. I believe you guys deserve 100 times that number of subscribers. Maybe one day you will get there. Its nice to see Michael Fassbender back on screen. It seems like he took a long hiatus from the big screen. I guess when someone stars in that atrocious Assassins Creed film, way back in 2016, then Snowman, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, having such a string of duds could derail anyone's career.
Thank you so much, Drake!! He's really good here.
Congrats guys 🎉
@@BreakfastAllDay you guys are the best, really! My favorite pair of critics since Siskel and Ebert. Great insights, tons of knowledge, and wonderful personalities to watch. Like the poster above said, you deserve so many more subscribers, and you'll get there no doubt. Never stop posting. Cheers from Dubai!
@@blackforest825 So extremely kind of you, thank you! And hello to you in Dubai 👋
I love that so many of these recent fall films are scheduled to debut quickly on streamers like AppleTV and Netflix, instead of VOD rental, it makes it easier to keep up.
It's a lot, even for us, and it's our job!
Fincher brings out the best out of his actors and I feel like this movie is going to bring out the best of Fassbender.
Not a massive fan of his (although I do like his, um, endowment lol), but I can imagine him working quite well in this role.
Christie singing The Smiths has made my day.
so ready for new fincher
Enjoy and report back!
OHHH big CONGRATS on the 24K subscribers!!!! I'm sure the next 25K will be in half the time!!
Thanks Bev!
Definitely looking forward to seeing the movie on Netflix, and huge congratulations on reaching your milestone of 25K subs! Cheers to the next 25K!
Thanks so much for the encouragement, Jane!
So glad to have a new Fincher movie, so glad you brought up Adaptation, a much under appreciated movie! Alonso mentioned a new Harmony Korine movie which is always a much watch. Good stuff!!
Looking forward to seeing this, can't go wrong with Fincher. Glad to hear the original score was fitting too, Trent and Atticus fit like a glove with Fincher. What a year for their score work, the Turtles Movies and this!
That's called range!
It sucked. Boring as he. Ĝeneric.
Christy, i love your take on the film. You really get it. David Fincher is just amazing at his craft.
So, a non-glamorized hitman movie: how does it compare to Barry (other than the series vs movie, that is)? Congrats on 25k!
Congrats on the 25k subs. Really happy for you guys.
Thank you so much! We're glad you're a part of things here.
Congratulations on 25K. Sky's the limit!
So kind, thank you!
Thank you for this review.... Was really interesting listening to you. Yes and congratulations for reaching your subscriber goal.
Thank you so much!
What you think of Fincher's Mindhunter show for Netflix. I was reminded of what I loved about his dramatisation of the Zodiac events. Mostly the down right creepy 70s aesthetic which he's a master at.
Haven't seen it, glad to hear it's good!
That show is tremendous. I was sorry to hear Fincher's recent comments about how it wasn't coming back
I really hope I have a theater near me playing this. The only Fincher 🎥 I’ve seen on the big screen is “Gone Girl”. What all his work have in common? Every frame is art and you can take any still and put it on your wall. Love Fincher & Walker working together again. Walker apparently wrote this after the studio at the time rejected his Friday the 13th pitch
It'll be in theaters for a few weeks, so hopefully you can check it out!
You guys did Death Becomes Her!? Yayyyy!
Yep, on our Patreon! Patreon.com/bfastallday
I was just thinking about Fassbender as Bond. He must be on the short list.
He was my pick for James Bond, 10 years ago. Unfortunately, Fassbender is 46, and usually Bond actors stop playing the role in their early 50s. Bond producers usually want to cast someone in their mid 30s to start the next iteration of Bond or, at the oldest, someone who just turned 40.
@@alphacause they wasted him :( sooo sad. He would be a perfect bond.
@@alphacause He out walk into Barbra Broccoli's office and pull up Tom Cruise's IMDB on his phone. 😂😂😂
@@Flashbagfolly First, Tom Cruise is a freak of nature. Cruise is such an outlier. Using Cruise as an example of an action star who is believable, despite being old, is like pointing to a lottery winner and saying "see...the lottery is a sound investment strategy".
Secondly, Cruise started the Mission Impossible franchise when he was young and his face became synonymous with the franchise.
Finally, Cruise has a star power that Fassbender, despite being a greater actor and having a amazing screen presence, does not have.
@@alphacause I was joking. That's why I put the laughing emojis. There's only 1 Tom Cruise.
