    Even though the second movie is definitely the best of the franchise with the best villain, Tai Lung is my favourite character of the trilogy. There is not a single weaker scene with Tai Lung. Ian Mcshane's delivery is *chef's kiss*. His relationship with Shifu is so well written and the lines: "What I ever did, I did to make you proud! Tell me how proud you are Shifu. Tell me. Tell me!" gives me shivers every single time.

    That look in Tai Lungs eyes when Shifu apologized before he went back to raging on Shifu. Like once he apologized Tai Lung thought for a second "Maybe this isn't worth it" at least that's the symbolism I got.

      It was a point to be made. The scroll and attaining power was his biggest ambition. The only thing that rivaled his ambition was his yearning for approval. Tai Lung valued his self worth in power through the scroll and Shifu's words. But the power from Shifu's words were too outweighed by then and his obsession with the scroll just won over.

      Tai lung was right there, about to get the scroll, the apology is appreciated but it came too late
      I wouldn't say the power outweighed it because, during the fight, what does he rant about, how powerful he is, or how he wanted approval from shifu?
      It's just that it came too late

    Dreamworks didn't skimp on the casting for this trilogy, and the fact that all three films are consistently excellent (though personally I hold that two is the best one.) speaks to how much love for the genre went into them across the board.

  • @kelaarin
    @kelaarin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The dragon scroll being a reflective surface wasn’t an accident. You see yourself, and your own worth.
    Po looked at the scroll and saw “it’s blank” (ie a blank slate, ready to be taught).
    Tai Lung looked at the scroll and saw “nothing”.

  • @Purechaos61
    @Purechaos61 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Tai Lung is truly one of the best written Dreamworks villains out there.
    As the movie explains, Shifu trained Tai Lung with the hopes that he would become the Dragon Warrior. His name “Tai Lung” actually translates to “Great Dragon” in English. Tai Lung was a gifted student, and both he and Shifu firmly believed that he was the Dragon Warrior. But when Oogway denied him the title, Shifu, while upset, didn’t argue against it. And this was what drove Tai Lung to villainy.
    Becoming the Dragon Warrior meant everything to Tai Lung. It was his one and only goal in life. But he only ever wanted it because Shifu wanted it for him. Because Shifu taught him, raised him, and trained him, Tai Lung wanted to do whatever he could to make Shifu proud.
    And so when Tai Lung was denied the title of Dragon Warrior, the one thing both he and Shifu had been spending his entire life working towards, he looked to Shifu for support. He wanted Shifu, his master and his father, to say something. To argue against Oogway, or at the very least comfort him in some way. But Shifu said and did nothing. He only turned away in disappointment. This sent Tai Lung into a rage, but it also only deepened Tai Lung’s lust for the Dragon Scroll.
    Tai Lung doubled down on becoming the Dragon Warrior. It was all he had. It was the one and only thing Shifu had ever wanted for him. And because of this, Tai Lung truly believed he was destined to become the Dragon Warrior. And he would do whatever it took to get there.

    This movie has a lot of great moments and messages, the Present line, Believing something is special, but my favorite has to be the I'm not Hungry line. It may sound like a throw away line but there's a bit of context behind it, for one he eats when he's stressed but it's more than that, the start of the scene they say "when you are trained, you may eat" the dumpling was a test of what he has learned, so when he tossed it back saying he wasn't hungry shows that he still wants to learn amd grow "when the student is ready, the teacher appears." And if you close your self off in one mindset you'll never truly grow and learn from other sources and others, whether in Kung Fu, Cooking, or any other examples in life

    Tai Lung is easily my fav villain of the KFP trilogy.
    He's a prime example of "don't give others certain expectations to measure up to", something Tai Lung did when Shifu put it in his head that he would be the Dragon Warrior.
    When Tai Lung found out he wasn't, he was enraged and attacked his own teacher and foster father. All he did had been done to make Shifu proud.

    I'm told that the Furious Five are representatives of the five styles of Kung Fu. Po must learn a different style, the style of the Panda, which relies heavily on his ability to bounce. Just as Master Shifu, and later Po himself, can use Po's continual hunger to empower him, so Po must learn to take advantage of the very qualities that once made him hate himself.
    I'm glad you're watching the whole trilogy; Po is on a hero's journey and learning to accept himself is just the first step on that journey.

    I really do love this movie and the whole... through-line of self-mastery and self-actualization. It is something that I've strived for for a long time now. And yes, that whole sense of the weight of expectations makes it even more difficult, but once you learn how to achieve it, there's very little in the world that can stop you.
    Fun details, though. One, Sifu (which means "master" represents the Chinese philosophy of Confucianism, while Oogway represents Daoism. It would be worth looking into the way those philosophies play out in the two characters. It's really worth the time. But, on top of that, in the fight on the bridge with Tai-Lung (which means "great dragon"), each of the members of the five uses Sifu's advice to them after they try to ambush him. They included a lot of great details with these movies, and I can't wait for you to continue with the journey.

    Ian McShane is Al Swearengen from "Deadwood". So I can't help but imagining him growling: "How is it, in the very ancestral homeland of Celestials, I still find myself bedeviled by hoopleheads?"
    This movie's got its charms but it frustrates me. To its credit, it encourages people to not give up. But my gripes are:
    1) It also encourages people to believe in the "the ONLY thing I need is self-confidence" myth. Sorry, but very few of us are The Chosen One, and it's healthy to realize that, in all humility, you probably won't be the hero who falls ass-backwards into greatness. You are no doubt something worthwhile, if you apply yourself (and probably for a long time); but none of us could be absolutely anything we wanted to be.
    2) Oh boy, the old trope of "fat person is motivated by food and can perform miracles if you tempt them with food". Like that wasn't played out 30 years ago.

