      Videos w/ face feel more personal.
      Videos w/o face (drawing) feel more like an educational style.
      While I totally prefer seeing the face of the content creator (meaning YOUR lovely face!) in their vids, some topics when you're trying to give a lot of information in a shorter time are better formatted without. Just my spin on it.

    I'd like to add that the "Crazy" outlandish designs on the runways are ultimately concepts (like the futuristic concept cars you see in car shows). A client whose ordering a couture dress has 100% authority to customize the shape, sizes, look, and feel of the model's fashions. (i.e., sizes of bows, skirt length, color chades, etc.) The couture client receives a dress ultimately cut to her shape and her style.
    The movie Phantom Thread also shows a great deal how a couture house works (though, it is in England in the mid century and not in France)

    Thank you for this - more please. The art of taking care and time to sew beautifully needs to be preserved. I’ve always been interested in, why is the art of cutting fabric been handed down from generation to generation in couture. After 40+ years of sewing I still consider myself an intermediate. So glad that TH-cam is helping to preserve these arts.

      @zoehongteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're welcome! That's really the crux of how I feel about couture. Should a dress cost $100K? But couture is the only industry that still employs these skilled workers and we need to get people to stay interested in these arts.

    Thank you so much for this video! I didn't know that couture was regulated on a business level. I thought it had to be the most OUT-THERE designs that would make the dress / clothing ensamble unwearable in a day-to-day basis. Maybe an event like the MET Gala or just the runway, because the article of clothing moved past being functional and into being wearable art.

      " I thought it had to be the most OUT-THERE designs that would make the dress / clothing ensamble unwearable in a day-to-day basis."
      Most think this the case, that's why so many dumb clueless people on instagram bash Maria Grazia's Dior haute couture for looking simple and wearable compared to the crazy and costume-like designs galliano did.

    • @gurlbye9942
      @gurlbye9942 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ineverswag The truth about fashion is the most important thing is that the clothes has to sell, otherwise the designer's work is invalid no matter how authentic or pure the aesthetic is. Maria's work is selling and that's what keeps Dior to stay afloat and what LVMH only cares about.
      Galliano was the least to keep monsieur dior's legacy. he made theatrical costumes for haute couture that even the very wealthy did not dare to wear. His ready-to-wear was just "john galliano" with a dior label. If anything Raf Simons took more design cues from christian more than john. If you really look at the key pieces in maria's collections, you'd see that she does take critical elements of monsieur dior and interpret it in a way she envisions a modern feminist woman would wear. so yes, maria's dior is keeping to christian dior's Dior, not john's.

    I love couture details I grew up on Vogue and I use to watch a show Style with Elsie Clinch I,m an Up and coming Designer and I call my business Couture I may not be some big Fashion House but I put a lot of work by hand in my creations Couture is what you want it to be to anyone its an ART weather High or Low France wanted it to be exclusive back in the days to keep some people out because they wanted it to be something for only the Rich but how I feel everyone put blood sweat and tears in their creation Draping , Sewing Hemming , Ironing , Beading blah, blah blah I really loved how Mass production came in and took over Thanks for sharing your knowledge about Couture.

    • @ladyjunon6305
      @ladyjunon6305 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be more honest and better if you use the term "Demi Couture" since it implies high craftsmanship without the strict regulations. Just because you put blood, sweat and tears into a dress doesn't make it Couture. Couture has regulations to protect the status of the brands, the ateliers and the clients who buy these garments. Calling your brand Couture when it's not is false advertising.

    In my experience in fashion, you have to love Haute Couture- High Fashion. Fashion designer it’s an expensive career and it’s not an easy career: You have to learn artistic and technical skills. You have to understand the body: inner and outer.
    When you finish your career you have to make a runway: the runway is going to help you in your career.
    You can start your career as a fashion designer in a private segment and personal designs. You can also can start with friends: it creates a chain effect.
    Your heart and love for fashion is going to guide you.

