    Hauling wheat to the elevator in below zero weather was always an adventure of stiff belts, frozen-solid hydraulic fluid, dead truck batteries and stubborn auger motors on my farm 20+ years ago. Motors on the auger were of particular hatred. I got sick of these little gems not wanting to start so I would heat up a teapot full of water until it "whistled" at me. I would pour the water on the intake manifold and carburetor of the motor. It sure made a difference when the temps were below frickin' cold. I liked to haul in the wintertime because nobody was foolish enough to brave the Arctic conditions here in Dawson County, Montana. With only single-axle trucks and barely 400 bushel boxes, spending any time in line was particularly aggravating. Cold-weather hauling worked for me...I had the elevator to myself!! :-) Thanks for sharing your world with us Tony...take care.

    I have Webasto systems in all my diesels including trucks and cars. I couldn't think of plunging them in all night. The Webasto is programed to turn on 1 hour before I start the motor. This heats the water and circulates it in the motor and heater plus turns on the fan. I love your farm!

    Man that series 60 sounds gooooood! so From the wheel spin I'm guessing your rigs don't have full lockers? also what is the reasoning behind the axle spacing on your trailers? I'm from up in Alberta & we either run tandems or tri's if its a single trailer but the bogies are all spaced evenly

    • @FastAgMontana
      @FastAgMontana  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dave J.A Just single locking diffs. The spacing is basically to save on tire wear empty, they don’t scuff bad when you turn. The longer spread gives us more capacity. They measure ours in overall lengths in the axel groups it doesn’t matter how they are spaced in that group. And the they turn a bit better empty when they are pushed forward with the rear axel up.

    Just stumbled upon your videos. You have earned another subscriber! We're planning on moving to MT in a couple of years from Florida. Moving to the NW part of the state. Flathead County, likely. Any tips for moving to that area from here?

    Shop tip if you can't find the ether can you might try WD-40 works really really well and is not as dry as ether so the lubricant it's easier on the cylinders and those ice-cold piston rings

      Rodney Morgan It varies on a day to day basis. The locomotives that they have in service range anywhere from brand new to 20 years old. The older ones tend to have bad seals around the windows and doors so they can get a little drafty. Some engines stay warm (almost too warm sometimes) and others you have to put every article of clothing on from your bag haha.

    You can get concrete blankets for about 110 dollars they are 12 x24 feet. Cover small engine with them, will keep stuff 30 degrees warmer. We bought one of these big diesel fired heaters puts out a million BTUs turns winter into spring. I got mine in Billings for 9000 with 1500 hrs.

      @FastAgMontana  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank goodness it isn’t that nasty all winter. Those blankets would work good!

      Jim Thomas we don’t use it much actually. If things are plugged in and have good batteries they normally will start.

      Tim Woodring ya we have lots of room for the snow. We will just stack it taller if needed.

    Save those batteries !!! Crack the battery with a scew driver tip it over and let the acid drain out on the garage floor ! Stuff makes perfect floor cleaner !!
    Also I loved my multi axle when empty in the snow with no load after sitting all night sometimes it would be to slippery to move. When you drop the back lift and put 40 lbs in it, It would simulate weight on the drives so you could get rolling.

    • @FastAgMontana
      @FastAgMontana  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That rear axle does transfer some weight up front for sure!

    -60°F in Alberta hauling oilfield fluid two weeks ago. Worked a week straight of it. Truck ran for a week without a burn. Thankfully I never d-rated or froze up. Oil gets so thick and gummy you can't turn valves or spin pumps. Thankfully my heat-trace never failed me. Working in that cold of weather really sucks. Cool video thanks for sharing! I wish I had some time to make videos like this.

      That’s crazy cold. I have only had to be out in -40. -60 sound miserable.

    45 below windchill is bad, 45 below air temp is worse (for starting any engine). 45 below air temp with a north wind is nearly unbearable (for man, beast, and engines).

    • @FastAgMontana
      @FastAgMontana  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ronald Marsh you are right. We had -40 air temp last winter. Not fun.