They say once you hit 25K, we'll the next stop for your success train on TH-cam is the big 50K. Congratulations, see you at 50 K.
Woo hoo! Thanks so much for the encouragement.
I've finally caught up with this. I was going to mention how I'm not typically fond of narration, but Christy explained why it works here much better than I can haha.
I had a good time, it breezed by IMO, and the Swinton/Fassbender scene was tremendous. He barely says a word, but is acting his ass off, and she of course is killing it. It reminded me of Denzel/the Russian dude in the Equalizer. Super tense, yet somehow calm. Just a true testament to their acting abilities.
Totally dug this one. Don't think it's QUITE top-drawer Fincher.....but may think differently in a few months, because it absolutely riveted throughout, was stuffed with delicious callbacks to other Fincher movies, Mr. Fassbender is utterly remarkable, and any film that can throw Tilda Swinton AND Arliss Howard in the final reels and still keep the protagonist in focus is doing something right. And the Smiths needle drops are inspired. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso.
This movie looks to be channeling a lot of Jean-Pierre Melville so I have been pumped for this for a while
Let us know what you think!
Yup. Specially Le Samouraï for sure.
Fincher never disappoints
Fassbender is also interesting to watch
Nice to see him back on screen here.
Oh yes. It did disappoint. Well, no THAT much, Mank kinda prepared me, but still, I prefer when Fincher makes good movies.
It was trash. Fincher hype
Christy are u and Alonzo going to review "What Happens Later" Meg Ryan's return to big screen?
Congratulations on 25K subscribers!! 🎉🎊🎉
Thank you so much! 🥳
I will go and see Michael Fassbender in ANY movie!!
Another short run before Netflix. Ah so that's why it's only at the Landmark! Oh and the Alamo here as I now check.
I just jumped to the end for your scores. I'll return to watch your full reactions after I see it.
Hi Christy & Alonso. Loved your review as always and having you sing like Morrissey!! We prepped for this by watching the Criterion disc of "Le Samourai". They should have called Fassbinders chanter Jeff at some point! I also really liked this especially the long intro scene in Paris and of course, Tilda Swinton. Ultimately, I liked but did not love this film as its obsession with detail and process never allowed it to develop and go anywhere. Thanks so much. PS - MF is better at yoga than us!
Hi Guys! Awesome review as always! I've also noticed how The Killer sorta breaks conventions of the usual hitman movies: in the sense that Fassbender messes up the job right at the beginning, while deluding himself via monologue that he is clean and perfect. At least this movie doesn't play out like the usual Jason Stratham action movies. @Alonso, @Christy, Anything else that you feel that Fincher adds/breaks/changes the conventions or rules of a typical hitman film?
Huge congrats on your 25K. Been following y'all since "What the Flick"! on to 100,000
Extremely kind of you, thank you for sticking with us!
Love the shoulder moves to the Smiths song... it's also one of their BEST songs
Lots of good choices on the soundtrack here. Check it out!
For the Algorithm. Great job guys!
Very kind, thanks!
If I become a patron, can Alonso use an actual microphone? I'm jk I love you guys and I'm already a patron
I kinda miss when Fincher worked with composers like Howard Shore and Elliot Goldenthal. Trent Reznor AND Smiths songs? Borderline Gen X overkill.
But it sets the mood and matches so well with the cool, mysterious melancholy of his visuals, doesn't it?
I was wondering where the “What the Flick” people went. Subscribed!
We're so happy you found us, thanks!
Congratulations on reaching 25k!
Thank you so much 🥳
Can’t wait to see this. Hopefully checking it out on Friday. Congratulations again on the 25K subscribers!
Thank you, Jason! Let us know what you think.
@@BreakfastAllDay Saw it yesterday and liked but didn’t love it. Very glad I watched it on the big screen. It’s Fincher and therefore very cinematic.
@@jasonraschen1109 Indeed, thanks Jason!
I finally caught up with this one today. Very late, I know. Agree with Christy. I found it very entertaining. Felt like those Saturday nights thrillers I used to watch with my brother when we were kids. Every part has something but I loved Paris a bit more than the rest. The Sam Malone alias made me laugh.
"He's a regular Frankie Munoz" ...lol
This is like his primary job now!
@@BreakfastAllDay lol...
Can’t wait to see it. Not showing near me so I’ll have to settle for Netflix. I love Fincher movies. Not going to let Alonso’s downer review ruin it for me 😅
Hope you enjoy, Katie!
