More than thankful to have found this. This is my father, I was 7 when he had passed. There are so many things I wish I could have asked him as I grew up. Seeing old videos of him when he was younger is a blessing from god. I wasn't given the chance to get to know him and all I have are the DVDs he had made and rare gems like these. Wish I could have just one hour to talk with him.
@Acta-nonVerba My father was a Vietnam Vet. While in Vietnam he was exposed to the chemical “agent orange” which ultimately caused health complications as he got into his late 40s and later passing from a heart attack while sleeping in 2011 at age 67. (My father was 26 years older than my mother) thus why I was conceived late in his life.
I do stuff like this, but I don’t catch my food, i gather my own water from springs and know some wild medicine, i actually build a nice shelter on new year’s if you’re interested
I remember seeing this in the early 80's and have been looking for it since, then not only to find it but find out it was the inimitable Ron Hood! A reminder of the man, and how beautiful the Sierra Nevads are; need to get back there! R.I.P. Mr. Hood, and thanks.
We did this in Boy Scouts. It was called "Wilderness Survival." You got a tarp, a `10 foot piece of twine, 3 matches, a pocketknife, a canteen, and that was it. We did during the winter. In order of importance: Shelter, water, fire, food, physical health, mental health.
@@randmcnally6442 In the early 70's, we got to use knives and make campfires and shoot guns at summer camp. I enjoyed the real scouts back then. A true shame that the younger people didn't get to have the same experiences
Nice. Reminds me of me, though I never learned bow drill fire making The vintage aspect was a very poignant connection to that lost time of youthful innocence. The memories it brings to me in such a down to Earthy sort of way, because it is all about getting back in touch with our Earth Mother! Really beautiful. Thank you for sharing! Gotta love it...
I feel compelled to share something I saw recently. It’s called ‘ Willard- the hermit of Gully lake’. Self explanatory really but seeing how a man survived 40 years in -30 was really interesting. I enjoy the ‘Frontier movies/series on Netflix, the determination needed to make those journeys in that era are riveting to me. These old reels are great. Thank you
I lived near the San Joaquin Rv near Kerchoff Lake 2001-2018. Always said I'm gunna walk over the mtns.... Paiutes do it every year near North Fork, over to Nevada... and into Utah for some. Now I'm near Sutter Creek, 125 air miles north. And it's getting late in the day.... I was going to do it alone but now I'm with sweetie and she would not like that..... So now I need to convince my son to do it. If you want to just walk over, it takes 2-4 days. 20 miles a day. So at 75 I'm going to have find a friend to go over the Sierra. JC Fremont and friends crossed via American River. In Late January with snow. And a canon. Took about a month.
Me again...this was, as another commenter said, a film for a Masters completion. Actual time to complete this fim was 5 mo. Dont think it was meant to suggest he was REALLY alone. Google the title, you'll find it. I think those Donner people could offer some advice...like "Dont take no short cuts."
Soooo... cameraman...what's with that? Also, think, more than one guy in crew. How else could he do it? But, to be fair,..all programs back then. Kudos to him for making this film.
This guy would be in jail by the first night today. Catching fish like that, making a bed out of branches,Starting a fire! Between all the dogooder hikers and the forest service. His next video would've been about prison life.
Probably take at least an ounce or two...gotta be supplied. Must have been annoying to have that banjo player banging away whilst he was trying to fish.
It is extremely dangerous to be out there alone. Sasquatch will rip your flesh and pick your bones with his teeth, or is it, pick his teeth with your bones?Anyway, Then you'll wake up grave yard dead, and you'll ask yourself, "Self? Was it worth it?" All the while, Sasquatch continues laughing.
2:29 - “…and I wanted to do it alone.” Just me. By myself. Absolutely, positively no one else. Solo. Only me… …and a camera crew. And the sound guy. Oh, and the grip. Can’t forget the grip. Or the director. But I still did it alone with no technology. Just me and seven other guys. And their A/V hardware. And radios. But that’s all.
Does anyone know what song this is in the beginning, Shazam keeps thinking it’s some real cr@ppy music that isn’t even close to sounding similar…. Literally club techno mix it showed me

This is better than 90 percent of Bushcraft videos out there...
I do stuff like this, but I don’t catch my food, i gather my own water from springs and know some wild medicine, i actually build a nice shelter on new year’s if you’re interested
Because it was filmed before the last shift Of reality.

