These are my favorite types of videos. I really love how informative they are about behind the scenes and the politics and I feel like John can't be a show. Should really focus more on this type of stuff
we're not talking about a lot of filmmakers though not having the money to market their movie. Disney has the money to market ,Paramount has the money to market their movie, WB has the money to market their movie. They all have the ability to have the expertise and understand how to get their movies in front of theaters and distribute their own movie to people.
Terrence LaMont Bellows How many movies do you think Disney releases a year? Or Paramount and Warner Brothers. It’s not nearly as much as you think compared to the hundreds of movies that are released JUST in the US alone.
As far as marketing, the major studios arrange financing for marketing. They don't cover it themselves, since tent-pole movies can have up to a $200 million marketing budget. Even with the majors, the financing and distribution are not entirely in house. Disney handles international distribution for many Paramount movies, because Paramount's reach is limited. Universal handles a very small area of South American distribution for Disney. Terminator Dark Fate is a Paramount movie, but it's co-financed by Paramount, 20th Century Fox, and Skydance. Paramount is distributing domestically & Fox is distributing internationally. Skydance owns the Terminator rights so that's why they're involved. Skydance has a distribution deal with Paramount, so that's why they're involved. James Cameron is attached as executive producer, and he has a deal with Fox, so that's why they're involved. Each of the 3 likely used multiple financiers to cover their portion.
I'm a bit in the dark and wondered if you could provide some clarity. Joker grossed $1.074 billion at the box office. As I understand it, the movie theaters get half of this and the distributor gets half of this. But where does this leave the people who invested money in the production of the film to begin with? If the movie theaters get half a billion and the distributor gets half a billion, aren't the investors going to be pissed off that all they get is their cut of whatever the distributor bought the movie for?
Yes!! I was hoping Rob would go more into his "Studios don't just sit on big piles of money" sentence he spoke months ago in another video! One question, though: 8:21 what does he mean when he says "You'll never see it [that money]"? Is it a non-cash deal? Are those people scummy and they don't hold up their end of the bargain? Or what? 😂 Is it what you talk about at the end of the video?
Of course independent film makers don’t have money to distribute. However, you’re saying big studios don’t have the money to distribute? Or can’t finance it themselves ?
Looks like marketing and distributing is what makes film making hard as fuck let alone good films to sell well especially when your trying to make alot of money back. Unless you have great connection. Thats hard to find. Luckly the online platform community can help you with that. Assuming you can get the right people to see it too. The internet is still as crowded as marketing it out in the real world too. Lol.
Now wait, i would get if there were only small studios out there but for example Disney has just bought Fox for over 70 BILION dollars and you try to tell me that they cant spend cash on 4-5 200 milion dollars movies? I just cant believie it... especially when they IP is recognizable all around the World.
I'm Kyle - total gross still has to pay what’s left to actors (say back end), productions costs, theaters, marketing, etc. think if you’re building something and then you sell it. You have to recoup what you sent. what’s left is the profit.
Thanks for picking my topic! :)
Grace Randolph explained it too

John, the audio on this video is a couple of frames out-of sync.

Me before video: movie buisness is complicated.
Me after video: it's still complicated.
Excellent video guys. Well explained.
this was highly informative :)
Thanks for keeping it all the way real!
Could you guys do an Open Mic discussion about this topic?
Thanks

net points in the movie. Net points are worthless
Rob: (billion dollars)No one has that kind of money lying around
George Lucas: -3-
Rob is great!

Disney paid Fox investor with stocks.
Zachary Micheal yeah thats a good point. But still, I cant imagine Disney borrowing money from the bank for every movie they make.
But where does the total gross of the money go after the movie makes a ton of it? Or lose. I.E. Avengers - Endgame.

@@Whizkidd2025 But that's 2B. Does that mean they don't get to keep what's left of that amount?
I'm Kyle • I mean, whatever profit is left, the studio gets to keep. Half of the box office is usually the absolute most a studio may get.
@@Whizkidd2025 Does that mean they don't really reel in 2.7B after all the theatrical run they made for months?

Disney have all the money in the world lol.
Shorty Mtz not yet but not far off.
@@cementbox4430 I meant to say money. Idk why I said movie
