- Fix Destination Path Too Long Error In Windows 10/8/7.
Users get the “Destination Path Too Long” error while trying to copy, move or remove certain files or folders on Windows operating systems. Most of the time, this error happens because Microsoft has a 256/260 folder and name restriction in place.
Even if the issue is over 20 years old, the bug is still encountered on all the recent Windows versions. Keep in mind that this is not a limitation of NTFS, so changing the format will not remove the issue. The problem is caused by a limitation within the Win32 API library. Most of the standard issued applications (including File Explorer) will malfunction if the character limit is exceeded.
If you’re currently struggling with this issue, we might be of help. Below you have a collection of methods that have enabled users in a similar situation to resolve the issue. Please follow each potential fix in order until you encounter a method that fixes the “Destination Path Too Long” error.
This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung). - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
Despite enabling long paths in the registry I still can't copy deep directories in windows 10. For 2023 that's actually quite an unfortunate limitation of Windows.
I can't find Long Paths Enabled in Windows 7 or 8.
it is already set at 1 for me on my windows 7 and i have the problem, so do i set it to 0?
Thank you so much! I'm not a very techy person and your tutorial was super easy to follow. I'm very grateful thanks a lot! 😀
Glad I could help
Is this working for windows 64 bit as well or only 32 bit?
Hi MDTech , I tried this same technique you showed in your video years ago based on an article I read somewhere , and now your video says the same but it didn't work for me ( I'm using Win 7 ultimate ) , I also tried ( in addition to 0 & 1 ) all the digits up to 11 ( one after the other ).
Any ideas plz ?
thanks :)
Had the same problem in the past, failed to resolve. The Microsoft official site gives two ways, one by registry and one by admin tools to lift this limit. Both failed for me back then, and they failed again today as i was stumbling once again into the ancient of 256 characters limit, built by MAX_PATH and some nasty mofo decades ago.
There is only one answer to this.....LINUX.
Or anything else that is not windows.
@@egooidios5061 I solved my problem using Linux.
@@joaquimaugusto8074 how ?
@@egooidios5061 how ?
@@JG-nh2mr They meant they solved their problem stopping using Windows and using Linux instead as operating system. I am dealing with the same problem and I think it can't be fixed. Shame on Microsoft.
Followed instructions but I'm still having the same issue. Would the straps be different when trying to copy from windows 10 to a USB?
SD cards allow you to do long paths
It says to me when I put 1 on it “cannot edit “Long Path Enabled: error writing the value’s new contests “ sad😿
My windows 7 pro does not have longpathenabled in the FileSystem in regedit.
@MDTechVideos Do you have to restart the computer after you make those changes or does the change comes into effect immediately as soon as you change the value from 0 to 1?

You can use the long path tool for this issue.
In using the long path tool you just have to click on the long path tool application icon and the tool will provide you a window that contains all your files. You have now the capability to move, delete rename and modify your files without getting error messages. It is a user friendly tool and it is a quick fix for this issue.
