I first watched this performance when I was 20. Now I’m about to turn 30 and I have a little suitcase of tragedies & heartbreaks. I always come here for some healing and a little reminder that I don’t need saving; I can save myself. Thank you, Buddy.

This poem helped me during a very difficult time in life. Love this so much and sometimes I still listen to remind myself how far I've come. 'You don't need to save me! I already did that myself!'

@abiolmstead This is a play off of Crowbirds/Mockingbars. Notice the beginning in which he claims to the lightbulb, "I can't possibly do the same one we've been doing, tonight." Absolutely priceless! Don't miss it!

I actually just got out of a relationship. We dated for a year and a half, and the first four or so minute of this video really spoke to me. Buddy, thank you. Thank you for helping me feel a little less empty inside. Your poem really spoke to me, and even though I don't know you, I love you for what you do.
It is a tricky bitch, learning how to live for a living.

I have a degree in English and I consider myself to be a man of good taste. The one thing that I have pride in is that I demand beauty from literature. And I demand beauty from poems.
I was quite literally dying on the south side of Youngstown. I had no idea what the hell I was doing. But there was a cute girl at the Walgreens near me.
And I thought she was just a cute girl. And that would be that. Maybe nice to look at, but I'd be gone to leave for the next thing to be awful to.
She gave me Junkyard Ghost Revival.
I was already not drinking by force, but now there's a reason to.
So, thank you for giving me the words to what was felt.

That was crazy...I thought the first four minutes WERE the poem, not him just talking. I guess you can't turn off being an artist.

Judging by his touring schedule via his website, he is taking something of a hiatus after years of working it very hard on the road. Check his website and you will see what I mean.

Anyone know where i could find versions of his poems without the instrumental?

  • @Jasmineneosh

@abiolmstead It's a similar structure because it's a performance poem with a lot of intensity behind it and a couple of the same themes. The general metaphor of the poem is definitely more self-contained and there's a story to it and a voice from a character that may be Buddy but that has a literary presence to it beyond "life sucks sometimes, here's how I got through it." Also, both are amazing poems, which may be where the similarity you're seeing comes from.

@abiolmstead don't simplify it like that, it's much more than just a few swapped out metaphors...

  • @abiolmstead
    @abiolmstead 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I found the first four minutes to be quite enjoyable, it's amazing how he can just talk and it comes out like a written poem. However, this poem is almost exactly the same one as in Hurling Crowbirds at Mockingbars. The structure is almost the same with the same metaphors just switched a bit. I think Buddy Wakefield is fucking amazing but I'd like to see new material!

Abigail it pains me to write this but it has to be stated. Your not the average idiot. As I can understand seeing as how your talking about something so deep as Buddy's poetry. Therefore, I would ask you not to listen as the world's typical idiots might listen. Apples aren't bananas. Similarities may be present (like seeds and such) however their material makeup are extremely different.