    Hello Zoe. I'm so glad I found you. You're a very knowledgeable, confident and professional designer and your delivery is faultless. I am learning so much from you (and taking notes). I am almost 62 (old, I know) but have been sewing since I was 9. I have now created my own embellishments using a combination of hand embroidery, trapunto, beading and applique - all hand worked in exquisite detail. Please would you consider creating a video that is specifically targeted to one-off, bespoke designs (either pre-made or made to order)? I am particularly interested in pitfalls and issues that may arise in the marketing process and when pitching to high-end clients. My materials incorporate pure silks, very fine linen and quality organic cotton fabrics. I use silk and linen sewing threads. I hand-dye some of the silks using various natural plant materials (and incorporate a natural mordant/fixative for colour-fastness). This entire process has involved trial and error over a number of years. Sustainability and ethical manufacture will be key and it is my intention to donate a substantial portion of profits to various charities and feature these in my website blogs (i.e. "pay it forward"). I absolutely LOVE creating these embellishments and would really appreciate any pearls of wisdom you could share for those of us who produce one-off, labour intensive garments for the luxury market. Thank you for reading this. Kind regards. Marianne (from New Zealand)

      I'm afraid I can't do a video like this because I have never worked in this field. The only custom work I've done were random, special occasions. I would make sure I have the client's permission to post work in progress shots of their commission beforehand. Good luck!

    'Syndicale' is the adjective relating to 'syndicat' - the French word for 'union'. Important to note it was created by Paul Poiret and others in the early 20th century to combat American department store copies - thus the union rules. It stipulated the use of 'plumasserie' (featherwork), 'broderie' (embroidery) of several types, 'tailleur' (suiting), 'flou' - French for 'vague' - (draping) and several other techniques. No labels were to be seen except the name of the client, and no actual construction should be seen - meaning all stitches should be invisible.

    At 12:30, in addition to the points that Zoe Hong already made about this garment, look at how the pattern matches so precisely between the collar and bodice! There's a reason why I only sew my humble bumpkin garments in solid colors....

    Nice video, Zoe. I thought I knew enough about couture before watching it. I'd love to hear you talk about deconstructive fashion someday, I'm really interested in this topic.

    I don't have a particular interest in fashion, but to hear someone speak about art like this, with equal authority & passion..wow! Very informative. I will look at fashion differently now, and will not think of haute couture as frilly, silly, overly expensive nonsense anymore. (Just overly expensive haha)

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely expensive but maybe not always overly? How much should a dress that took 400 hours cost? But then again, there is definitely brand name recognition mark up involved. Oh, fashion, you are beautiful and infuriating.

    Thank you! I am watching your video before I sign up for a webinar on corsetry on Zoom which closes at 4pm today (I am in the Caribbean, it's 10:15am). I am interested in learning corsetry as the base for bridal gowns, ball gowns and evening wear. I am taking it in Spanish, which they call Alta Costura (high-level sewing). I don't think I'd want to call myself a haute couture person. I am a fashion and design and tailoring student. And of course, wanting to add an extra layer to my dressmaking by learning elaborate dress styles.

    Thanks for this great video... What you describe is exactly how I sew the authentic Reproduction clothing I make only using the finest silks, cottons, wool, & rayon... only natural fibre fabrics... Hand beading... Hand made authentic Antique laces over 100 years old hand made laces... hand embroidery... I love it even if it takes weeks to make one garment.. My favourite designer is Guo Pei

    My Aunts were excellent at the craft. Drapes, sofas, so on.. I adore. Fashion, I create my own looks, but simple. My idea of hand made is scissors, E-600, glue, hand stretched, crudely. I am all about materials. I'm am blown away with the men n women who produce such gorgeous pieces. I'll stick to my knock offs....

    Thanks for the infos and it's great that you put interestings images of each designs on clothing. But, since I am new about this called Haute Cauture, can I ask further where usually the clothes on runaway will be? I had tried to observe like Dior has display them on their galary/ kind of museum. Or there's like Rihanna wore one dress from Guo Pei's (which had become internet sensation though the designer simply laughed to the meme). But, are those like other things for the dresses?