Lol
Love the movie and M. Fassbender. The movie will be on my playlist next to Atomic Blonde, JW, Equalizer and Nobody.
Why do I want all Fincher films to be set during the 1970s?
can’t wait to see Aggro Dr1ft, hearing Alonso doesn’t like it is honestly a plus
didnt realise this was a made for netflixer. Funny how both this and Killers of the flower moon are both streaming first (sorta) and hitting the cinemas now.
Ah, it's the other way around in the U.S.
This film reminded me structurally, compositionally and pacing wise to Melville’s Le Samouraï. Also the stoicism and well, choice of the hat for the lead. Loved the very contradictory cynicism of the narration peppered with humorous aliases taken from American sitcoms for Fassbender’s character. Not a single rent a car caught on he was called Archie Bunker or Sam Malone or Lou Grant or both Odd Couple characters? I also wish more films like this were made these days.
I watched this film the other day in cinema. It's really good..
I'm not sure there are many other directors who are better at directing a thriller than Fincher.. Super duper lean and super duper simple.
Man with hat who thinks in whole sentences, wants to find the man who hired the people who hurt his partner.
Ha, well said! Glad you enjoyed.
Hmmm… another slight disagreement. But when you watch 3 hit an movies around the same period, there is going to be comparisons and preferences. If they are bad, Alonso might do his own hit jobs and knock these movies down. 😂😂😂
I saw it last night on Netflix and I lean more toward Christy's take. I thought the violent, visceral fight scene in the dark house was one of the best ever filmed. What do either of you think of the fight scene and would you rank it one of the best? Obviously lots of fight scenes in movies but the way it was filmed in the dark gave it an added dimension over all the stylized fight scenes out there in my opinion.
Glad you saw it. That fight scene was so intense, especially because everything else he does leading up to it is so meticulously cool and precise.
@@BreakfastAllDay Yes. So meticulous and with his experience it looked like he would have no trouble in the house but when no one was around I began to think someone is going to attack him. The stunt work, lighting and sound design all amped up the scene. Thank you for your review.
That scene was incredible. Fassbender has been part of 2 of the best brutal fight scenes filmed. Between this and his fight in Soderberghs Haywire!
I'll definitely see this is a theater as soon as possible. I assume Netflix is giving this a very perfunctory theatrical release, so I'll be sure not to snooze and lose!
Don't snooze! Enjoy, and let us know what you think.
@@BreakfastAllDay Unfortunately no AMC theaters, so no A-List! Bummer! But, I got a ticket at The Paris Theater, which I haven't been to in decades! It's the beautiful old school single screen theater right next to the Plaza Hotel on 5th Ave. I know that Netflix bought it a couple of years ago, so it makes totally sense that The Killer is playing there. I'm kind of excited to visit that theater again! I remember it being a good room.
I cant wait to see it hopefully it comes to a theater this weekend in Houston tx 🤞🤞🤞 most of theses Netflix big indy films do
Great, let us know if you end up checking it out. Sorry about your Astros!
I just saw the movie I really enjoyed it had his own pacing I love Michael Fassbender acting it very much wants you to follow along it doesn't spell anything out which is great I love how mysterious it was very Max Payne like😊
I hate the type of suspense that is dependent on whether somebody gets shot or not. And this movie is definitely full of that. But even so, I found this movie very entertaining, which surprised me (given the first sentence in my comment). Fincher doesn't disappoint.
I’m more with Alonso on this one. I expected The Killer - if nothing else - to deliver something I haven’t seen before, but this felt too generic and nothing we haven’t seen from other projects like Dexter.
Out of Fincher's dozen or so movies, it sounds closer to a Top 10 than a Top 5 movie in his filmography?
This film feels more like for Steven Soderbergh than Fincher.
I heard Michael Fassbender never blinks. During the entire movie. I gotta watch it again to see it. Anyone else see that?
I've seen enough reviews of this movie that I don't feel the need to see it. I'll rewatch John Woo's THE KILLER.
A 6?! I liked it a lot and it's rated around 7 for me. Liked and subscribed.
We're so happy to have you here, thanks!
Having read the original French/Belgian comic which this movie is based on, I would have to say that the story is too long and complicated to adapt into a single movie. Even the hitman's physical appearance is more ordinary in the comic. Fincher is always good. I am glad he did this story.
You'll have to let us know how the movie compares when you see it!
Ah man, is there only ONE scene with Queen Tilda?
There is, but it's juicy.
