God, this man is a delight. I love his precision and honesty and how careful he is to lay everything out. I'm not even that interested in distribution and he makes it sound fascinating. Hopefully you interview him again in the future. Would love to hear him talk on other aspects of his creative process.

the major 'memo's on every distrobution contract per Deverett:
    1. the period / term
    2. the royalty levels they'll give you (or what fees they will take)
    3. their costs are gonna be / "are they capped?".
    4. are there performance thresholds
    5. what the territories are gonna be / where they're selling it for
    6. what the rights are (all rights or just broadcasting ,streaming, etc...)
    7. is it exclusive or non-exclusive.
    8. what the language is gonna be (what language rights you're giving them & figure it all out in costs ie who's gonna incur those costs )
thx for reading this far. I am a record producer/artist by the name Perkaderk and would love if you would like to use my music for your film. I own 'party' music under the artist name Suburban House Party and my own Pop/R&B music under the name 'Perkaderk' . I own all rights and produce my own music which is completely free of any claim. Good luck with your film endeavors and if you're reading this I wish you all the success you can handle! thanks, Glen Perkins

I was in film school before the Covid event and this was something that would have been covered which I'm missing.
A further detailed explanation would even be better.

Thanks AJ. Learning more about distribution means you will be putting movies into the marketplace so that is a good thing! Here's a playlist with over 100 videos on distribution - bit.ly/3hI8A3W Maybe some of these will inform or inspire.

It’s very important as the interviewer to be really interested in the topic to discuss about and all your interviews are so well done because you dig into what they say, I can tell you are passionate about filmmaking and I thank you so much for what you are doing!!!

There is a balance between distribution and potential clients. Not only do you have to have the knowledge when you meet them but you need to know what you want from them and how it can work out between them.
They are in it to make money and the makers are in it to be known and that can work. But there is a line were distributions tend to cross and that is something that needs to be fixed and addressed like Jeff has done in the past. He understands the business side of things. But he also is a crusader on getting filmmakers the right type of protection against those who will screw then over with no repercussions. Yes there are people like that out there and that is scary to those who do not see it or refuse to see it.

The only conclusion to this interview is that an Indie film maker should walk away from distributors and Netflix altogether. Should choose instead amazon Prime and other self distributed VOD options.

    • @GeekFighterAlphaZero
      @GeekFighterAlphaZero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Amazon Prime changed their Prime Video service several months ago, Low budget, and low production value indie films are on their way out the door. With the new terms of service all videos will be subject to performance evaluations and if it doesn't meet certain viewing numbers it will be removed.

He literally said Netflix gives very fair and reasonable deals, as if they actually care about filmmakers.