@@user-ch6um1vn8xwatch again, it shows him making the rope.
Not only cameraman, but that annoying banjo hillbilly band following him around the whole time, too just strumming away just out of camera shot.
I love these old films. Thanks for sharing.
This guy is dropping life lesson one liners all day long!

What a great Film, can feel the Peace and quietness.. love these old films without any drama etc.
That same music plays when I’m in the wilderness
Lamo 😂
LOL😅
I keep hearing banjos playing in the darkness.

Ron Hood the OG of wilderness survival!
Cabin River Outdoors brought me here ... love to see the 'vintage' gear / leather boots and memories of '70s hiking JMT.
Wonderful, thank you! ✌️
The most beautiful film.
Alone in the wilderness by Dick Proenneke is another great one to watch

@@jamessones4044 Thanks!
Reminds me of a australian bushman, an ex army officer traveling and showing how to survive in the outback.
Wild that he hiked from the southern sierras to mammoth in 2 weeks w/ just bushcraft skills.
Awesome video!!!!
He's not alone, there's a film crew with him
If the trip is real then he would've done it and filmed it afterwards. Calm down
looks like someone forgot to scroll down
He started off with a knife and dime and somehow a few days in has rope, an overcoat, bags, etc. This story is BS.
It's the precursor to Survivor.
@user-ch6um1vn8x this man caught a trout bare handed, unless I'm not seeing the fish correctly. That doesn't happen.
it is like the happy version of the movie "Into the wild" I am fulfilled
Awesome video, exactly what I’ve always wanted to do, but never had the time/money.
I didn't see him spend anything, but I get what you mean
@ That camera crew wasn’t cheap I bet. 🤣
Great video
Did the snowshoes work? Looked like he was making some pretty deep tracks. Tough hike.
Cool video, I dream but lack your confidence. Good job
That was incredible the way he caught that fish
It's easy but illegal, tickling the trout they are resting under the stones
"the mountains were ignoring me. maybe that's why i felt so alone"

So ..if he is solo hiking, who is filming? All that movement, zooming in and out, etc.
Is that a young Ron Hood?

Who is filming?
The credit indicate as such yes!
Yep!
Soooo... cameraman...what's with that? Also, think, more than one guy in crew. How else could he do it? But, to be fair,..all programs back then. Kudos to him for making this film.

Survivorman before Survivorman 🙂

Nice little film though thank you.
Yes, it is a bit of a trick on us, but as you say, a nice little film anyway - peaceful💚
It's funny how it took me a while to notice that! Too funny.
Check out Dick Proenneke's film footage for someone truly doing it alone.

The crew is named in the credits at the end.
Bycocket, he did it his way.
2:28 "... and I wanted to do it... alone", as the cameraman pans past him over the mountain range. This was where the BSing for views must have began.

Pretty good
Badass
I hate to be a pessimist but I assume there was a camera man?
That’s one times is more simpler and a lot safer😎
So how is he “by himself?” There’s obviously someone with him filming this and that person has to eat, and sleep, etc. also.
Is he alone if he’s being filmed?
Wonder if he got a permit
credits said he was in sequoia national forest so probably not.
Interesting film, but just making that amount of rope and snowshoes, would of taken quite a chunk of time.

Says he's all alone but fails to mention the camera guy/ possible crew
I bet the cameraman had food and matches
I had to do it alone with a camera guy filming me zooming in and out and panning around lol I mean it’s cool but like he wasn’t by himself
Literally me
Ahhhh yes. Looks like every Washington state hipster. Video was alright. Proenneke was the real deal.
What's he talking about silence and solitude, he's obviously not doing the filming himself.