Aesthetically pleasing but pointless. With all the supposed "hand holding," it's still confusing. I didn't always know who marks were and why he was killing them.
4/5 for me. Sadly wasn’t playing in a theater near me. I know if I saw on big screen it’d undoubtedly be a 4.5/5 (because while many things people discover at 🏠 whether it’s on 📺 or 📀 or 📼 the theatrical experience just changes EVERYTHING). I thought this was so cool. Tho a couple of his 🎥s run a few minutes shorter than this, this thing just moved so damn fast. It’s almost two hours but felt like 75 minutes
If you’re shooting a thriller, get Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to score it if you can.
Superbly made, but the theme's too dark for me. Cold, ruthless revenge, amoral characters. I need to watch a comedy after this experience.
Tilda Swinton was wonderful, however, and offered a welcome contrast to Fassbender's character's one-note affect.
How Fassbender emerged from that exhausting fight in Florida with just a few scratches really strained credulity. Anyone else would have ended up in hospital . . . or dead.
The aliases he used were funny: Lou Grant, George Jefferson . . . I was waiting for Archie Bunker!
Cant wait for this
There was me and 1 other in the theater on Tuesday. Sad.
And he asked me in the lobby what my thoughts about the ending were. We both had different theories. I could really use a SPOILERS edition from you guys but clearly that won't happen.
Enjoyed it…some great lines ..Hagen Daaz ..Desuke watermelon ..hilarious..
It's a very sharply written film. Glad you enjoyed it too!
I just watched this movie. I'm with Alonso on this. 😅
Visiting LA and just saw this at the Dolby theater I thought it was well acted but empty which is kind of the point but I still felt it needed something. Glad I saw it but more of a Netflix watch.
Oh wow, you saw it at THE Dolby Theatre, where they do the Oscars? That's cool!
Hated it. A movie about a killer that starts with no kills and a boring 20-minute monologue delivered in a robotic monotone, that doesn't hold a candle to American Psycho's monologue? No, thanks. And then he fucks up the first kill sooo clumsily that his entire rethoric falls even flatter. Puh-lease. Terrible script.
I read the graphic novel and this movie, besides the opening scene, kinda, has basically ZERO to do with the comic. I don't even know why they cited the comic as the original source. It's more of an inspiration.
Christy and that "darkly" again...
how about the film leon
Still sounds interesting; alas, it didn't open here this weekend; instead, we got Five Nights at Freddy's which doesn't sound nearly intriguing.....sigh....maybe next week....but thanks as usual!
Did you ever end up checking this one out?
Fassbender is a race car driver? Does he make salad dressing too?
25k by Oct? Playing with house money.
We're very proud and thankful!
It’s simple but I really enjoyed it. Better than Mank
In his defense.. How can you be called Fassbender and not be a Race Car driver?
Movie was Sooooo goood!!!!
Watched it today. Not bad. It’s basically hitman movie but if a great director and writer made it 😅 only issue I had, I’m guessing they could not get real world input on things he did or they did not have time to have 2nd review or reshoots. Because somethings could have been done a lot better overall, been a while I’ve sat through a Movie and not gone to the toilet was interested the whole time 😂
That's what we all had at the very top of our movie must-see list... ANOTHER ASSASSIN MOVIE!! Me and my friends were just talking about how there just isn't enough hitmen in movies these days. Thank you Hollywood for giving us the gift you've given 1,000 times before and continue to refuse making original, visionary films ... we are truly blessed. 😆
I couldnt stand the tilda swinton bear hunter aligory . i winced through it . But other than that , i love the movie .
Oh no, what made you wince?
Davod fincher has only made ONE good movie. His only comedy. Fight Club
Respectfully disagree! What did you think of The Social Network or Gone Girl?
@@BreakfastAllDay social network ends with, "maybe Zuckerberg is not such a bad guy afterall." In Gone Girl i kept blaming her (a supersmart author) for marrying such a lunkhead and then revenging him for being a POS.
Seven is a Masterpiece
Totally disagree. He is a craftsmen. Zodiac, Seven, Gone Girl we’re so well done and great story telling.
Nobody remembers the amazingness that is The Game. I like it more than I like Fight Club.
Canceled Netflix after raising the fee to $23 a month.
Worst Fincher I've seen. No idea what he thought he was going for with this script
It’s good not great. Very slow. Kind of clinical and methodical and the ending is not satisfying. 6.5/10
A flawless execution of a flawed, boring story.
