With the way the weather has been lately that was a cracking afternoons walk in and nice to see the Wild country out again for another airing. Despite the sun it did look cold and to be honest I would prefer a hot drink rather than a cold can. Loved the skies, which looked like they were on fire and the night shots were amazing, worth bring up the big cameras. I need to look at those handwarmers, looked really good and a great morning to walk up too, cold wind apart. Cheers Alan
Glad you enjoyed it Alan, I do like the helm compact 1 . it was great to have some settled weather but that didn’t last long 😂 the calm before the storm as they say !! tfw atb Dave
What I'd give for conditions like those Dave. Every time I get a window the weather has been utter shite. A brilliant night sky too, what a result. Interesting re the cross too. ATB, Chris
Nice one Dave, the drone footage just shows why you love that area. Stunning photos mate, it seems rare to get decent conditions these days ffs. Whisky & chocolate a perfect combo 👍. Cheers & Atb, Dave
Such good fortune to have a starry clear night. Like you I really appreciate the design of the helm 1 compact. Placing the poles down the spine and at right angles at the centre crossing really provides max sapport for a given weight. And the absence of sleeve on the lateral red poles means you can quickly and safely erect the tent in strong wind. I have however found it beneficial to make some additions. The earlier version of the tent especially had a sleeve break down problem where the poles cross at the top so Ive added 2 inches thick gaffa tape around each sleeve at that point. Secondly the use of poles at perfect right angles at the crossing point means they are like two parallel lines that never meet and so the tent is vulnerable to roll distortion from both sides. So I have attached 2 long dyneema 2.5mm cords from the top crossing point to be used as guylines. And I have tied with gaffa tape dyneema cord 2/3rds way up the lateral red poles for use as guylines for the same reason. The floor is so thin I always use a plastic ground sheet. What has been a surprise and dissappoinment is that after only 2 nights the pole bag was starting to show a hole. Now that Ive used it on 6 single night trips, its worse. 70D polyester with 5000mm PU coating has never worn like this for me. Made me think of Hardy Tempests Wild Camp and Walks channel where he was similarly surprised and dissappointed at way a v small hole just kept tearing expanding into inches. This has really made me doubt this fabric and undermined my confidence in a v cleaver and well balanced design. Thx for posting. 😊 JMO.
Thanks never really noticed regarding the ground sheet , but I will be keeping a closer look. I always felt it felt rather robust . maybe because I’m just an occasional user of this tent. I do like its design with the external pole sleeves but I will keep a close look at these from now on. atb Dave
Thats a canny spot there Dave...Ive never managed to get across there on my short fat legs as the heather is too long...😲.havent even been up there this year. I liked it when the cottage was still open so you could stop off for a brew...I'll not comment on those 'Forestry meanies'..🙄😷..that boarded it up🤬.Nice to see you shaking off the dust on that Helm..I added extra guy lines to mine......llama-ladee-anny🤓
Thanks Annie, yeah it’s no fun trying to reach there but worth it for the views tho.The cottage is well and truly locked up these days , like you I always stopped when passing it. It us the season for the Helm 1 again ⛺️😂👍
Hi Dave Nice camp, dry and wind free, nice to have a calm tent camp with no flapping What are you going to do for food after this camp, fresh and cook ? I had planned a wet tarp and bivy Friday but looking at the forecast it’s a bit more than just wet !! So can’t decide, will see how I feel and look on the weather app,
Thanks Adrian , I dropped lucky for a change with the weather. I will probs use the packet pasta meals and add chicken or ham to thicken them up . Cooking fresh food …. Me lol . Hope you manage to get a camp , sometimes I think they overhype these forecasts and half the time it’s ok 🤷♂️ atb Dave
I really enjoyed this one Dave - it had some nice serene vibes going on. A superb spot to have some dinner - and rare weather for you I think. Re-the obelisk they would need a bloody good saw to cut that out - mechanical no less. Mind you they had some secret techniques. Well, awesome stars - I could hear you were chuffed they came out and hey the weather showed. Great stuff. All the best. Mark
Yes it was great to have a cold crisp camp for a change , the mat I’ve had for years is from tread light gear. www.treadlitegear.co.uk/ripstop-aluminium-camping-groundsheet-footprint-for-exped--neoair-88-p.asp
Great video, Dave! Loved the star shots and drone footage. Regarding the whisky I got a cheap titanium hip flask off Ali Express - perfect for lightweight camping
Great camp/pics on this one Dave, just watched this after my night shift..👍🏻 I’m still waiting to do my first frosty camp of the autumn, unfortunately the rain has set in again for the next week or so! 😖 Good to see you back out in the Helm C-1 also, I actually think it’s my favourite of all my shelters, certainly for the colder season camps anyway.
Looks like a great time, enjoy your time.
I did thanks ⛺️👍
Dramatic views across the border landscape. What a spot to camp.
Thanks Richard, hope you are all good mate 👍
@@BorderRambler Alls good just busy hope can get some camping in soon. Ta mate hope your good,
