putting it as simply as I can, I'd say that Systema is the martial art of teaching what masters of other arts come to learn intuitively (over a longer time)
systema is not a really a martial art it is a system... like he said in this video which was a perfect description of what systema is, it is simply just breathing, relaxation and movement and they all form structure and they all work together to help all of them... proper breathing will keep your body relaxed and keep it free of tension which will help you manage fear and also help you move better where your structure stays balanced... it is a system, that can be applied to any martial art you already know. this will not tell you what stance to take because there are no stances it is instinct and that instinct will further your understanding of what you already do.
yo Martin I really miss having you guys around, I heard you met up with my brother richard: its pete by the way your old student. I hope I get to see you again and train with you guys. Say hello to Joe and your japanese friend. Be well Sifu
Interesting, I wish that was longer. Relaxation is such an intergral part of an elevated movement dynamic. It lets you last longer, not challenging your anaerobic threshold. Also very beneficial in exercise. The one thing I don't understand about Systema is how spontaneity is developed. Usually, you have to learn structure to transcend it. Like jazz piano. I have to learn the notes before I can move between them. So, is there a fundamental structure taught in Systema for beginners? Maybe not forms, but basic movement drills? I'm sure prior experience in Martial arts would be very beneficial for moving past this initial barrier, but are there beginner drills?
Prana Khan yes you do movement drills... you will do a lot of training just rolling around and stretching to familiarize yourself with how your body can move naturally and then you start to build those natural movements to be stronger, strengthening every part of your body and then you gain some confidence. spontaneity I think is just like being instinctive, after you are comfortable with your movement it should be natural and you should be able to move without thinking.. when an attack is coming don't hesitate, don't think, just do, trust your instincts.
A lot of times, learning other kinds of martial arts can have a negative effect in Systema...simply because you're so used to standing a certain way. Systema sort of tries to bring you back to being yourself in fighting. Rather than learning new stances and forms, you need to sort of unlearn them to bring you back to your natural stance.
In my experience it took (takes) me quite some time to see and feel my limitations (movement and psychological) and work around them before they eventually resolved themselves. At some point I started to really see what people do (trainers, other martial artists etc.) and derive ideas for biomechnaic possibilities for the training with partners. We differentiated these possibilities and "invented" new variations during the trainings sessions, you could call these elements or movement patterns. Next step felt like a jump into the unknown for me: First feeling my own movement (even standing "still" does mean movementto me now) and then allowing the movement of my trainingspartner to induce ((for-)see, feel, ...) my movement out of me moving continously: A spontaneous (re-) action(s) / movementpattern. Before, most of what I did was an imitation of what I saw previously but eventually my movements became my own "inventions". I wish you good fortune on your way. Henry
WildWhiteDignity Because every action has an equal an opposite reaction. If you are directly behind the punch ypu are throwing, you are also subject to the force you are exerting. Systema minimizes this damage that accumulates in your joints, tendons, connective tissue and body and lets it exit out the elbow instead of through you. Also, this impact produces tension in your body, which is the antithesis of what Systema teaches, staying relaxed.
The punching in systema comes from the traditional Russian folk method called Slaviano Goritskaya Borba, or Gorits/Gorets Wrestling. It emphasizes that loopy style to maximize relaxed whip, and to hit from unusual angles.
INDEED IT IS. A IMPACT CAN MAKE A MAN FORGET ABOUT RELAXATION AND BRACE HIS ASS FOR THE UNPREDICTABLE ART OF FIGHTING. ESPECIALLY THE IMPACT AND LOSING BALANCE FROM THE IMPACT WELL BRACE A MAN INTO A STANCE.
The only thing on your channel is a quote describing your own comment. I haven't practised Systema, but if you read the recommendations from famous full-contact martial artist about Martin Wheeler, you could be wrong. I practised Aikido, and that is total horseshit in terms of self-defense. Problem is that systema looks like it, and so people dismiss it like rubbish. I hope a Systema school will be opened in my city one day.

IamHueGraves Exactly
What? lol
Martin and Kevin Secours are my favourites martial arts instructors. So much depth to their knowledge and both can walk the walk.
SirToyou check out Emmanuel Manolakakis, the guy is great, simple movements yet devastating and he explains very very well.
Thanks of the suggestion, I will check him out.
I was just saying the same...those are some humble yet deadly men
SirToyou Sonny Puzikas is really, really good as well. He's also good friends with Wheeler.
Tyler Austin true, that guy is a total badass
Uno de los mejores instructores de Systema a mi criterio, sus vídeos son excelentes.
The Tao centres systema is done there nursery road every Sunday, I used to train there.
Excellent!
oh mr.ando!

Prana Khan Using complex words without utilizing basic grammar...signs of a pretentious joke.

That sound how did he bare it
Why do i never see a straight punch in systema? It's always that weird off to the side loopy hook.

@Allan Henriques thank you!

Jeltsin style combat 😉😂

is Martin's academy in Los Angeles?
Beverly Hills, which is right next to L.A.
Probably no single russian spy ever used Systema in a real fight.

That is ridiculous nonsense.