      Self-confidence is vital, of course; but this is also America, where you _can_ become whatever you want to be. There was a guy that became a multimillionaire by selling _pet rocks,_ for Pete's sake.
      The "schtick" of food motivation is so prevalent because it's largely true.
      Nor was it "miraculous;" Po was already an expert in Kung Fu simply through his fanaticism. He only needed focus and motivation to learn and develop the muscle memory required to actually _perform_ Kung Fu.
      In fact, what he was really lacking was the self-confidence to apply everything he knew about Kung Fu.

    Gotta be completely honest, I'm really disappointed by how much you cut from the Shifu vs Tai Lung fight. There seriously one of the most impactful parts of the whole movie. ESPECIALLY the ending of it, with the "Tell me how *_PROUD_* you are, Shifu!"
    Actually, thinking about it, you guys really snubbed a lot of Tai Lung's already limited screentime. He's not in the movie very much, but when he *_IS_* it's powerful.
    I really hope you guys don't do the same for She'eng in the next movie. The villains in Kung-fu Panda are seriously some of the best parts of the series.

    Sad detail is how Tai Lung could've been chosen if not for Shifu. The final fight parallels with Po's fight with Shifu for the dumpling: Tai Lung successfully taken the scroll from Po like how Po successfully taken the dumpling from Shifu

      No, Tai Lung's aggressive nature was a terrible fit for the role of a protector.
      Besides, he likely would have found the true nature of the scroll to be offensive had he been given it. He would've felt cheated.

    When you really think about what Tai Lung went through you can really understand him. He was trained since a child that he WAS the "Dragon Warrior." He probably went through even more stringent training due to it and all his life was leading up to that moment of finally fulfilling his destiny....only to be just told no. No reason, no discussion just no. Then when he went for it himself he got sent to prison where he was quite literally bound and chained to the point he couldn't move and the only thing he could see was concrete walls. What do you think he was doing all that time? He was just getting angrier and angrier. Honestly Shifu and Uugway were the real villains since they didn't have the decency to Tai Lung down and tell him WHY he wasn't the dragon warrior.

    • @onemuststand7353
      @onemuststand7353 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      You skipped a rather important part in Tai Lung laying waste to the valley, most likely beating on innocents, essentially throwing a violent tantrum. The 5 were also bigged up on being possibly the dragon warrior as well and not only were they told "no". They were shown that a very incompetent looking buffoon was to be what they were trying to achieve. Tai Lung's rage is understandable but it was NOT excusable and hardly makes Oogway anywhere near a villain. Shifu SOMEwhat, sure since he didn't teach Tai Lung the temperance and patience of a martial artist. But the fact that being told "no" without an explanation made him throw a massive tantrum that hurt others showed that Oogway was right in seeing "darkness" in his heart. Tai Lung proved to everyone that he wasn't worthy because he thought the scroll and power was what would make him what he's supposed to be.

    • @VenomKpp
      @VenomKpp 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@onemuststand7353 The difference between Tai Lung and the 5 is that Tai Lung was taught EVERYTHING and was expected to be perfect. It's why the 5 were brought into existence after him. Having one person (Tai) know everything was dangerous so they split the teachings into 5 so there was always 'balance.' An you're justify Oogway being the 'right,' person by throwing a human being into a dungeon without being able to move with no explanation on why he wasn't chosen as well as his father figure not even going to bat for him as the moral highground?
      An even then the 'dragon warrior,' was nothing more than "believe in yourself,' which Tai Lung already demonstrated by going through the training and completing it. Without plot armor there is nothing Po could do to take out Tai Lung.

    • @onemuststand7353
      @onemuststand7353 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@VenomKpp You're quite literally still leaving out that Tai Lung laid waste to the valley. That's the whole reason why he was even imprisoned. As impulsive and unreasonable as he was, he probably didn't even wait for an explanation and went giant violent baby on everyone because he never had the ability to seek anything but strength and validation.
      And no, he absolutely did not "believe in himself". The fact that he kept trying to take the scroll to validate himself. Then when he found out that all he needed to do was believe in himself, he decided to attempt to beat Po in order to prove that Tai Lung himself is more deserving of the title. Which is hugely ironic because if Tai Lung had accepted that he was all he needed, as in not having to prove himself to anyone, then he really might've attained balance and become as much a dragon warrior as Po did. Except he didn't. Tai Lung never believed that he was enough.

      @@VenomKpp
      Shifu was only training Tigress. Monkey, Crane, Viper, and Mantis became students by accident, and only at Oogway's suggestion.
      Oogway realized that Tai Lung was too aggressive, partly because Shifu didn't moderate it through his training, and mostly because it was his nature. This, he was unfit for the role of Dragon Warrior.
      Then Tai Lung _proved_ he wasn't qualified for the role of a protector by laying waste to the valley.
      And even if Tai Lung _was_ given the scroll, he would've felt cheated by the true nature of it. He really saw it as a path to more power - he would not be satisfied by learning that being himself was enough.
